The Wrestling Thread 2015 - IN THE BOOKS! PLEASE LOCK THREAD MODS!

Triple H didn’t sign all of these guys to keep them locked up in Florida for shit.50 a year. Plus just about everyone in the main roster is pushing 40 (excluding the handful that are already there).

I agree with everything except they stole the show, it was a fantastic match but the ending shot with Sami looking at a smiling Neville as he unwound his tape.
That was the best shot of the night.
As it should be, the ME stole the show and likely the entire year.

MoTY front runner for sure.

HHH wants to make nxt a brand. He is heading it and vince gives him free reign on a side project.

I bet if nxt ran armories/smaller arenas/civic centers across north america they could sell out.

Imagine NXT in hammerstein, ecw arena, maple leaf gardens, great western forum.

If NXT did a 3 hour special from hammerstein using the nxt production crew, imagine the card and matches.

It would sell out without the use of wwe guys. I would probably get some wwe guys in there like Kofi/Woods/Big E vs whomever.

I mean HHH probably mad at how everybody besides Shield, cesaro, and Wyatts that has been brought in as hhh guys have been buried.

I do want HHH to take over the divas like he has the tag division. Too bad about vince splitting up teams. Titus and Darren Young need to team up again. Hell have Young body Heath (no homo) and ptp can make millions of dollars as tag champs.

I think giving the girls 5-9 minute matches on raw/sd every week as a showcase instead of shitty tags involving rosa and eva would be so much better. If they were so intent on divas in tags why not a diva tag title? Have a tag tourney.

Hell you can bring up divas to take part in it. Just an idea.

Yeah that’s not going to happen, they alluded to Titus going to NXT on the post show.

Flash back Friday:

Ring of Honor show; Glory by Honor.

rematch for December of 06 for NOAH
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MlbBwzy67s

Genuine question: who was Bryan’s greatest rival? I always sided with McGuines but I want to hear everybody else’s response.

Also it must be said something else; alot of NOAH’s problems started when they refused to let KENTA (or Morishima) carry the ball when he was mega over and Double K was near the end of the epic title run. Just one of those great blunders in wrestling history. Indeed if you would have told anybody and placed a wager back in 06 that NOAH would be an afterthought and NJPW would crawl out of the abyss of Inokism to become a juggernaut…man you won alot of money.

I was always a New Japan guy and i liked it when Brock came in. new Japan is a lot like wwe. Where they have a solid foundation in Nakamura and tanahashi (their Orton and Cena) along with a hell of a lot of younger talent and guys they have built. That’s what they did. Mutoh was given the belt to solidify tanahashi even though he was main event. They built up younger talent into main stays, but use Nagata, Nakanishi, Kojima, and Tenzan to build up their new guys. Then you have ex-wwe guys and top independent guys signed to big roles.

NOAH was ran like the awa with misawa was verne gagne, and ended up dying in ring. He didn’t really put emphasis on younger people. That’s what baba did. He slowly worked misawa, kAwada, tAue, and kobashi into main events.

All Japan Built themselves a nice niche, then mutoh bankrupted them and left.

NOAH is now trying to get fans by being wwe lite. They have Morishima as a HHH dominant heel (he is part owner). They can’t really afford gaijins. But yeah. Akiyama left noah to save all jApan which has been functioning still within their limits. All japan is now roh, while noah is tna.

I think NOAH should fold and join up with all japan. noah was created because mrs baba wanted to go a new direction with putting Tenryu as head booker. Tenryu made all japan into a wwf like company in terms of heels and faces.

Problem with noah was Misawa main eventing and never using the vets like takayama, kobashi, taue to put over younger talent. Hell kobashi, akiyama, takayama, and taue ended up putting over talents after he died in order to make up for lost time.

Without the old gaurd putting over the new gaurd you leave the new gaurd looking bad.

That’s why hhh put over sheamus, cena, hardy, and orton

That’s why cena put over bryan and punk

That’s why Hogan put over warrior, goldberg, lesnar, undertaker

You use veterans to help make your guys look better.

Shield would not have been as over by constantly beating 3MB

But having top guys lose to them helped solidify their spot

Most people will say KENTA, Nigel or morishima

Basically…

Look back at some of my old posts and in one of them I said that Misawa was Gagne and Kobashi was Bockwinkel.

But you got some of the chronology wrong for AJPW. The reason why people left was because of Ms Baba was, by all accounts, a raging bitch. There is a reason why she was called Dragon Lady. People could deal with her when Giant Baba was alive because she handled the business shit, with he handled the booking and the talent. Indeed everybody loved Giant Baba and he was a father figure to the four main guys and the gajins (like Hansen). Also she didn’t want to change shit.

She wanted AJPW to stay the same and it was Misawa who wanted to go in a different direction, and when he was president and booker of AJPW everybody else agreed (except for Kawada, but he had a love-hate relationship with Misawa that was similar to Hogan and Savage’s) an they hated Ms. Baba too.

It was only after everybody had left when she contacted Tenryu then Mutoh defected to AJPW to run the joint and eventually bought them out. As for bringing back Tenryu, that was a major controversy because one of Mr. Baba’s demands was to never ever ever ever ever bring back Tenryu because of the way he left AJPW back in '90.

NOAH’s biggest mistake was like you said, not pulling the trigger when it was time to and using the old established guys to put people over. As for Misawa main eventing you get conflicting reports and many said that by 2007 as NOAH’s problems really began to take root that was when he was very much trying to get the hell out of the ring and find that successor because the injuries to his back, knees and neck was overwhelming.

By that point his days of being the biggest draw in Japanese wrestling was long over so it makes sense that he wanted to leave, but he still didn’t know who should be the main guys because he didn’t have faith in them.

NJPW was able to right the ship and they are so thankful that Tanahashi caught fire like he did.

I think going foward styles is a new japan guy and they keep drawing big houses, getting tons of buys, and are getting bigger ratings.

So you have Styles/Nakamura/tanahashi/shibata/Okada as the main event.

But everybody has characters, feuds, storylines, and/or good matches

Gado and Jado running new japan as wwf like vince and pat patterson in the eighties.

AJ Styles will only come back for the occasional ROH show, but truth be told, you’re right. He is a made guy in NJPW and is having the best year of his career, and as long as they have the core of the team that is not bad.

Gado and Jado are the two best bookers going right now and that isn’t even in doubt and they are doing a better job than Vince and Patterson because, let’s face facts; the match quality of the WWF in the 80s just can’t compete with the NJPW current product.

The thing is you can’t compare 80s wwf because they did their best work on house shows, ppv, and snme.

Match quality is well and good, but really how new japan shines is in the booking of their characters and the flow of cards. You have a feud, but you need finishes. Jado is the finish guy. But man i have been super into new japan since 99. Real player, 56k, i was watching ajpw and njpw religously back in 99-02. Got back into njpw with Brock. Never stopped.

Part of me feels like given the reigns of wwe HHH could do the same especially with their roster. You can hav writers, but you need one vision.

Nxt has writers, but hhh pretty much has the guys do their own shit.

Also

Puro is easy to follow. New Japan is super accessible with guys like shelton, lance archer, and other gaijin making it seem big time.

I bet mvp wishes he was still there.

Would not mind MLK coming into new japan to wreck shit though. Lashley/Fale seems super intriguing.

That entrance light was one of the few things that was good about the New Generation Era. Unfortunately it also meant a crappy Superstars episode where Austin came down as the ringmaster or Duke the Dumpster Drose.

Yeah, the booking and the card flow helped out tremendously for NJPW shows and that is why their shows are so entertaining. As for WWE, yeah the house shows were generally better from what I was told, but their main event and PPV matches featured great tag matches, but alot of their main event matches were good but not great with the exception of the matches featuring certain guys like Steamboat, Dibiase and Savage.

edit: All this talk about 80s wrestling just brought up something else in my mind. I’ve been kicking around and idea of reviewing WCW’s PPV and Clash’s for 1989 and writing them on a website. I’ve been kicking around the idea for a few months right now. Do you guys think that would be a good idea?

Meh it’s pretty much what all reviewers do

My favorte article was the little things. That pretty much talked about small things guys did in a match to get the match/them more over. Ambrose does so many little things.

Retro Reviews huh.

Sounds cool. I like it when reviews break down the feeling of the times. Like when you read all the vitriol for wcw in 99-01 it is on point.

But saying this match had no action it was because guys were figuring things out on the fly. The Brain Busters worked tags seemlessly with everyone from demolition, powers of pain, rockers, hart foundation, killer bees, road warriors, windham/luger, all without going through the match in the back.

The way it is now guys run through sequences in the back. Mostly for time and to get their shit in.

DBry’s top 10 Rivals:

  1. Nigel
  2. Orton
  3. KENTA
  4. Shield
  5. Morishima
  6. Cesaro
  7. Punk
  1. Aries
  1. Miz
  2. Kane

Orton and Bryan have tremendous chemistry in ring.

lol at the fans booing the cm punk chant.

Thomas Osaki goes on GGPO every now and then

wooooooooow the last 10 min of that match was fucking amazing.

I don’t know about that. Half of their booking decisions are to stroke their own egos. I do agree that NJPW current product is extremely good though. The best wrestling we’ve seen in a while.

NXT Takeover 2 was pretty good. Hideo Itami… ugh.

Every booker is responsible for ego stroking even the greats. But like you said the good far outweighs the bad and I want those shows on a US ppv with JR on announcing .

The guys choose from a list of names, but they get to submit their own names. The lift sawyers and cable jones names still have me perplexed though.

Chris Hero explained that the guys with shit names were normally guys who were yes men who thought saying yes to the first thing all the time was how to do business in wwe. Where inreallity vince prefers guys with backbones
