To be perfectly honest I was gonna say something a bit more critical because, well, I’m an ass, but Frankie put it very eloquently and inspired me to rethink my position on this.
First off, I’m not gonna sit here and measure cock sizes with anyone in regards to who has done what for who. We’ve all had a hand in building our community. Arthur included. Before saying anything else, first I wanna say thanks. Thanks to Arthur for wiring our setup and providing his personal hardware for our crew. Thanks to our crew for the personal donations and efforts to get the Asus in there. None of us are rich and we’re all hard working people so the contributions are much appreciated. Thanks to Harrison and Jorge for bringing the stream to Starbase and most importantly, thanks to everyone from team Doug, team Nordies, Santa Rosa, Sonoma and of course Marin for putting in your hours upon hours of time to refine your playskill and make our group something we can proudly rep to the rest of the fight community.
In regards to this whole streaming and Twitter stuff, everyone’s goal here is to rep Starbase. For the players, we’re trying to get our peers to give respect and we play our asses off to achieve that. For Bob and Arthur, its a way of promoting their livelyhood. Their business. In essence, we all want the same thing and everyone has busted ass, taken names and dropped names to get ourselves this far.
Harrison and Jorge brought us something that is HUGE to our crew. The stream has enabled us to demonstrate our play to lots of people who aren’t able to regularly attend Starbase. It’s gotten us recognition on a level we really weren’t expecting. To direct anything to them short of the utmost gratitude is unacceptable.
Bottom line, if you want shit done your way, talk to them. Harrison has already expressed that he wants to talk to Bob before doing anything else. Work with the group instead of against it. Be smart about it. Why do work that’s already done? So you can say its yours? I can tell you right now, no one in this group cares about getting credit for shit as much as they do about building the scene and their own skills. No one person is building this scene alone. It’s a marriage of effort from everyone involved.
Los, it’s funny you mention that because Jay was talking to everyone last night and brought up a fun memory. The first time I met you guys, Jay playing Gen/Sagat, randomly getting invited to your place to see if my Seth/Abel could run with you guys. Then like you said look where our North Bay Scene is now.
Jay is right, no one cares about credit. Everyone just wants a place they can play that has a great environment, good times and a competitive level of play. What we all have done is help create that. Everyone pretty much knows my story with both what the Sonoma County Scene used to be like (with Scandia at it’s center) and what the Marin Crew I rolled with before used to be like. I’ve seen groups of people come and go. I’ve seen players get discouraged and never touch fighting games again. I’ve seen friends who have the potential, but are fine with beating their lower than mediocre friends. There was no drive. Scenes can come and go and die out pretty quickly, so it’s up to everyone that puts in any time to play, to teach, to help, to keep things going. We don’t care about getting credit, but don’t walk around like work comes free if you have people to do it for you and don’t walk around like you’ve done EVERYTHING. No one in any crew has done everything for their scene, as it is as Jay said a collective whole of passionate people showing what passion and hard work can bring.
Shit, the players I used to play with in Marin had 30+ people at their get togethers and in one fell swoop 98% of them stopped playing. They stopped showing up to everything. They even bailed out on a Sonoma Vs. Marin Multi-Game Team Tourney we had setup. What kind of passion is that? What kind of friendship is that? Above all else, I’m proud of this new scene because no matter what we are all friends before this whole SF thing.
I told Jay and Hoo this last night, but look how far everyone has come since we first met them. We’ve been all leveling up to the point every get together is a chance to learn something new, to show off or to help each other learn matchups more.
Again, everyone here has done their part, whether it be promoting Starbase, helping get equipment, and even just showing up and representing (which is HUGE, since all of us work like madmen (or have g/f’s), taking time out to hang out with friends and play SF is huge) and I know we will all continue to do so. But again, do not assume that shit comes free and shit comes easy. Don’t assume that because the scene in the North Bay (hella under-represented in the past) is booming, that it will stay that way and you can continue to be lazy about it. This shit could disappear tomorrow so don’t take it for granted.
This involves all of us though, and which characters we are going to main. Of course we are all hyped about the new characters and are drawn to them for our different reasons, but I really think that if we want to grow our game and get to a competitive level, we would be doing ourselves a dis-service to not diversify the lineup of our characters. At the moment we have a pretty solid and diverse group of characters, even though we are lacking a few crucial ones in Sagat and Ryu’s and such (don’t play Sagat).
But i have a feeling that the second that super drops, we will have major issues in this area. I know that Harrison, Los and I all want to main Cody. I know that we have at least three potential Dudley mainers, at least 3 Adon mainers, and so on.
I think that all of this is just pure Hype for the game, and that our real mains will naturally emerge…eventually. That being said, this game relies so much on Match-Up knowledge and now that the cast of characters is getting much bigger, I think we should attempt to all play different characters. At this point I will main whoever I can win with the most and whoever benefits the group in terms of match-up knowledge the most.
Now I don’t want to deter people from playing who they want to or anything, because this in the end is a hobby and it needs to be fun. But I sense that we would be limiting each other from the get go, by not being flexible in who we play. Evo is only a few short months away and Super will be THE game, we all know this. I think that diverse match-up experience is the most valuable tool we could have. The quicker we all delegate the mains, the more time we can truly learn the game and stand a better chance at these tournaments.
My point is: How SICK would it be if we all rolled into EVO with more match-up knowledge (especially with the new characters) than everyone else. We could make a HUGE impression.
Hey im not complaining or bitching here. if it wasnt for demonlos and his constant harassment for me to build joysticks then a cabinet i would have never started on this project. I really appreciated all the money and help i have received from everyone. I do this cause i love working on computers or other electronic components. What i want to do is set up a permanent webcam that will be playing from my cabinet and streaming the video online so everyone can see better who is here and playing SF4 i also want to set it up so i can switch the webcam to streaming the SF4. Lets say im playing a casual match with some new people here you will be able to better see them and maybe set it up so you can live chat to the people playing from a pc ill set up near the cabinet and the ability to switch to the games being played. It would be great if some one could help me set up my PC so i can stream to justin tv on the starbase stream also what the info is for the twitter page for starbase
P.S SAGAT is to powerfull and his combos are actually easy and i thought it would be hard
I agree with most of what you said, Doug. In fact I had already been thinking about bowing out of the Cody main sweepstakes because of your love of Final Fight and the character and your past experience(A3?) with him. And, even though Dudley looks intriguing, I really don’t want to be one of the 50 Nor-Cal Dudleys. Been there done that with Rog.
So now the only problem is who to main? We shall see. I think it will take a couple weeks to sort it all out and see which playstyle fits us all. If no one is thinking about Makoto perhaps I will take a crack at her?
P.S. Anyone down to play a little tonight? I may be going to San Rafael for a show later and will stop by the Base beforehand.
Everyone knows I’m excited about Adon because I mained him in A2 and A3, but in all honestly I might just be sticking to Seth and Abel for Super. At this point I want to continue to refine the two characters I am focusing on now instead of picking up a billion other characters now and being less than mediocre with all of them.
If there is going to be an avalanche in our group with playing the new characters, I’m sure anyone sticking to old mains will be getting a ton of matchup experience against the new cast.
Sure, but also you should play Cody too. It’s all about “feeling” the characters out when we first get it and who we seem to Gel with. You might end up wrecking shop with T.Hawk for all we know. I don’t wanna limit others or myself, I just think an end goal should be that we all have different characters.
and no worries about tonight, im hungover and i should sleep. hahah
Its either “time to oil up” or “time to show you how strong i am!” haha naw but seriously i dont think we’ll know who our mains are until we expeiment with everyone. we’re gonna need a juri and a dudley in our group thats for sure! i agree with los that it shouldnt take more than a couple weeks to decide since time is precious due to evo being so close! and also agree with doug about not having duplicate characters in our crew. another thing me and doug talked about is seeing who plays who good and really voicing our opinions on which character matches who’s style the best. so we can have some kind of democracy over it haha.
art, i think your idea of having a permanant stream/webcam is cool, but definitly way ahead of its time. it seems to me that you would need something like that if there was 100 players coming in to the base to session. at this point our sf4 group always knows who’s gonna be there via this thread and phone calls, and it seems there isnt anything else going on at the base currently to even need something like that. get the different groups for different games in there first, then create the stream. otherwise its gonna advertise a dead arcade to everyone…imo
Funny you mention that because honestly the thought never really crossed my mind. I mean, I did plan on trying her out and fucking around but I’m pretty sold on sticking with Chun and the only new character I’m really really considering is DeeJay.
Oh yea, I think it was Friday where you mentioned you would probably be playing Dee Jay when Super rolls along. I’m sure all of us will try all of the new characters (duh) and quickly we’ll see what sticks.
This shit looks so rad though. It’s like a Mini CC (though a lot of FADC’ing is going on in the vid)
GG’s to Jay, Doug and Hooman tonight. Lots of matchup practice as well as fun matches.
Doug- Love how I got my first win against your Fei with my Abel, but then Training Mode came along
Jay- I feel like my Abel is free against your Chun haha
Hooman- Man, those Honda/Abel matches are fun. Sorry about the Seth shenannigans vs. Rufus
