That’s a possibility, yes. But again, Univision spent all that money on the Gawker Network, which is really just a collection of sites. It doesn’t make sense to, after that, shut down most of the sites. If they were going to do that, what was even the point of buying the network? This is just a case of “Under New Management”. Time will tell what happens to the other sites, but they’ll live on.

Deadspin was the breaking news source of a major NFL player’s domestic violence, with police photos of the beat up spouse. Sports writers were telling people to go read the story there, the rest of them too afraid to go after the big bad NFL and its beer money who directly support them and ever say anything bad about the hand that feeds them, to remain on the back of the money train and get a very small part of it.

Was Gawker an oftentimes clickbaity site that occasionally ruined a random person’s life for absolutely no reason? You betcha. Were they also one of the few media companies that would flip all their corporate masters the bird and run controversial/unflattering stories, damn the consequences? Yes.
Great example is this UFC story where the company covered up a failed drug test to make sure a fight happened:
The writer actually previously worked for Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Sherdog (a big MMA site) and a few other major outlets. None of them would run it except Deadspin.
I mean, just ask yourselves where you’re more likely to see a story about a drug company doing some shady shit. CNN or Gawker? The answer is the one that doesn’t play commercials for new heart medications every block.

They were tanked because they broke the rules of decency and journalistic etiquette. They were bullying people and ruining lives as well as engaging in lots of unethical practices. It was a humanitarian decision to take them down. They were targeted BECAUSE they were doing shitty things, not because a billionaire randomly wanted to shut them down for no reason.
This should serve as a lesson to them. As long as you are good people and follow the rules, you won’t get your asses kicked. This isn’t rocket science.
On the other hand, Hogan ruined the marriage of his former “best friend”.
