The ULTIMATE, Friendly-Neigborhood, Spider-man Team-building Thread

Here’s the thing:
If you want to run Spidey on second, you must have a VERY STRONG assist for screen control. There are basically two types of strong teams in Marvel; 1 point character and 2 assist characters, or 2 point characters and 1 assist character. Take Combofiend for example: Nova/Spencer/Hawkeye is a 2 point, 1 assist team that utilizes Hawkeye’s Triple Arrow assist to allow Nova and Spencer to fly around every which way they please and lock you down simultaneously. I have done the same thing with Nova/Spidey/Taskmaster, and I LOVE IT. What makes 2 point, 1 assist so dominate is that it allows you to change your point character based on the MU’s at hand. If I am facing a keep away team, I’ll generally run Spidey on point. If I am facing a big, bulky point character like Haggar, I’ll throw Nova on point and play keep away with Javelins and Pulses. (The best part about these two characters is that their DHC’s are completely interchangeable; Crawler Assault can go into any of Nova’s 3, and Nova’s primary 2 can go into Spider-man’s primary two)

Another thing about keeping my Spidey in the second spot is that he is strongest for me during mid-match; by the time the middle of the match has rolled around, I have wasted a bit of their resources, which grants Spidey a far easier time getting in, and I also have meter to spend for some ridiculous stuff.

That’s all I have to write for now. I’m exhausted after playing 63 matches with Xero right after working for 7 hours. Happy New Years, y’all!

Thanks Raoh and Airborne! I’ve gotten a better understanding at what I should be looking for.

Who are spideys best teammates?

The top 3 would be Dormammu, Doom, and Hawkeye from what all of us seem to talk about nowadays. Dormammu is meant for a secondary point character, due to the fact that although Dark Hole can open someone up, lock someone down, or easily extend combos, his assist isn’t *that *great for supreme space control. Also, Dormammu and Spider-man have the infinite loop with Maximum Spider-> Stalking Flare-> raw tag Maximum Spider->Stalking Flare, <repeat>, which allows you to build 3 Liberation charges and safely raw tag Spider-man back in., or throw Dormammu onto the anchor slot with 3 charges at bay.

Doom has two amazing assists for Spidey, both not only being lockdown, opening the opponent up, or space control, but they both are strong combo extenders. Also his DHC’s work perfectly for Spidey, where you can DHC from Maximum Spider->Sphere Flame or possibly Aerial Photon Array->Maximum Spider or even Crawler Assault in the corner.

Hawkeye and his Triple Arrow assist give so much to spidey, it’s ridiculous. It’s not that useful as a combo extender, but it’s ability to open the opponent up and provide lockdown better than most assist due to it’s incredible speed is not something you get out of most space controlling assists. Hawkeye also has insane DHC’s after both Maximum Spider AND Crawler Assault, allowing him to get a Kiss of Fire during the hard knockdown ending from either Hyper combo, and can follow it up with a super jump Spritzer xx Gimlet if performed mid-screen, which both Maximum Spider and Crawler Assault will bring, provided Maximum Spider is done after a Web Throw from the corner.

I’ll start working on summaries soon. My next one will be Nova definitely, because I am finding more bromantic synergy between the two characters. It’s fucking ridiculous at this point. Rick Ryder’s my new Dormammu. ;O

thx for this, the team im thinking about using right now is Spidey, Strange (bolts), and Hawkeye (triple shot)/ strider (vajra). I might change strange with Dorm though.

Hmm, sounds like a very strong team. However, if you decide to keep rolling with Strange, I would recommend running Eye of Agamotto over Bolts because not only does Hawkeye’s Triple Arrow assist already control that spatial region, but Eye will allow you to extend your combos in the same places that Dark Hole will.

Ok thx Im going to try Strange out and see if i like him.

In a Spidey/point/Assist team, what do you feel is the best assist option? I know it really depends on the other point character, and Ultimate kinda watered down the choices since there’s no need for OTG assist and the Lariat/Gustaff brokeness removal, but I still have my doubts between pure lockdown assists (ie. Coldstar, Shopping Cart), AAA (ie. Jam Session, Repulsor Blast) and good old beam assists.

Personally, I’ve been messing with AAA simply because I have major issues with the sword normals gang (just as I did in Vanilla…) and I feel I can only do something with Spidey if I keep people grounded…I really can’t AA with him at all and my air to air game is really bad…can’t capitalize on it. Vajra has me really spoiled. Without these kinds of assists I have no way to deal with superjumping Zero with Lightning/Buster, Weskers with Gunshot, Disruptah/Magnetic BLAST Magnetos, Boot Boot Pan Boot Sentinels, etc.

I’m still rocking Dorm 2nd because I have the most experience with him, but I’m heavily considering going back to Viper…something I did in the begginning of vanilla due to her OTG assist and amazing DHC sinergy and also her untapped potential at the time. Now that I can roll her with Burning Kick just makes things better and I’d probably use Spidey as battery for Viper’s EX shenanigans and hard tag her for better damaging combos. No safe DHC is kinda meh though. I’m also inclined towards Doom second too…so many characters, so few slots…I swear I can’t make my mind up.

cough cough, a post about Hawkeye and Doom is the 5th post in the thread.

Strider [with vajra] is incredible for Spiderman as well. Viper/Strider is Chrisis’ thing and it also sounds good. The more known characters that get a lot from Strider would be Doom, Dante and Wesker, although Viper, Hawkeye, Nova, Felicia, Skrull, and whatever character you can think of that can self otg into a decent combo.

Airborne I just tried out Hawkeye for a bit and feel like I can be ok with Hawkeye’s style of zoning. However, I might lean towards Taskmaster for Horizontal arrows because I like the control of Taskmaster’s diagonal arrows in the air compared to Hawkeye who has none. Do you think that would make too much of a difference from an assist POV since Hawkeye’s Greyhound comes out much faster than Taskmaster’s horizontal arrows?

I was actually using Taskmaster as a substitute for Hawkeye because of similar reasons, and it’s not that bad from the assist POV. However, Taskmaster is no longer as effective as an anchor due to some horrendously bad MU’s like Hawkeye. Taskmaster can’t outzone Hawkeye and he can’t do anything to punish Gimlet from fullscreen due to the fact that his arrow speed isn’t instant. You can still use Taskmaster primarily, but I would either use Hawkeye for certain MU’s or find another anchor to help you deal with those bad MU’s.

So… how does everyone feel about Jam Session as an assist for Spidey? I used to detest Dante, so I never really tried it back in Vanilla, but I’ve been labbing with it out of desperation (for a character to go with Spidey/Doom) and it seems to fix almost everyone of Spidey’s problems- it locks down chicken/push blockers, it punishes characters who jump above Spidey and it allows for an easy safe hit confirm into web throw.

This block string in particular is looking really great to me at the moment:

Air webzip> j.H~Call jam session> c.LK~c.HK

(Where ~ denotes a plink input. Assist call is plinked to as to get the Jam Session as close to the opponent as possible. c.HK is plinked so that if the c.LK whiffs, the c.HK won’t come out)

  • If they avoided the webzip by jumping up, and they try to divekick/air dash down forward to punish you, they get jam sessioned. Can be converted into a combo with web throw.
  • If they push blocked the j.H, they still get locked down by Jam Session. Since the c.LK whiffs, the c.HK doesn’t come out and you have time to get in for a mix up
  • If the whole thing hits, cancel the c.HK into web throw for a 900K+ with 1 DHC combo

And then there’s the fact that Jam Session calls that snag an opponent in the air can be converted into a full combo with M web throw (a lot easier than H web throw).

Seriously, it all looks good enough that I’ve started to pick up Dante after scrupulously avoiding him all the way through vanilla. Doesn’t hurt that Jam Session seems to work well with Doom too.

Yeah, I was considering learning Spidey/Nova/Dante because of how strong Jam Session is for both characters, and I love DMC, but I wasn’t in the mood to learn Dante. I’ll eventually swing on over to learning him, but he’s really not the assist I need atm.

I’ve been interested in Dante recently solely because of Jam Session…I used to hate him in Vanilla as well lol. Like I said, my main problem is keeping people out of the air so Jam Session and Vajra are the options I’m considering right now…Jam Session with the added benefit of being a lockdown assist. Dante is also a pretty good anchor, I believe…he has teleports, ridiculous normals and can setup self mixups with Acid Rain, air play, has ridiculous chip with DT and that air laser thingy etc. His DHC sinergy is not the best, but my mains use for him is the assist.

I’l definetly mess around with those tips you provided…thanks a bunch.

ALSO YOU CAN DO INSTANT OVERHEAD SETUPS with instant jM xx webzip down forward and it is boss

What do you guys think of team consisting of Zero (Ryujin)/ Spidey (web shot) / Spencer (slant grapple)?

Honestly I feel it is kind of weak because there is not a strong assist that helps keeping pressure for Zero and Spidey. Slant grapple is very good for mixups and for combos but that’s it but hell if PR Balrog can be deadly with Spencer, Wolverine, and Wesker, I think you can give it a try

yeah but thats a team that benefits wolverine and spencer with unblockable setups.

You guys think Spidey/Dante/Dr.Doom can work really well, or Spidey needs something else?

I used this team back in vanilla and had a problem with getting in since I used jam session and hidden missiles both of which had no horizontal space control but are very good in extending Spidey’s combos. With the Ultimate’s web zip OTG change, you can now get either plasma beam+jam session or weasel shot+missiles to help Spidey get in without sacrificing too much combo potential. If you’re confident in your rush down though, session and missiles would be best in dishing out good damage giving access to 2 assist combos. In short, they’re still pretty good imo.
