Melty Blood Actress Again Current Code
I’d also like to know what makes T6:BR so balanced. I’m a Yoshimitsu player and I’ve played the game competitively for some time, but as a Yoshimitsu player, I know that once people are familiar with the character/matchup, it becomes that much more difficult to keep people guessing. Once the tricks and gimmicks are out of the way, you’re reliant on punishment to do damage, and even then, he is lacking when compared to the rest of the cast (I mean a 10 frame punish that leaves him at a disadvantage on hit? Give me a break). The same can be said for characters like Zafina and the bears. The only time I’ve seen those characters even remotely excel was against people who were unfamiliar with the matchup/characters. One could argue that this applies to all characters in T6 BR, but it’s not the case. Anyone who plays these characters seriously will tell you the exact same thing.
At high level, if you know how to punish Zafina and are familiar with her stance transitions, she doesn’t stand a chance. I’m not even exaggerating; the character is on -frames on most, if not all of her moves and is incapable of huge damage unless the opponent is completely clueless. The same applies to Yoshimitsu. His damage is adequate but his punishment is lacking and he is also at a disadvantage on most of his moves. His only redeeming attributes are his 15 frame launcher, his flash (which is really crappy btw but still has it’s uses) and his 16 frame psuedo-safe knee. The bears suck against anyone who knows the matchup. On the flip side, there’s the rest of the cast who - despite an opponent’s knowledge of those characters and the matchups - are still able to excel because they aren’t as gimped as the aforementioned characters. If Yoshimitsu, Zafina and the bears never existed, then yeah, perhaps I could agree that T6:BR is balanced. But with them in the game, IMO, I don’t think so.
On another note, are we basing this top 5 on high-level play, or just general play?
i dont want to take this too far off topic, but does anyone have any suggestions for ways to update this thread while taking into account new games etc?
the only thing i can think of is basically asking the same question once a year and recalculating all the results again, but honestly I’m probably not going to do that, and yet it would be interesting to see the results change over time, both due to opinions changing and to the changing of regular posters in the FGD.
edit and to answer SAPhoenix: this should be based on high level play, but attempts to take general play into consideration should be made
ST is not balanced especially if you consider the bad old characters.
in my opinion:
samurai showdown 2 is one of the most balanced games
Zafina bears and yoshi are viable in high-level play, just look at Hankuma’s Kuma, That japanese Zafina player can’t remember his name but he was godlike with Zafina and with Yoshimitsu you shouldn’t play with frames, you should play random as much as possible,
I have only skimmed this thread a bit but it seems like a lot of people are defining a balanced game as being one in which every character is fully viable.
If a game had 15 perfectly balanced characters and 5 shit tier unplayable characters with 1:9 matchups I would still call it a pretty balanced game
Balance is less important than variety. If some game had a wide range of characters that are equally popular at top (and non top!) level play, then its theoretical balance is irrelevant.
(chances are such a game would have good balance anyways, since the two are intertwined, but who knows, maybe it has some lower tier characters that are ridiculously cool and fun, thus making them just as popular as higher tier characters. Contrast with something like 98UM… even though most characters are supposedly viable, due to the 3v3 format and imbalances, we would see Krauser in nearly every team. So regardless of balance, this lack of variety is a bigger problem.)
Dude. Everyone means KOF02***UM*** certainly not Original 02. Easy mistake to make but yeah, 02UM has great balance. OG is really broken… Fuck Angel… that cunt.
Do you actually play these characters?
I wonder which people prefer? a balance cast or balance system mechanics? personally I’m more for balance system mechanics. I find it easier to manage bad match up if can maintain mindset around the game fundamentals. Its only when glitches or game breaking mechanics that distract me from fundamentals that I become overwhelmed. ( of course this is a short coming on my part)
3S is definitely a case of balanced system mechanics.
Street Fighter 2 HDR is probably the most balanced I’ve ever seen, as a Zangief won EVO (the worst-rated character in the game on the tier chart).
Super Turbo isn’t bad, as I’ve seen a decent variety in that.
And… for my last pick… Super Street Fighter IV. While the game can agitate me at times, I have to confess, it’s pretty balanced.
And VAMPIRE SAVIOR. I’ve seen BB Hood players (lower tier) destroy the world. So with that said, bam.
Your picks are solid but your reasoning is flawed.
Zangief is not the worst character in HDR, most people agree he is mid. He’s considered to be the worst in ST.
In VS, BB is high/upper mid.
No but I play Jack-6. It’s always the player and not the character and calling Zafina the worst character is only when they haven’t put enough time in her.
People automatically think UNDERUSED = Low-Tier
If a tournament has 10 laws, 5 bobs and 5 Lars’ and 3 Zafina’s what’s the chance for Zafina to win the tournament?
People listing 3S are goofy. People not listing SF2HF are young. Well, I hope that’s the excuse.

yeah, i cant believe yall have 3s so high in that list :goofy:
You know what, this may not be popular, but I’m gonna say it:
Power Stone was one of the most balanced fighters I ever played. It was one of those rare fighters that when you win the mental war, you win the game regardless of character choice.
Unfortunately, because of this balance, I believe the game didn’t allow itself to flourish. All it had was its mindgames =(
Then they turned PS2 into Smash Bros and there went the series.
