I think games would last longer if companies just buffed weaker characters to compete with top tiers as opposed to nerfing top tiers AND changing how characters play.

Everyone says(including capcom for sf5) this is what they are gonna do

then usually nerf low tier(vega,alex,fang) to boot.

Waiting for SF4:AE changelogs to come out, and I see they nerfed Blanka almost made me quit the character.

In comparison Xrd is like Christmas when you don’t play top-top tier, your character might get some minor nerfs but your compensation buffs are shiny new stuff.

Nerfing low tier is just indefensible really. Even if the character has statistically done really well at low level or something, isolate what the issue is, nerf it, then give a compensation buff that won’t effect low tier play as much. Not rocket science.

Holy shit it hurt so much when F.A.N.G got nerfed. Literally, no reason to make him slower while giving him such a low damage buff.

On the other hand, I’ve heard nothing but good things about Xrd’s balance.

Xrd balance is secretly meh…but again…that’s a secret.

You really think so? Tournament results are very diverse, though some individual matchups suck hard.

That’s the view I’ve developed from talking to older GG players, looking at reactions to results/changes since Sign, and playing/watch ing…

I mean at the end of the day characters have more than enough options and actually fleshed out gameplans for anyone to be hopeless. But I won’t say there isn’t a clear, massive gap in stength between characters like Sin or Elphelt and characters like Dizzy or Jam or Pot.

I’d agree that there’s a clear gap between the very best and the very worst.

I also don’t know most of the Rev2 change log minus stuff to Raven and Leo.

From my experience most OG GG players aren’t even THAT good at the game outside of Japan, hard to take people’s opinions seriously when they are already getting caught up to by people who have only been playing GG for a year or whatever.

I think Dizzy/Jam’s problems are mostly from being DLC characters, and they are both getting a good amount of buffs in Rev2 and the JP Dizzy players seem to be pretty optimistic about her changes. She’s got 2 pretty big rounds of buffs over the last 5~ months.

Pot is weird in that he’s definitely low tier but I think FAB might be breaking their balancing with him in a way. He has one of the highest winrates at the strongest arcade in the world(has been #1 in arcade ranking multiple times), routinely places at the top in majors, routinely wins local tournaments etc. They might just see it as other people not being optimal with the character.

I think your point about low tier having fleshed out gameplans helps a ton though. A low tier character doesn’t just feel like a high tier character with worse options.

Those were dark days. Dhalsim got raked over the coals in AE. Nothing but nerfs. I wish I stopped playing then and put SF behind me, but nobody plays VF. Every other fighter doesn’t suit me.
