So basically, this whole things hinges on a personal bias towards a select martial art when your argument could’ve applied to Juri. Juri isn’t based off any famous TKD female user but gets a pass yet DeeJay doesn’t, there’s big holes in that.
DeeJay accomplishes his role as a laidback musical Jamaican guy who has a simple but effective design and represents kickboxing well enough. DeeJay is no slouch in the Martial Arts department. Not every SF character needs to be based on a competitive martial artists. Steven Seagal never competed in an tournament and is a sherrif now IRL and yet him being referenced with Dan and Robert Garcia as well as the 1000+ Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan ripoffs gets a standing ovation while characters that accurately portray martial arts techniques get slept on.
Its not even that. Harada is out there being influenced by the planet and trying to male some true to life characters for the world in unique ways. People are fine and accepting of him doing that.
But Dee Jay is the OG of that situation. But what gets me is that people here are celebrating all sorts of references and thievery made with the japanese capcom creations, but US does a bit of the same and somehow that makes the character wack.
Its beyond dishonest to downplay what it means to have a legit western character in on a marquee title of a hilariously xenophobic company.
Shaheen is actually the more “boring” one, he’s just more accurate design wise. Rashid has anime written all over him, from over the top acrobatics he performs via his moveset, to having a fucking Djinni butler, to wearing a DBZ scouter
Katarina and Gigas bland asses got nothing on Laura and Abigail, Laura in particular is definitely not be the best character design Capcom could come up with but they still manage to do a much better job at giving flavour and personality to their characters compared to Tekken.
Master Raven and Viper are way too different, they’re not comparable.
All this Dee Jay talk makes me want him back and to get slightly more influence in the story, or at least acknowledge his popularity in universe. We saw ads for Fei Long? I wanna hear about some event happening at one of his concerts or something or heck, have him sponsor stuff. Don’t make him Zack from DOA, but it was fun seeing how he could use his fortune to bankroll random things in the series. Just little things here and there go a long way to building up the universe.
I don’t mind Dee Jay having a cameo now and then for future SF stages like something in pocketfighters.
Probably in bar, disco or his own stage was great too because it’s on a sunset.
But I more THawk than Deejay. For narative role for any arc related to Shadaloo. While Deejay is just a flexible character to any arc or saga regardless secret society or shadaloo. He’ll go on.
