The Sweet Science: Balrog (Boxer) Q&A Thread

best thing to do is watch top level japanese play… thats where I mostly learn my stuff

idk if folks talk much bout this combo but balrog overhead 2 super is pretty useful…if in a close up situation and someone loves blocking low i find it effective and very cool looking

Top level Japanese play, your kidding right?
If you want to learn, practice. Take your losses and learn from em.
Realizing why your losing and what your losing to is the most important step in making that jump from good to Godlike.
I try not put put things in my block strings that don’t combo. For example your c.lp > c.lp > c.mp > c.rh string, the c.rh does not combo or string in, so don’t use it.
Remember that while your in your block animation, you can perform another action. So if someone is getting hit with your block string they can mash out an upper or focus so when you add a button that does not link… aka your c.rh, the move that they mash out comes out before your 8 frame c.hk.
Perhaps instead of using the c.hk, try to add a light rushing straight followed by a back dash if its blocked, in order to reset or just block afterwords.
Another thing that all Rog players need to be good at is teching throws, practice practice practice.
Im tellin ya that once you get the “feel” of teching a throw it gets really really easy to do. Then you add the OS tech to the mix and things begin to move forward.

We used to see a lot of Javits on here giving out tips, but I imagine that he is living life or just getting ready for EVO. But trust me, he will share advice whenever he has advice to share. He wants nothing more than to see the Rog army grow.

Or you could…actually hit confirm overhead ~ cr.mp xx dash straight xx super instead of throwing it out there to get blocked and punished

the thing is, almost everything boxer is capable of has already been typed out. He’s a very straightforward character. There aren’t any superjump canceling or air reset mixups. It’s just a matter of people actually reading the forum instead of actually making new posts asking old information or creating a new thread.

Use Boxer’s crazy good normals. BnB their ass. Use Option selects and every now and again, mix in the OH and tick throw. People want Balrog to be spelled out for them and it’s already in front of their face if they’d take 20 minutes and browse the forums.

People try to create shenanigans with balrog but it’s not even necessary.

You know the whole, “watch top level Japanese players” thing really got me thinking.
I actually can’t think of any Japanese Balrog players except maieda tyson and even he didn’t make it to top 16 in SBO last year.

So I am trying to figure out who the “top level japanese” rog players are?

EDIT: Sorry my mistake, he did make it to top 8 and got beat by Mago and someone else

Of course watching the top japonese increase your skills (if you train a lot of course).
What does that mean ? You have nothing to learn from japonese ?!
THIS is a whole joke.

You don’t seem to understand how valuable videos of top level play actually is…

this is just personal opinion, but i think north american balrogs are ahead of japanese balrogs

pr rog
west coast rog army
javits
jwong
etc

all solid, solid balrogs, as hes pretty much entirely based on fundamentals and not on execution and gimmicks. it doesnt take a whole lot to see/know what works with rog that you can’t figure out for yourself (spaceing…AAing shit…bullying with jabs)

pamyu and maeda taison are pretty sick. aojiru guile was doing really well a while back but i haven’t seen any of his play lately.

Maeda Taison is better than all of them.

Plus Justin Wong doesn’t even play Rog anymore.

Rog is like a bike. Watch sunfest and such

Also 1st round of sbo, marn shits the bed after he smokes a sagat, really good shit

I think Pamyu and Maeda Taison are better than all the Rogs in the world except Jwong. A good example is the JP nationals where maeda ocved and pamyu beat beating many good players… The fact that they have seen all the gimmicks of top Japanese players and have top notch matchup experience make them the best. They have just as good as fundamentals as any Rog, if you watched their videos. However, their Rog fundamentals aren’t that much more better than Justin’s Rog, so I think Justin could easily be on the same level if he practiced Rog for an hour on combos

Jwong/Maeda/Pamyu
PR Balrog(Has the best execution, but needs more matchup experience to compete with top level players and top JPNese players)
Everyone else

this Boxer dick-riding conversation is retarded.

stop spamming the Q&A thread with idiotic off-topic ramblings.

It’s Negative Edge errors. You’re probably just letting go of the kick after you press forward and before you’re pressing a punch so you get a kick special. Try to tap your buttons quickly instead of pressing them down.

Negative edge is when you get a button activation from the release of the button for anyone not aware.

K so rog hasn’t changed much since vanilla as most agree. Here’s a video of Pamyu OCVing in the Grand Finals to win the last NSB (Nagoya Street Battle Tournament) for vanilla SF4 in Japan.

He beats Kindevu, RF, and Momochi, in that order. Absolute beast.

(Part 1, Pamyu starts at 2:40)

Can we dissect his play? Is it really not worthwhile? This may go off topic from the OP.

But Things I notice are once you’re in the corner against him you generally stay there. He knows safe jump timing down pat. He baits out EVERYTHING from techs to messiahs to especially counter-hit opportunities. He uses standing roundhouse and jab buffered into dash straight very very often. He walks back and punishes with the quick standing, far-reaching jab into rush straight. He’s very patient and willing to take damage to get in almost like zangief. He’s unafraid to EX headbutt on wakeup. The way he confirms jab into cr.rh is: cr.jab, st.jab (another st.jab for spacing if necessary), hit confirm cr. rh. Against Sagat he uses jumpin RH because it trades with tiger uppercut - the hitbox for the hit goes behind the invulnerability fames of the T.U. I think the also keeps him in the corner, which is why he does it even if the damage wasn’t in his favor against the vanilla tiger uppercut.

At 3:00 min in part 2 he baits out a tech in perfect timing to get a counter hit short making the link into jabX2 xx headbutt much easier.

Anyone else wanna chip in what they see?

I have difficulties w/ those players that jump on reaction to almost all of Rog’s specials w/ the exception of the rush upper. I know it catches all who neutral jump in midair. However, they can easily jump away from most of my attacks. It’s kinda pathetic they can easily be avoided by jumping around lol, and I’m not talking like full screen distance or anything… Is there anything else besides turtling?

I need help against lame M.bison and lame Vega.

Any help appreciated.

not much choice against bison, you have to play lame as well. approach slowly while blocking any lk scissors. If the bison backs into the corner, then you can start stirring shit up. Remember than well timed standing fierce can stuff scissors kicks. If you have charge as the bison scissors kicks you, you can try to react with ex headbutt. Other than that, don’t take too many risks, as once bison gets the life lead, he’s can very easily play even lamer than before.

As for Vega, you should not have too much difficulty outpoking him. stay slightly out of range of his jab and u should be able to sweep him out of it. Once you get the knockdown, move in. Vega’s wakeup options aren’t too great. your meaty jabs should be able to beat anything he pulls. backflips are easily punisheable and the flip kick has too much startup to beat your meaty jab. just be careful for tick kara throws and other throw gimmicks.

i played bison against my friends boxer and when i went for a crossup he did a auto correct headbutt. when i watched the replay stayed crouching on his wakeup for a sec then did the headbutt. ive tried this but havent gotten it to work that much. he can do it pretty much 100% of the time. tips?

buffalo headbutt has 8 to 12 frames of startup (depending on punch strength or EX). if you’re jumping in and he AA headbutts you, you are jumping in wayyy too late.

i was thinking that. thanks
