i watched ikiru today. i have not been moved by a movie ike i was by that in a long time. simply beautiful. seven smurai is next on my netflix list. me and my fiance get 5 movies at a time from netflix, usually 2 for her, 2 for me and one we both want to see. i can see one of my two slots being take up by kurasowa for the next month or two. amazing film, and i look forward to seeing his other masterpieces.
honestly, i am starting to respect your opinion much more pg. i think my ego got in the way of me enjoying some amazing pieces of artwork. going through the criterion collection list, i see sooo many films i have never even heard of that i want to see…
fry’s has a criterion section, everytime some employee asks me if i want a fry’s card, it becomes harder and harder to say no…
i know you like th gorefest movies, how are ‘flesh for frankestien’ and ‘blood for dracula’?
i am in awe. i have just witnessed seven samurai for the first time. my only regret is that i sealed the netflix envelope before watching the audio commentary…i am speechless at how amazing this film is. 3 1/2 hours never flew by so quickly. a true piece of cinematic artwork, a masterpiece of film.
i might hold off on that one actually. Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro are all old school criterion dvds that are just ports of the laserdisc, are not anamorphic, and dont have any commentary tracks (the only 3 kurosawa dvds besides bad sleep well to not have commentaries.) I heard a rumor that they would be re-releasing these 3 dvds in better versions at a later time. I would still watch them from netflix though. Ikiru, Red Beard, Lower Depths are all good to go and Rashomon and Stray Dog have commentaries that add probably the most to their respective movies (red beard too, although that is a classic even without knowing all the background)
taichi - criterion is just a dvd distributor that focuses on foreign films, auteur directors and other classics. They put a number on the spine of each of their releases which spurs a collector mentality among dvd buyers. Most of their stuff is known for their superior image transfers and bountiful extras. Their dvd liscenses also go out of print which raises prices considerably for several dvds (Playtime, Salo, Spinal Tap, etc).
hmmm…i’m thinking i may just pick up the seven samurai dvd this weekend then. i really want a copy of it, and i have just enough extra spending money this weekend to pick up one criterion dvd…BUT i may pick up notorious off amazon instead before the price goes too high on it.
have you seen ‘i am curious’? i’m wondering how good that is…
