Yeah dude I was just about to post this. Even if you don’t play or follow DOA it is very interesting to listen to, and a lot of important things can be learned from this to prevent these types of things from happening again in the future.
I’m not really a huge DOA fan, but this was definitely worth listing to.

All the videos there. I was part of that forum for some time, too bad the top dogs were such crooks. This should be on frontpage so that other communities can see how they can go wrong. A real pity.
Wow, there’s certainly a lot of bad blood there!
My own experience with Dead or Alive is a bit of a mixed bag. When I first got my Dreamcast back in '99, Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive were amongst my first exposure to 3D fighting games. I was an N64 kid during the 5th generation so I missed out on Tekken and Virtua Fighter, so it was quite and overwhelming experience to have such visually impressive 3D fighters like Soul Calibur and DOA available on my new system, when the last fighting game I had played extensively was Killer Instinct on the SNES, so I’d be lying if I said DOA doesn’t hold a bit of nostalgia for me (although that may also have something to do with the fact that I was at the age where I was realizing how much i loved boobs).
The problem DOA is having is actually similar to what Mortal Kombat was having for a long time. Just like how Mortal Kombat was relying too heavily on the novelty of gore for a long time, Dead or Alive was relying on the novelty of “it has hot chicks!” The problem though, is that in this day and age every other fighting game has its own ensemble of well endowed babes, and so Dead or Alive’s use of women as its starring novelty comes across as pretty silly, and by the time the series reached Xbox 360 their desperation to use the girls to sell the game had pretty much maxed out. “Dur hur, it’s M rated because there’s 2 seconds of sideboob in a CG cutscene, don’y you wanna buy it?”
Maybe it’s possible for DOA to make a comeback some day the way MK did, however it will take a bit of soul searching on the franchises’ part. They need to move away from this idea of a perfect world made of smooth plastic, because while it was very nice looking on the Dreamcast it’s quite dated in 2011. Furthermore, they need to do what MK did and evaluate the core complaints that the fighting game community has with the gameplay, chiefly the cheap one-button reversal system. Lastly, they have to grow up and stop the whole “it’s a fighting game, with hot chicks!” nonsense, because that’s every fighting game today, and I’m not 14 anymore. Perhaps if the whole cast didn’t look like they were all made out of plastic, people would actually pay attention to characters other than the cutesy doe-eyed moe girls with bouncy breasts.
If you have a solid fighting game, you will have a solid community. DOA has hardly been trying to keep up with the competition, and so it’s no surprise that the community is in decline.
Well now that team ninja is a little bit different, DOA might be able to move forward, rather than move backwards like they did with DOA4
When I was on DOA central, the main difference i noticed from other communities is that the top players seemed to dislike each other. Normally, the top players from games are, for the most part, friends. In DOA, however, it looked like most of them hated each other, which makes it really hard to bring a community together, imo.
And yeah, a new DOA with a better system would definitely be a good thing, and with SFIV/MvC3/MK9 showing a resurgance of fighting games, it wouldn’t be impossible for DOA to get more mainstream now than it’s ever been before.
I hope so. DOA went into the gutter on Cookie-face’s watch, and from what I can tell he was the one who decided to completely sell out with all the fanservice, like the stupid Volleyball games. Aside from porting Dead or Alive Volleyball 2 to the PSP and a silly easter egg in Ninja Gaiden 2 where you can make a girl’s boobs bounce by shaking the controller, Team Ninja does seem to be heading in a classier direction with DOA as of late. Cutting back on the shameless fanservice doesn’t solve all of the series’ other problems, but it’s at least a step in the right direction.
HeartNana pointed out that a lot of the high-tier DOA players didn’t like each other and there were a lot of egos dividing up the community. Well, I think you can partially trace that back to Tom Itagaki, because he himself has an uncontainably large ego. If you look at other fighting game developers, there’s a sense of mutual respect there for the most part. If you asked Itagaki about the competition however, the first thing he’d always do is start bashing Tekken and declare it to be the worst game series ever. This coming from a guy whose greatest accomplishment in the genre in the last 10 years was getting an M-rating for a fighting game that would have been an easy T if it had exactly 3 seconds less of sideboob in the cutscenes.
wow this guy needs to get a grip and grow up “GO ON FACEBOOK and tell he she’s a BITCH! AND tell her TOM BRADY SENT YOU!!”
Yeah man. You got MK early and practiced up a lot, so that makes you a celebrity superstar with a personal army. You are a big deal.
You should have seen her youtube profile before she deleted everything many people came there and did it.
With DOAD being a 3DS game I highly doubt it.
Hmm, so if we apply this to SF and Tekken, since Ono loves to troll folks and Harada loves clowning around with Ono therefore…
SF players = trolls?
Tekken players = clowns?
Brilliant!
Well, this just gave me something to listen to in the background while I work
Yes sf players are trolls.
Tekken players? Of frigging course they’re clowns. I’d like to see a circus clown hold a juggle longer then any Tekken 6 player. They would fail.
This is a story that ought to be heard for anyone dedicated to any fighting game scene. When the most dedicated members of a scene get mistreated that much it affects the integrity of the scene itself. Over the years I’ve heard about some shady stuff but this probably takes the cake. I thought Perfect Legends was going to talk more about this in the recent podcast but I guess he wasn’t looking to burn bridges. Some bridges aren’t worth using anyway though. If you ever want to get into the ST scene Tom Brady, I’d be glad to welcome you.

Is DOA really relevant anymore? I haven’t seen high level DOA since two in some Japanese arcades and the system hasn’t evolved every much.
I don’t know how this can be labeled “interesting,” granted I could only stand to watch the first video. It’s not out of the ordinary for Tom Brady to throw hissy fits. The highlight of my first tournament was seeing him throw his controller across the room after losing.
that’s part of the point of the story
DOA is gay but Aris is god
Only DOA that matters right now is the 3Ds game, with them 3D jigglies!
