They’re going to shut down the servers? Because that’s the only news about SFV I’d consider exciting.
Isn’t that the mod that deleted Laura from the game and proceeded to give the entire roster loads of dumbshit? It would be like taking Menat out of the game and giving the remaining of the cast a bunch of detached hitboxes.
Ok, I see your point.
The model artstyle actually works because it’s not like they can compete in the raw anime look with ArcSys or make a realistic-like style that can compete with Tekken.
Could be more refined, yes, but it’s unique enough.
Kinda disagree on the stages too, some of the stages are really good. Not that it matters because “lol optimization”, so all we really see is The Grid.
But stages like Sun Chase Moon are very unique stages that fit the character representing it.
The fact that it took almost 3 years to sell what capcom projected for the 1st 2 to 3 months while its competition managed to push the same numbers and surpass them on mere months says otherwise.
The inconsistency in models is the biggest problem with how v looks and what stops it from being anywhere near objectively good
Ken in general, ibukis winscreen face, Alex’s fucked up legs and potato hair, the list goes on and you all probably have your own favorite example. I’ll give SFV points for being bright and colorful, and I think capcom still has the touch for character designs (zeku, menat are universally agreed winners and tbh I like fang and Laura too) but they cheaped out too hard on the quality
Man, one of the biggest problems for sfv is its presentation.
You have models breaking and clipping ont he character select screen.
That shit inmediately turns off any newcomer, lol.
Like, look at Sakuram nt only does she have a weird facial expression that makes the 3d model look ugly, but also has her posture be very unnatural and her neck stretches and breaks in a way that is unpleasant to look.
In the FGC, SF is still a brand that has weight to it.
The horrid launch state pretty much doomed the game for casuals, but it’s not like they really stick around anyway.
If anything, the competition stepped up.
SFV’s fumble was good for the community overall, but when 6 is announced, you’ll see that while most of us will have our reservations towards it, it will bring a lot of hype to the FGC.
Edit: Fuuuuck, you didn’t have to remind me of that.
Yeah, you right, the execution killed the concept.
Tbh if visuals was the biggest problem SFV had i would consider myself happy.
It’s not super pretty but not ugly either. Stages are mad ugly imo most of them, the low quality textures and props stick out a lot. There are a few ok looking stages but man do most suck ass.
You know what needs to come back? Games with decent sized rosters instead of these 40 character behemoths.
SFV Alex is something amazing, they had this cool character and somehow they went and beat him in the face with the ugly stick, dressed him like a clown and while at it also made him terrible. It’s like they wanted him to fail.
I like my stages how I like my referees. They’re at their best when I don’t notice their presence. If I do, something went wrong.
Not gonna happen.
DLC prints money and with 5 games’ worth of great characters, you got a lot of fans to please.
SFV actually handled the roster size well. Iirc, it had 16 at launch, so you start small and add characters from there, you don’t really have to learn 40 matchups from the jump.
I think that the usa fgc being so sf centric will be the doom of it.
We already saw it when SFV underperformed, the FGC growth momentum was halted considerably.
And yes, i know many people here will be hyped about SF6 being a thing, and knowing capcom they will start the vicious cycle of dissapointment that the fgc always delves into when a new SF comes out.
Where they moan and complain about the game being asscheecks, but will stick to it because muh SF, all while starting to praise how good the older game was
If the US FGC randomly dies because of one game it never deserved to live in the first place.
Like i said before when this convo started, the large roster size is a non issue.
1st, fgs are not only made for the fgc, they are also made for the casual fans, the players that only gather to play on their couch with their friends.
They of course will like to get their favorite chars in.
2nd, the rosters get this big after quite some time, it something gradual.
3rd, the meta always balance itself with the community gravitating over a subset of the cast, it doesnt matter if the game is balanced or not, the players will always use a small part of the cast when it comes to competitive play.
DLC chars help keep the game fresh and actually help the game being alive for longer.
Actually DLC started as expansion packs in PC and they were awesome. You get basically another game for like half the cost. Then they went and bastardized it on console. The Torna DLC for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 on Switch was how all DLC used to be. It was literally a 30 hour prequel to the main game.
I would say that a lot of games have been handling DLC fine.
Specially on FGs where the cost of having new chars via DLC is cheaper than having to buy a new whole game with each revision.
Now we can get the balance changes for free and buy the chars if we want or not.
Not to mention cases like SFV where the bulk of the DLC is really a bunch of cosmetic stuff for people that value it.
The free bugfixes and balance patches really help, so I don’t see DLC as this demonic evil set to destroy games.
Granblue announcing the second shill pass before the game released was kinda scummy though, especially since the first character on it is apparently one of the main villains.
