The UCLA thread

Ha! I just finished an hour ago. I actually picked up MvC2 again (nobody was playing GGXX, CvS2, or 3S) and the game is surprisingly fun to me again. Guess I’ll be playing that every now and then (Strider, Doom, Magneto) when the next quarter comes around.

death throes

The UCLA arcade is in its death throes. Some of its “special-purpose cabinet” type games have been sold off (e.g. Star Wars Arcade, House of the Dead) during the break week between Spring and Summer quarters. Seems a few more cabinets have also been sold off.

If it’s any consolation, the fighter games that remain are more visible now (wrt spectators).

In any case, it seems X-Cape is headed the way of UCI’s arcade. Now it’s a question of when.

I hope that doesn’t happen. I’d handcuff myself to a joystick, but that wouldn’t really work well.

All things equal, they did add drummania, tekken 5, and capcom fighting jam this past year. Maybe they’re just trying to cut out the fat with the recent removals.

In other news, jon(sp?) (ggx2 venom player) is a beast at 3s. I bow down to him and his alex.

He’s a genius!

It’s too bad I didn’t get to play you (Chris) too often. I started up 3S when you decided to stop frequenting the arcade. Ah well, as long as you don’t graduate too soon, there’ll be time.

Another thing. Price of UCLA all-day parking permit is going up [again] on 2005 July 1 (two days after this post) by a buck, to $8. No signs about the meter parking, so I’m assuming they’re staying at 25c per 8min with 2hr max. This change will certainly affect arcade showings, but to what extent I don’t know.

It hasn’t even been 2 weeks and I miss X-Cape already…anyway hope you guys are having a chill summer. Looking forward to playing again once school starts but er I really REALLY shouldn’t be at the arcade as often as I was this past year. Basically I failed 3 out of 4 classes last quarter…  Sooooo yeah I need to rush down school first before anything else. However, white Q WILL be back in the fall to bust a Kuroda. ^^v

Mad Tea Party: I got a year left so there’ll be time. If you’re taking summer, I’m usually there around 12-12:50.

Greentuna: In your absence (and jeff’s absence) I will be using joe in cvs2.

Hahaha, as you said before, “Joe is the wave of the future!” Have you seen my roommate (Johann, typically three of Geese/Terry/Eagle/Kim/Rugal in A and sometimes C groove) at all around the arcade this summer? He should be around to play since he stayed for summer school…

Yeah I played Johann a couple of times a few days ago. He’s contiually getting better. And actually Jeff is around too.

Joe is a work in progress. I’m getting locked down bad with him. Need to learn his pokes and counters a lot better.

Bad news guys. Phaethon’s predictions were right. Just heard today from someone that Xcape is going to close down in August. It’s a damn shame.

Oh hell no…

Oh god that’s fucking horrible. I suppose now I won’t have an excuse/means to skip class so often but I think I’m going to go insane without X-Cape. I guess we’ll have to meetup at someone’s apartment or dorm room or something then?

Other Chris: Is there any news as to exactly wtf the space is going to be used for after it closes down? And also, looks like you’ll be handcuffing yourself to a joystick.

Forgive my interjecting, but word in the grapevine is that under the ASUCLA “Master Food Plan”, the space currently occupied by X-Cape is going to be converted to an eating area (either extension of Cooperage or a satellite cafe, dunno), with… um… the vidgames and pool tables kind of… scattered… amongst the eating tables…

Those of you who already realize the consequences to the machines should be bemoaning the fate of the games[’ joysticks and buttons] right now.

Oh, btw, other campuses (CA and elsewhere) have phased out fighter games and other “violent” games (like… Galaga…) due to… how to put this politely… voiced concerns over the violent content of arcade games.

A little known fact is that X-Cape is actually privately owned; a private enterprise leasing ASUCLA real estate. And X-Cape’s management didn’t care that much about the violence sensitivity. After X-Cape goes away, ASUCLA itself will be in charge… and in the name of… sensitivity?.. I don’t think even Pac-Man may survive the handover.

Oh shit, does this mean gamers have to do actual study/work at ucla now? So sad…

Any plans for final tourney?

Let’s all go play tennis with the AWG.

dang, i wont get to play potter now

good luck to y’all then, it was nice meeting some of you or playing some of you in marvel over the years… looks like this is the time to retire finally instead of just “retiring”

I heard that Potter’s going to UCR even though he was accepted to UCLA.

That really is too bad. I had considered transfering back here.

Oh well. Not like I’m that good at games anymore; haven’t played in half a year since my semi-retirement :stuck_out_tongue:

Off topic here, sorry.

Does anybody need a summer job testing games? Activision is hiring alot of testers right about now.

On to the crappy points of the job. The starting pay is 9 bucks an hour, and there is alot of over time.

It’s a chill place though, so it’s cool.

PM if you are interested.

And play me at 3rd strike

LAtes,
Mike
