someone mentioned cr. str stuffs everything blanka can do on the ground, and then if he jumps in just DP from the crouch. I tried this strat against a few blankas, and it works like a dream.
So does crouching strong no longer stop both Blanka’s ball and the slide in this? That’s what I used to do in regular ST to get him to do something else.
i did to i got balled to death. but it did beat out his normals.
i don’t know why more people don’t use ryu as a rushing character. he’s got a lot in his arsenel to get in there and deal the damage.
his f+mp overhead punch makes up some tremendous mindgames. mix it up with crouching HK after knockdowns and it becomes so deadly, imo.
once you have those two things going, there’s also just baiting the opponent on wakeup or going up and throwing.
no need to be the calm, calculating ryu all the time. just get in there and tear shit up!
I use that overhead every chance i get
ryu’s overhead is probably around 8-12 frames which is right around the average human reaction time. Add to the fact that a pro has been watching that setup for years and will more than likely tear it up on reaction. Thats how I feel about it @ least. To make it really work, you have to be able to use it in 4 options. High, low hit with c.rh, and being able to do fwd+mp 2nd hit and making it wiff is the crucial key though. The 2nd hit can still be comboed into and if you can use that timing ALLLL the time, making the 2nd hit wiff will improve your chances of it being effective since they have a very small window to judge hit\wiff.
personally, I don’t really use the overhead all that much but in some matchups its pretty useful. I wouldn’t try it vs hawk\gief\honda seeing how they can do safe reversal vs it on wake up in command grab. Those characters are better off being poked with FB’s and DP’s. And if ryu can dominate a fight by throwing FB’s @ the right time, coming close for a mixup is counter productive unless its for a comeback purpose. The overhead is good to know because it can basically save your ass since fwd+mp, c.lk, super is such a great comeback tool.
iirc, xup j.rh, fwd+mp vs a croucher will combo. Decent mixup since you can go low.
jupfwd+rh\mk, fwd+mp is a decent mixup since you’re working off a jump in.
Been using close s.mk, cancel fake FB, overhead. Decent but it can be poked out of.
And there’s always KD, meaty medium on wake up, fwd+mp.
Fwd+mp, cr. mk xx super for me. I rarely use cr. short now that I think about it
any OG’s have tips to fight against claw?
will the new fake wall dive drop make it more aggrivating for ryu?
what normals will stop claw’s footsie? claws c.mp and s.mp both have been dominating me lately. From that max range on that normal, its easy for claw to see a FB and jump. I know this is a bad matchup but what should I be focusing on matchup wise?
what options can I use to stop wall dive and fake wall dive? Will a jump staright up juice kick give me double option? like if he faked it, would I be safe. And if he came @ me, would it stop him a majority of the time?
did his wall dive hit box get tweaked a little? I know it doesn’t KD anymore but I was wondernig if the hit box on it was also tweaked. I did close s.fp with ryu multiple times and it was beating him regarldess of what side he was trying to hit me on.
Hey, guys! I’m, for all intents and purposes, fresh out of the womb when it comes to ST. lol I’ve always been a 3rd Strike head, so this is quite a transition for me. However, I’ve really taken a liking to Ryu, especially with his new “fakie” mix-ups. I think I’m gradually catching on to the general idea behind his gameplay, though it’s hard because I’m having to learn the whole game’s mechanic in the process. Anyway, I’ve been experimenting with a lot of Ryu’s links lately, and I noticed that I can’t land a number of them on Claw. Is there anyone with a smaller hit-box than him, or does he have the smallest?
P.S. – any general pointers for an old, jaded 3S player would be greatly appreciated to help soften the “landing”. :wgrin: Thanks a lot, everyone!
A good place to start is the ST Ryu thread.* There is a bunch of great info there. Matchups, combos, etc. As for links, I posted a bunch of links one can do off close crouching strong, which, aside from meaties, is the one attack that gives you lots of options for links, cancels, trows, etc. Many of them would work since WW, so it can help you if you were around by the beginning of the 90’s. Just note that many are for fun, or if you really wanna go for a possible (often not guaranteed) dizzy, as one if often better off using simple combos like shoryuken or red hadouken cancels to get a fast knockdown and deliver big damage at the same time. One rarely sees pros doing too fancy stuff.
*Other people won’t tell you, but the ST section is the best one among all boards!
I need help vs Cammy. Her hooligan throw owns me. Yes, I can react to it if I know it’s coming, but against good players who know how to mix it up with her, I cannot react fast enough to stuff it.
Any tips?
I think your problem is similar to the one I’m having with Zang. Before, these two characters did not have ways around fireballs, but now it seems like if they’re within half a screen (and neither are cornered), you can’t just throw random fireballs otherwise they’ll hooligan throw/hop backfist/lariet/green hand. If they’re more than half a screen it’s likely they’ll dodge them.
s lp should stop a hooligan throw, right? Is it possible to get her at the distance where hooligan throw is the only realistic option for her? (I’m guessing if she’s at that distance hop backfist still gives you time to block, and jumping will give you time to block/dp) Once you’re at this distance, can you s lp in time when you mash on the button? Or does she get you in recovery?
Note that normally I don’t play ryu, I’m just starting, so sorry if this doesn’t help.
What’s the correct input for the 3 short kicks into the super with classic Ryu? If you don’t mind please write it out as many different ways as it’s possible. Thanks.
I’m having a lot of trouble landing a cross up MK to -> FP. It’s never registers for 3 hits. anyone have any times?
use j.rh to xup. It gives you more frames of hit stun.
why does my overhead, low short, super miss randomly sometimes. I only use 2 setups for this.
KD, very close overhead, low short super.
and xup j.rh, overhead, low short, super.
is there something wrong with my ranges?
The overhead into low short always combo’s but the super itself seems to miss for me.
i haven’t tried doing it before but i would assume that you do two c.shorts, then:
qcf, d+short(c.short), df,f+p
numpad notation: 2LKLK362LK36P
i think it’s both a range and a cancel timing thing.
i do know that whenever my f+hp, cr.mk xx super combo misses, its either because i was at least 1 frame late on the super cancel, or that the opponent is far enough that the super doesn’t hit them right after the superflash
This is what the wiki says about comboing ryu’s super
"Ryu’s [cr.Short->cr.Short xx super] simply won’t combo half the time, even when timed perfectly. "
I guess it’s the same for overgead>low short xx super.
As for cross up RH into f.FP, i think it only works on crouching characters.
There is no way it is possible unless I see someone do it in person. I’m not believing it because my logic behind it is the last part of the combo you have to attempt it so fast that the short won’t come out. And there is no way in hell you’re going to make that a crouching short do to the speed of the inputs. You might hear the whiff of it but I’m not seeing it come out. I’d be more acceptable to neutral short coming out than a crouching otherwise I’d still like to see it done on an actual joystick in person or at least a video of it showing both joystick inputs and game.
2 shorts is a totally different story that is possible.
It’s adding in that 1 short that leads me to believe it not being possible and definately not half the time. LOL
hehe u just answered your own question
I tried mk and hk and it never gives me 3 hits. 1 hit for the xup then 2 hits for the ->FP. I tried hitting high and low in the xup and still the same thing. Also how do you pull off a cr. mp cr mk to super? ive been practicing my ass off and i cant get it for some reason. this is what im doing
cr. mp d,df,f,d,mk,df,f,p
ahh, i’ll give it a try and see
