The Stick template/Layout thread

You should be able to use a 1 & 1/8" drillbit as well, that should work perfectly. They’re easy to find and it’s actually the same one you’d use for American (Happ) pushbuttons.

Quoting a post I made for some dudes asking about what is recommended for their stick configuration regarding the new Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

In all honesty I don’t think there’s any best setup for those, so just use whatever you feel most comfortable with.

:shake:
The Vewlix layout is older than dirt. It’s layout has been used on many arcade sticks and Japanese cabs. The only difference is that silly extra button next to the fierce button.

This thread is definitely way too good. It’s got layouts for possibly everything anybody would really want! I wish SHMUPs had something like this. It’s an absolute mystery as to what the official cabinet layouts of DoDonPachi, Ikaruga, Radiant Silvergun, and others were.

It’s not the same as the regular Jap layout, at least according to the Vewlix pic he posted.

On the subject of button compatibility, can screw-in buttons be used on the Sega Astro City, HRAP1, HRAP2/3, and Vewlix layouts or do they only have room for snap-ins only?

^Yes.

You’re right:amazed:
The difference is subtle but there.

Thanks a bunch NotANoob81. This makes it much easier on me to obtain clear buttons since nobody sells clear PS-14-K’s anymore.

It’s still a mystery to me as to why the Vewlix layout has that extra 7th button next to the top row. The only reason I could see it being useful is for button layouts like those found in Hokuto no Ken or JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, but you could easily replicate those using the regular 6 buttons. What game requires 4 buttons in a row or a Soul Calibur layout with an extra button?

The Vewlix layout allows for either the standard 6-button configuration or the 4-button classic SNK layout. Just plug up the bottom row and install the fourth button on the top row. Take a look:
1 2 3 x
4 5 6
-or-
1 2 3 4

It’s basically an alternate version of the 6+1 layout found on some MAME machines that uses the bottom row for SNK games.
For reference, the MAME layout is:
-1 2 3
-4 5 6
7
This layout ignores button 7 when the 6-button layout is used and must be configured to ignore the top row in SNK games, like so:
-2 3 4
1

Actually, the Vewlix layout would probably be best for a MAME machine, as you can just wire it like this:
1 2 3 4
4 5 6
and not have to reconfigure it for SNK games.

Really? I never knew SNK had 4-in-a-row button layouts on their machines. I was always under the impression that they used a Soul Calibur-esque layout (three top, one bottom), like you showed in your MAME layout. Was the 4-in-a-row the Japanese layout? Or perhaps I’m thinking of something completely different?

Actually, on later machines they shifted from a 3-on-top, 1-on-bottom layout to a curved line of four that was more comfortable to those using their index, middle, ring, and pinky fingers. The Vewlix’s top row allows for this layout.
Here’s a picture of it:

Oh, okay, so it was a later revision that got the 4 button layout. Thanks for clarifying that for me, Zonekeeper. That explains the arc of the Wii Neo-Geo stick layout.

sorry to bump this thread, but

guys, currently I’m looking for this template too, anyone have it? I already search but I found HRAP template instead hori FS EX2.

I’ve seen three (official looking) variants on the American Neo Geo arcade layout. As far as I know, the Neo Geo was the original “four button line” layout.

#1, common: no curve

#2, uncommon: slight curve

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/6958/neogeo2cm9.png

#3, rare: harsh curve

http://img401.imageshack.us/img401/3888/neogeo3rm8.png

I would assume that #1 is the most popular because it was the most prolific and thus what more players would have been used to. That, and all the American Neo Geo styled custom sticks I’ve ever seen use #1. To me, it is the traditional/normal/regular/nicest layout for American Neo Geo cabinets.

For people using any 7 or 8 button Japanese arcade layout for “four button line” fighting games… which button setup do you prefer?
(I’m just using the Vewlix pictures because I’d already made them.)

The “top row” configuration?
-A-B-C-D
X-X-X-X

Lots of American players say this is closest you can get to the traditional American Neo Geo layout on a Japanese stick. It’s more straight and more wide. Obviously, you can’t do this on a plain six button control panel.

Or the “arc” configuration?
-B-C-D-X
A-X-X-X

It’s more curved than the traditional American Neo Geo layout. This is what Japanese candy cabs with only six buttons use for basically all “four button line” fighting games.

Note that some seven and eight button candy cabs will opt to use the arc layout instead of the top row layout anyway. I think it depends more on the arcade owners than the games themselves. Who knows what the “official” recommendations are in each case.

  • Given the choice, I think the old-school Neo Geo fighters usually prefer top row.
  • I know VF3 prefers the arc, and I’m pretty sure the Soul Calibur series, BlazBlue, and Tatsunoko vs. Capcom all do too.
  • I’m not sure about Arcana Heart (1) or Melty Blood.

Also note that, aside from the six, seven, and eight button control panels, there ARE actual “four button line” ones available for most Japanese cabs. You just don’t see them very often because they’re just as expensive and much less versatile.

Personally, I think I prefer the arc configuration since/if I’m already playing on a Japanese stick anyway. The American shape is fine on American parts, but trying to emulate the American form on a Japanese stick somehow feels funny to me. Maybe it’s all just in my head though, and I’m not much of a Neo Geo player anyway! :wonder:

EDIT: MarkMan just posted this in the Mad Catz SF4 stick thread. Nice timing!

I use the arc for 1x4 lay out.
When the joy stick came with eight buttons, I like to keep my eight buttons.

On the SNK NeoGeo controller NEO-AEC I put my fingers like this:
A - Thumb
B - Index Finger
C - Middle Finger
D - Ring Finger

So the arc is more natural for me.
Whoever highlighted that picture, should have put two highlights for NeoGeo.

Just wanted to know, is the template for the Soul Calibur 2/Tekken 4 Hori Stick available around here? Tried looking for it, but didn’t found it. Thanks!

Can’t remember if this has already been posted in here… X-Arcade template from Numbski.

And here’s an amazing load of cool shit from another thread:

… yeah!

nice

Street Fighter Anniversary Layout…

Turns out the layout for the Street Fighter Anniversary Stick linked in the first post on this thread isn’t actually an exact representation of the drilled holes on the stick face… more sort of an approximation.

So I scanned in the original art and redid the layout with the drilled holes measured down to the millimeter.

Not sure if anyone cares, but here’s the link:

Good job, BluePointVance!
