The World of Street Fighter Alpha 2

I played the game for a bit when it was popular on ggpo and I don’t see how ryu could be #1. I think the biggest difference between ken and ryu is that ryu’s FB knocks down only @ a certain range. Ken has the better footsie spacing, a 2 hit AA to TRY to prevent jump in CC, god like AC+k for hella range on punish, better short short super since it KD’s on 1 meter.

Ryu having a 1 hit AA really hurts him since every character in the game can jump in, wait for the shoryuken from ryu, then activate CC to go right through it. You need a character with a multi hit AA to stop that. Even though 2 hit AA’s can still be CC-ed through, the timing is SO much tighter.

If you’re simply talking zoning, spacing, and footsie, ken pretty much wins in those areas. If there’s a counter argument, I’d love to hear it. Personally, I thought e.ryu when mastered should be better than normal ryu but thats another story.

chun li is number 1. by far.

ken is number 2.

rose is number 3

ryu is tied for 4th with zangief imo

Evil Ryu’s World Warrior DP hurts him a lot.

Dan would pwn all you scrubs.

But seriously, I like how he had some decent stuff in this game and could be usuable with some work. Everyother game he appeared in was just a waste of space.

he was actually better in a1…haha
v dan wasnt bad either though.

Yeah, I didn’t count that one because wasn’t he too good in that one (not sure about this)? Also because A1 is basically the beta of A2 and thus isn’t taken very seriously.

I liked this better than Alpha 3. There, I said it. It had more of that classic Street Fighter feel than the loud and obnoxious sequel, with stages designed especially for each character and remixes of the music from the original game. Best of all, there was no annoying announcer, no screen-cluttering tickertape messages, no two-button throws, and no Cody or Rainbow Mika.

Alpha 3 wasn’t all bad… the console versions had a wicked mission mode and reunited all the characters from Super Street Fighter II. Still, I think the game was an aggravating milestone for Capcom. From 1998 to 2000, they tried to give their fighting games trendy art directions which felt desperate and out of place. You know, rap in Street Fighter III, techno in Vampire Savior, that kind of thing. These series were timeless… they didn’t NEED to pander like this.

wat.

Hes still in the bottom tier cluster fuck of adon, sagat, chun li, and birdie. He most definitely is not too good. But hes way more usable then in other games.

So is there another place to get the B3 videos from the first post? The link no longer works.

I agree, to me Alpha 3 can’t decide if it wants to be a SF game or versus title in some aspects. I also do NOT like how they just sort of left what they built in A2 and basically built an entirely new engine, rather than perfecting the flaws of the last.

Vampire Savior 3 and Alpha 3 OSTs were both composed by the same people (at the very least I know Takayuki Iwai was on them both). VS soundtrack is a lot better than A3 to me though, A3 OST isn’t bad but it is forgettable. VS is not what one would call techno though.

Ah ok, I didn’t play TOO much of A1, certainly not with Dan. What made him better in that game?

Fair enough… so what is it? It doesn’t resemble the soundtrack from NightWarriors, and while it’s a better fit for the game than the tunes in Alpha 3, it’s still not right. It’s too repetitive and too fast-paced. I can’t put my finger on the exact genre, but I know it doesn’t have that classic horror movie vibe that made previous versions of the series so appealing.

so much agreed.
ST & A2 are the core of Street Fighter for me.

SSF4 will join those if they will fix blockstun and the piss easy reversals mainly.

SF4 will never be as good as ST and A2 unless they get rid of 90% of all the juggling combo’s.

A2gold was the first alpha game i got to play and i really grew accustomed to it. When A3 came out it looked beautiful but I have to agree with what alot of people have said it just didn’t have the right feel to it.

I think it works fine for the theme the game has, which is salvation of existence. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to say the game was artsy-fartsy, but the whole Jedah thing, I think, meant the light-hearted Night Warriors BGM style wasn’t going to work. And I thought the soundtrack worked here. I don’t see it as a “concession” to anything.

I’m also gonna have to disagree on SF3, because firstly, the rap only came out in Third Strike, and you have to admit that a large portion of the Street Fighter fanbase at that point was urban.

There really wasn’t even that much hip-hop in 3S, it was mostly house, dnb, and other forms of dance music.

Best version of hurricane kick. And combo to hurricane kick is the second most powerful regular combo in the game. Ambiguous cross up and whats more depending on how you time it the direction switchs for the following ground combo as well. Some decent normals, and better priority compared to other games.

  1. HK Gale Kick lower to the ground and much safer.

  2. s.HP combos to HK Dan Kick. If you do a j.HP before hand the whole combo does like 40% for no meter.

  3. L1 Hissho Buraiken does 25%, combos easily, and is unbeatable anti-air on start up (also juggles on start up).

  4. MAGIC STANDING ROUNDHOUSE. Seriously, his s.HK was a single-hit version of Ryu’s c.s.HK (2 hit axe kick), except that when he brings his foot down it magically gains about 25% more range than it looks and has a gigantic hitbox.

Seriously, if Capcom was ever serious about making Dan viable, they just need to use A1 Dan as a template.

re: Ryu

I seem to remember Viscant mentioning Ryu at his full potential being no.1, but that was years ago. I think it revolves around using Ryu’s HP FB as a poke (faster start up, knocks down at close range), which is how he deals with Chun-li and Rose. I think Ken, CHun and Rose are still better overall though.

He also has a very easy time getting you to the corner, since for some reason his sweep knocks you 2/3rds the screen away, and the aforementioned HK Dan Kicks.

I remember L1 DP super being pretty nasty too.

s.HK does hit twice, but you’ll never really use it at a range that it will.
