The more I get to know sf5 the the more things I’m not liking about the game:

My newest gripe is the reason why I don’t like Blazblue:

The characters all seem designed around specific weaknesses. Some not so pronounced as BB but still, balancing via giving every character a shitty trait or 2 seems the norm in this game.

So why don’t l like it?

Because accessing said characters weaknesses allow easy mode access to autopilot gameplay to take advantage of said weakness.

In a nutshell, your character can be abused in non thoughtful ways because of certain weaknesses. It’s the lack of thought that really pisses me off. And it’s the whole wanting a more “all around” character that isn’t ryu, that is also pissing me off. Previously in other streetfighters it doesn’t seem like a full on design choice to make characrers weak in an area, it’s just how their archetypes are, but in sf5 I’m noticing more and more design decisions where a character seems EXCEPTIONALLY weak in certain areas of the game and when the opponent knows that, they can just abuse that one facet of your character and start to turn their brain off.

Annoying.

Nash is imo the best designed character in the game right next to Chun.

Best fireball game in SFV and tools for everything. He’s perfect, so happy with how he turned out.

Also to the guy above I agree. I think I said in the last thread that the way to fight fang is to completely ignore poison because it barely matters at all.

Fang falls apart alot as a character once you realize his poison does no damage and you stop respecting it.

So give everyone an invincible reversal?

Be interesting to have a list of what these supposed glaring weaknesses are per character and how people take advantage of them.

To sort of spin this into a positive, could seeing all these studios/publishers dive hard into fighting games again make them double down on Street Fighter V? Like there might be two angles to this

  1. Pride: “We used to be the best, let’s be the best again. SNK, Namco,etc. are not better than us at fighters and never will be.”

  2. Money: “If Nintendo, Warner Bros, Microsoft, and soon Riot Games see money in the fighting game genre, we should stay in the genre as well.”

Obviously an optimistic way of looking at things, but eh, it might just be how Capcom Japan is thinking.

I mean general population like SF5. If there are other games you like better, then just go play them. Why make comparisons like “X is better than SF” when X is right there. Guy been posting like how many times now about “this is why I don’t like SF5”.

It is what it is, can’t really change the design direction they went with.

Not even sure if people know what they like or not. It’s like if you lose a lot, then you don’t like the game. But when you start winning and having fun, you like the game.

That Nintendo meme about zelda games and fans not knowing what they like come to mind.

He is a rather honest character where you HAVE to be able to play footsies while knowing HOW TO BLOCK. That eliminates most players. Also no reversal, not even super, so you never have to be afraid to pressure him.

When you say things like “supposed” it goes from being interesting to knowing that one is simply entering a shit flinging contest, and seeing as to how I’m not fully invested in every character in the game, I’m not going there.

Without really naming characters though, I’ll simply list some weaknesses:

No 3 frame normal in a game like sf5
No meterless or metered reversal outside of super
Worse than average throw range
Worse or no followups to certain knockdowns… Some characters get pressure off of throws, some don’t. The weird thing is that zoners seem to get pressure off of throws but strikers seem to not, or get very bad pressure.
Bad or weird AA’s
Weird hitconfirms, aka relying on CH like Laura or Alex, or not having decent medium medium confirm, or not having a light to medium confirm, not having a fire and forget CC confirm etc… Basically balance being achieved via type of confirm and there being weaknesses to the type of confirm.
Fucking terrible walkspeed (Nash, bison, sim etc)
Very bad ranged pokes or bad pokes in general for many different reasons including but not limited to lacking range, having a huge hurtbox, not being cancelable.
Bad or no overhead option

And there are many more. You can basically toss all these things in a blender and then make a character based off of some of them, the problem is all these things, in the relative strength that they have in the game, can be abused. Like, an inability to get in weakness in an old game might be a weakness with a rating that feels like 4 or 5 in an old game, but in this game, it feels like a 6 or 7.

Not that that particular weakness feels like that, I’m just talking in general weaknesses seem more pronounced and easier to abuse in this game than ones of old.

A cyborg girl technically speaking. But can Juri kick Chun’s ass without her FSE (i.e. all natural)? Don’t think on it, the answer is no. So Chun-Li is still the reigning strongest woman in the world (and SF5).

At some point tier placing and quality of life has to be two different discussions. Dude can’t use any special moves out of combos, below average frame advantages, no walking, no 3 frame jab, no reversal…I mean the last high level Nash main will 99% have a new character at Evo

I think everyone would have more fun if he could do something besides dash
