They should really broadcast Evo on G4tv

You could just briefly explain the mechanics before a match and give a brief overview on the fundamentals of the game before matches for that game start.

That’s true, running commentary would definitely help a lot, crowd noise too. Explanation beforehand is useless, everybody who tunes in at the beginning to watch this is someone who plans to watch it anyway. It has to interest people who find it while channel surfing.

Viper looked like she was mashing those buttons a little too much at the beginning.

You don’t need to explain beforehand; people understand the basic mechanics of a fighting game, they just won’t understand why Chun keeps spamming c.mk.

A couple of months ago there was this big SC invitational some dude linked to in GD, and while I had my doubts at first, the commentator for that did an excellent job getting me into the game even though I don’t know shit about high level Starcraft play. You need someone who explains why things are done at a high level (not overbear the audience with detail), not just repeat what is being done, and keep a lighthearted, energetic tone.

…as long as they don’t get crazy with it; but G4 has a way of letting down the gaming community, you know?

We really need to pay some girls $50 to stand around in bikini’s or whatever. Doesnt matter what you say, all events are more well known and better when fine girls are there standing around in bikini’s. Hot outfits, whatever. We have yaris’s and the prizes are in the thousands, lets spare a couple hundred and hire models or somthing.

And yes definetly get people to explain strategies. Character matchups, Chun/Chun matches with half screen wiffs for 20 sec cause of super chain, genei-hin is godly etc

It’s buried in a pit of old tapes man. (aka back when I didn’t label shit properly)I’d point you to a promo edit I sent G4 but the server I threw it on crashed and burned. I think I
copied the canons but eh it was mad long ago.

We have enough decent-looking girls who play the games who would do it for a free trip to Evo.

though i would love to see games aired on tv i think i’ve thought of a good reason why it wouldn’t be possible… what about trademark infringement… wouldn’t evo have to get the rights to televise all the games…??? i don’t know if this is right or wrong…

ESPN broadcasted a bones tournament. JXvEcb2wSq8]I shits you not. Ball juggling? Why the fuck not? Cup stacking? (via someone’s weird hotel room footage).

Jazz up Sirlin’s first , cut it down to 3-5 minutes and the viewer has all the information they need to basically follow along.

i was gonna post the same thing… sirlin pretty much covered the basic ideas of SF and basically any 2d fighting game without a parry…

i think someone else should do the commentary tho… him and Seth bore the fuck out of me… too dry… someone like rockefeller would be dope as long as he doesnt talk shit to the players while the match is going on

I want rockefeller to talk shit to the players while the match is going on.

dave thats cause you’re a asshole and enjoy others suffering

I don’t agree at all. I think spending 5 minutes before the action starts to explain things already will start to lose people, and rockefeller type commentary would alienate people who aren’t in the community. How fighting games work is pretty self explanatory, and explaining why jumping in is a bad idea, or the importance of footsies can all be explained in real time. Most people under 30 have player SF at some point, and I don’t think we stand a chance at getting spectators older than that.

Most ESPN coverage spends around 3 minutes towards the beginning of the hour explaining how some of the non-mainstream events work. I’m not sure if they do it for WSOP anymore, but most texas hold em shows spend that amount of time explaining the basics of poker…and most people know how to play that game by now.

This isn’t a polar, black and white issue to debate about. Announcers can also explain what is going on during the match. The point is that it can be done. It should be done. Why does cup stacking have more coverage?

Not true.

Comedy Central didn’t cancel it 5 years ago enough for it to be shown on G4.

Now that I think about it, yeah, they do do that. I stand corrected. The only problem then is that Evo runs a diverse group of games. An explanation of how GG plays could take a while. Maybe I’m wrong in this assumption, but it just seems that most people who might potentially watch Evo on TV understand the basic idea of fighting games.

Because cup stacking is easy to explain and there is nothing complicated for the viewer to discern while watching it. Check out that video. It looks cool, it has children having fun and competing, and there is an international community for it.

Everyone keeps using the example: Well, if “X” is on ESPN, then why not Evo. It is not that simple at all. Think about it from the layman’s perspective. Would they really want to watch some 20 year old kids play a videogame with characters they barely know with dated graphics. Or you can watch kids stack plastic cups or watch kids spell hard ass words lol.

If there was a bigger scene for SF perhaps it would be on television but the majority of people dont give a fuck about street fighter and videogames in general. Most people that our in our age bracket don’t even give a fuck about streetfighter. You have a better chance seeing a Wii bowling tournament on tv than street fighter.

Blah they cut out like my whole interview… Oh well only thing from that I have to say is I never realized how sick I looked even back then.

And with that im off…

I’m afraid the “if ‘x’ is on ESPN” example still works. Everything you said about Street Fighter can be applied to the other examples I mentioned, especially cup stacking (except for graphics).

Maybe your generation wouldn’t like seeing Super Turbo on ESPN (in which case…worst generation ever). I know my generation would definitely wind up talking about it at the water cooler the next day.

In other developments…I think we know who is into cup stacking on SRK.
