I think every Ryu has went through this, I battled continually with it for the first 4-5 months, try to zone only get blown up by ham shit or go ham like everybody else - do better.

My theory/experience so far is that playing Ryu is a case by case, character by character type style. Some you can zone, some your wasting your time trying to zone. Some you can partially zone…until meter is introduced.

The best I’ve played style wise ( and how I think he’s played) is that you sort of play this weird “pause” type game , with large portions of nothing but waiting on your opponent doing something then reacting to that - not even fireballs because most characters are just trying to either expose your lack of mid ranged buttons or expose your fireball. So you sort of become like this reactionary type zoner instead of a pro active type zoner that’s controlling ( thinking about Nash or Guile).

I’m not sure if I’m getting my point across there but his style is like a mash between turtle and counter attack.

I play Ryu on a occasion when I need a break from Alex. My reactions are trash so I can’t see myself playing Ryu that way. I find it difficult to be very proactive with how short his buttons are. My ranges are always off with him and it fucks me up. I’m seriously lost when it comes to Ryu.
