The word 'Footsies' has become so abstract and meaningless

Metagame is a term that’s more widely used in the CCG community. It’s where, in your area, a certain deck, or type of deck, is seen as the most dominant one at the time. The ‘metagame’ is where you choose to either play your deck as is, with full knowledge that the popular build could have a 6-4 or 7-3 matchup against it (5-5 after sideboard, preferably), or build a deck that is a powerful counterpick against the popular one, but could have bad matchups against the other decks in the field that do poorly against the popular build.

But yeah, it’s basically just playing a game outside of the game.

Goddammit, I’m such a nerd.

Footsies is throwing out random sweeps right? Cuz I got that shit down.

I hate the term “just frame.”

As far as I understand it, meaty = attack on somebodies wake up; deep = how to do an attack on an opponent’s body. Footsies is the term use for the poke/counterpoke part of the game that relies heavily on properly spaced normals; certain special moves can aid this. Every fighting game has footsies; how well you can take advantage of them is something entirely else.

Metagame- what’s being played in a given place. If you are playing some in a group that has a shitload of ryu players, then you are playing in a high ryu metagame. Using metagame for anything other than saying “people around me are playing ____ or playing like rushdown/turtle/zoning etc” is incorrect. Vortex is just a fancy term for mixup. The last two years have been a frontal assault at SRK culture; damn kids are denser than lead.

“Metagame” literally means “Game within the game (meta- “small”/“beyond”/“after”)”. It’s hardly as arbitrary as "footsies’ or “meaty” or other traditional fighting game terms as it is a term derived from applied sciences.

Metagame - encyclopedia article about Metagame.

I’m a 09’er, but it seems like this is the first kind of competitive…anything that a lot of people have dabbled in. I just lump short-range, mid-range, and long-range footsies into the ‘ground game’ and leave it at that.

Lol.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to expand on this. In regards to working with the metagame, a group of players can always try to ‘hate out’ the dominant archetype that’s in their metagame by running a counterpick, but that is normally something that is only seen in CCGs, since one can learn how to play a deck more-or-less perfectly in about 2-3 days, while learning how to play the, say, Dhalsim vs. Ryu matchup in SSF4 perfectly as Dhalsim will take much, much longer.

Deal with it.

Footsies means controlling space with your pokes

Thats pretty much what I would summarize from Maj’s article

^ Well you did try to turn this into a Vs smash thread for no reason whatsoever.

the problem with metagame is not the word or the meaning, is that it seems that this days people throw it in every damn topic to sound smart, even when the know shit about the game and how its played, like if they try to validate their dumb shit throwing the word

here is an example

Depends on the cardgame and if it has sideboards and a bunch of other stuff as far as that’s concerned. But a lot of the stuff going on SRK is equal to going to Rotten for pictures of cute kitties, joining the Something Awful forums for sympathy or going to stormfront for an insightful opinions on minorities. I could probably do a Master’s thesis in anthropology just on the events of the last two years; its really quite amazing.

They do it all the time. Seriously, can we start getting people banned for doing that stuff?

SRK does not acknowledge Smash…but they never get it…

On Topic: I don’t really understand the thread. OP is saying that footsies is a meaningless term because newer people don’t understand it? I don’t get it.

Smash players have no shame.

You’d think they’d be trying to hide it.

I always thought footsies meant getting in your opponent’s head, to get them to make mistakes.

thats mindgames

No I didn’t - people would like to interpret it that way because they have animosity towards the game, but I’m not. SRK’s perspective on Smash really is the prime example of the false dichotomy created through loyalty to some very primitive norms. One of which happens to be use of terms.

boo hoo, go cry me a river

i think ‘footsies’ is as deserving of a term as ‘rushdown’ or ‘turtling’ are.

also… ssf4 metagame is all about counter-picking.
