The SRK Indie Music Thread

Crystal Castles are thieves. Just FYI.

Erothyme. One of my friends and an absolutely amazing producer, he has a unique style which combines IDM with psychedelic inspiration.

im almost bitter that you got to the genre thing before i did. second you on xx as well, great album.

also, lol @ twilight being grounds for indie termination; ill be damned if death cab for cutie lost their “underground” status on the twilight album, considering theyve been all over the radio for a good several years now, and i doubt anyone is going to stop liking veckatimest just because grizzly bear dropped a track in a major motion picture.

i dont really know what albums to reccomend in this thread. ive been listening to alot of lo-fi punkish sort of stuff like japandroids and no age, but the xx and wild beasts have put me back into a more poppy phase.

I’ve been slacking on indie music. Aside from a few new artists this year. I still need to listen to Mozart Amadeus Phoenix. The Kodan Armada and The Birds Are Spies, They Report to the Trees are doing it for me right now.

I still crank old Interpol like it’s that damn thing.

lol @ Death Cab. They’ve been pretty commercial for a while.

And please stop with this 8 bit trash. Popular songs remixed by mario paint have nothing to do with indie music at all.

Interpol is amazing. As well as their chief influences (imo), Joy Division and the Smiths.

I listen to a lot of “stoner rock” and majority of the bands are on indie labels.
Om
Orange Goblin
Acid King
Sleep
Shrine Builder
Lucifer’s Friend
Pentagram
Comets on Fire
Quest For Fire
Bongzilla

To name a few that I like.

i might be the only person i know who isnt big on phoenix.

also, interpol is coming out with a new album soon i think!

personally im excited for vampire weekend’s new LP, and owen pallet’s new LP.

now, my statement previous about how indie is not a genre is not to be misconstrued as “any band on an independent label is indie”. You said it yourself, those bands are stoner metal. They are not ‘indie’. Indie is a style of pop/rock/electronic music. You generally see a mixture of those elements in indie music. Along with musical style that deviates heavily from pop sensibility.

I’m expecting a solid record out of Phoenix, nothing mind blowing.

I actually have not listened to ‘Our Love to Admire’ at all. I only heard The Heinrich Maneuver and Mammoth a couple times. Although the artwork on the LP and the singles was amazing. Got some catching up to do.

I have to disagree, it doesn’t have to be a mixture at all.
“artists are known for placing a premium on maintaining complete control of their music and careers, releasing albums on independent record labels” There’s no genre as you say, though what makes an indie artist differ from mainstream is the simple fact that the artist is in control of their music and not tainted by industry fat heads. The music can be varied in all kinds of genres(including stoner rock).

technically yes, but like I said, stoner rock/metal is a defined genre. It’s a category of sound and style that those bands fit into handily.

indie bands, like radiohead, interpol, sonic youth, etc are all bands commonly used as reference for what indie ‘sounds’ like. A lot of indie bands are categorized with multiple genres/styles, such as alt rock/pop, ambient, lo fi, pop revival, post punk, avant-garde, etc. They don’t neatly fit into one category. The truth is simply that artists just do shit that isn’t confined to a previously defined convention (ideally). Human nature is to make comparisons for the sake of understanding through reference, but the nature of art is that everyone does it their own way. It’s why you hear an artists sound and style change over the course of their career. They make music not from a formula but from their own creativity.

More Joy Division than the Smiths, but then again I’ve only listened to their first album. I saw them live during The Cure’s “Curiosa” tour in '04 and their lead singer sounded just like Ian Curtis to me, it was actually kind of creepy.

Speaking of Joy Division, I watched Control for the first time on Sunday and really enjoyed it. If anyone in here has read Debbie Curtis’ (his widow) Touching from a Distance, then you’ll enjoy that film.

This. I love their debut album and am hoping for more of the same from their upcoming album.

Also, I’m been meaning to get on last.fm for the longest time, maybe I should get around to doing that.

By and far my favorite intro to a song

You might actually be right, I guess because a lot of “underground” music are distributed through indie labels, the name might be vaguely used. Though in “Such Hawks Such Hounds”(heavy/stoner rock doc.), “indie” was used a lot. And further more, when the segment on the term “stoner rock” was shown, in the early days of the genre it had no such classification for it so the albums were in the indie section. That’s really my reason why I at first thought of indie genre is more had to do with independent artists. Though when you mention the bands, I guess you are right.

Find me an indie rocker who sings a song about how they got bills to pay so fuck pleasing tight asses.

Find me that… and I’ll listen, maybe.

Yeah after all the solo projects (Julian Plenty was good, idk about others) they have another album set to come out in 2010 that supposedly sounds like Turn on the Bright Lights.

“Indie rock” refers to a genre or sound of music, it doesn’t mean they have to be literally signed to independent labels or printing albums in their own basements or something.

Example - Arcade Fire, Stars, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade, Frog Eyes, Hot Hot Heat, Metric (do I know any non-Canadian indie rock bands?)…some are pretty huge international bands, lots are signed to major labels, but they are all indie rock.

Death Cab and Modest Mouse are also huge label indie rockers…or at least they were before, I think their recent albums have been more mainstream. Also one has a song in the Twilight soundtrack and one has a song in Guitar Hero, so that is like the ultimate sellout story - they can never be associated with anything indie ever again. Where are the iPod commercials featuring Soul Meets Body!?!

Also, Plans is one of my favourite albums, but Narrow Stairs was bullshit, I hated that pretentious bag of garbage. I will possess your heart, go fuck yourself.

I am definitely going to check out all these bands that have been posted though, good thread!

I’ve been listening to a lot of Sleigh Bells recently. Can’t wait for an album to come out.

Before that I was hooked on Freelance Whales. I could definitely see this on radio, but it’ll probably ever get there.

And the song I’ve been digging is The Knife - Heartbeats. Swedish artists have been killing it the past few years.

define indie for me please? it used to be indie label now it turned into a certain sound even stores have a “indie section” i dunno im confused, its been awhile been listening to death cab little bribes so catchy man hot hot heat will always be on my list i like there makeupthebreakdown more than knock knock and elevators but its been a long time since ive gotten into a music conversation so hopefully this will bring me more in tune with whats up with today

Big fan of , who’s best known as the guitar player for The Raconteurs. I actually haven’t listened to the band, but Benson has been putting out solo albums for like 15 years, and should probably be waaaayy more popular.

I don’t think he’s “indie” enough since he plays with a lot of sounds, but labels are for soup cans anyway.
