for horror there’s not much out there
texas chainsaw massacre looks really good and is packed full of extras
skip 28 days later, was shot on consumer camera and doesn’t look good at all
anything by mgm (carrie, amityville) is hit or miss on quality, usually have no extras at all
you can get the masters of horror season 1 for cheap usually, each blu ray has 3 episodes
anything by anchor bay is poor quality (romero films, halloween, evil dead)
diary of the dead looks nice
but for horror its mostly just new releases which tend to suck. weinstein is finally getting back into HD so they might start releasing more horror
the fly blu ray dropped the 3 hour documentary that was on the hd dvd
descent is the best looking one IMO esp if you have a TV that does blacks really good
hostel 1 and 2 look really bad
for pick up:
i’d def get blade runner, its cheap. baraka looks amazing. 2001 space odyssey, close encounters. if you didn’t see before the devil knows you’re dead i’d get that its pretty cheap on bluray
its hard cause most of the movies that benefit the most from hd [comic book movies, animated films] suck (except speed racer of course)
def rent planet earth, its amazing.
if you’re interested in buying check the second hand market at amazon, lot of titles drop in price quick there. esp lionsgate i think they have a lot of thieves in the warehouse bc you can pick up their titles new day after release for cheap
sin city looks good on blu but the disk is barebones so i’d wait for a us release. from dusk til dawn and nightmare on elm look bad.
horror hasn’t been too good on blu because the majority of the horror is owned by companies who put out crappy quality catalog titles. universal and lionsgate both suck at it and they own most of it. both companies do a good job on new titles, but their catalog titles are usually poor
rest is owned by anchor bay which cares less
wow yeah blade runner is cheap as hell…
I’m going to try not to double dip for as long as possible
now I just need an hdtv…and an apartment big enough to hold it…
So, is Keanu going to fuck up The Day The Earth Stood Still? If this remake has any positive traits, it’s the new Gort.
ep 17 Californication was hilarious (the one with the cooking show woman).
“I’ve been blackballed!”
“what is that, some kind of interracial teabag?”
“I want vaginatown to be my magnum opus, my there will be blood. I’m really into period porn.”
"…"
“not that kind of period porn.”
Also that scene with the porn director was shot at the new beverly!
went and saw zack and mirri today. totally my kind of humor…enough dick jokes to choke katie morgan…i enjoyed it. the love story was typical kevin smith, the guy is a hopeless romantic wrapped in a filthy magazine…
Dawn of the Dead on Blu Ray. Get that.
i must recommend ‘the fall’ - very beautiful and engaging story with a child actress who isnt terrible
Visually the fall was great but everything else was unimpressive.
Saw we own the night today oh yeah this is a good take on the crime drama genre I like the central focus of character progression taking priority over the larger “war on drugs” theme of the film.
the theme of “We own the night” is known actors who got roped into doing a contractual obligation film with the studios…
Heh, that’s a more fitting review. Though when it opened up with Eva doing her thing and Blondie blaring, I thought it was going to be good. Unfortunately other than that it was super forgettable, in fact, that’s all I really remember about it.
awesome, i made this new friend out here and now i get all these screener copies of movies. she was the assistant b camera on a lot of big movies [departed, clayton, spiderman 3, rev road, doubt, bunch of others]. which really is nothing because you just point the camera where the 2nd assistant director who is nobody tells you to do but she got the hook up with the screeners.
i just got Doubt and its pretty good. it should win movie of the year like TWWB last year, but i bet it won’t. seymour hoffman will win something for it though, he’s amazing as usual
I liked The Fall a lot. To me it was like Pan’s Labyrinth except the crazy shit you see actually has a visual storytelling point. Probably one of the better movies I saw the past year as well.
Edit: The child actress is better than most if not all working today.
It’s not possible for him to fuck it up. If you have seen the old one, you’ll know what I mean.
except the day the earth stood still is a quintecetial part of science fiction film making, it doesn’t need a remake. it’s campiness and cheese is part of it’s appeal…
Did anyone see Gutterballs? Was just looking at something about it online and it looked like it might be fun.
so, i saw some stills form the movie “moon” with sam rockwell, looks interesting. anyone know anything about this project?
an old school in-space science fiction film scored by Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream). premise: “The film tells the story of an Astronaut who has been mining Helium 3 on the moon for the last three years by himself. With only two weeks before he returns home, Sam begins seeing and hearing things.”
could be good…could also be a 2001/solaris ripoff…
