Well as far as normals go I don’t know if there’s too many more normals you can use. I know s.LK can probably whiff punish a few things and of course c.MK is there to check his feet, but a lot of Juri’s other buttons are more close range centric and Gief can V Skill abuse of s.HK so you have to be very careful about use of that button. Max range is ideal for s.HK if you’re going to use it. I saw him SPD whiff punish a couple of your sweeps which means it doesn’t really have the best range vs him either.
I think the key is just to keep the V Skill and stores charged up and only go in if you know you have a gameplan that’ll eat through the armor. Then if he gets V Trigger back the hell away because the armor is infinite once he’s in V Trigger.
Also on a general note, I noticed s.LP still AA’s in the beta. Can still AA and dash under shenanigans.
A well spaced st.HK isn’t too bad, yeah. He usually has the ability to lp.SPD after blocking Juri’s st.HK, but he doesn’t get anything after landing it so it isn’t all that bad.
I’m exploring other normals because st.MK is going to get hurt once he has his counter. I know it’s situational and can be baited for a CC punish, but I’d like to have alternatives. Of course, much like lp.SPD, I can just take the hit from the counter and keep going because he doesn’t have anything Oki-related after it.
Yeah it just kinda sucks that you have to jump or EX DP after he blocks a s.HK, but at least the option is there instead of a guaranteed punish at the max range.
In general s.MK won’t do enough damage on its own to deter Gief for a long time. It’s not like Chun’s s.HK where you’re scoring about 100 damage per hit and also auto pilot stops him from jumping in the air
Let me know what other normals you come up with. I’ma start playing Juri in the game more after the next couple weeks to really get a chance to grind the matchups. I still have a lot of brain farts when trying to figure which combo to use in tight situations, but I usually just auto pilot into a store or EX combo and just keep pressuring or controlling neutral.
Yeah, Gief blocking st.HK turns it into a guessing game I’d rather avoid. Jump? Air SPD. Backdash? Sweep? Hold your ground? SPD. If you can avoid relying on it, it’d probably be best. Especially since his new counter will work against it. I try to avoid Juri’s st.HK anyway because it has 14 beautiful frames of start up lol. That and it isn’t like some of the other characters’ standing roundhouse in that she can’t use it to activate V-Trigger and have frame advantage. St.
As far as figuring out combos: If you’re closer to the corner and can combo into a store, don’t always finish the combo with EX Fuha (or lp pinwheel if you just did target combo > store). You can instead just throw out your fireball (that you either just stored or already had) and your opponent will have to hold that shit on both back and normal recovery because it’ll beat their wake up 3F.
Cool I’ll keep that in mind. Pushing people in to the corner is when she gets more of a real pressure game so might as well have the best options there. I like generally using her because she’s one of the characters where you play a lot more of the middle game than just tag buttons into oki play. I needed someone like that now that Chun is too fair and she fits the bill. With much better AA than current Chun.
I think generally once you have a LK fuha and level 2 V Skill charged you’re good to go neutrally against most of the cast with her. I’ve watched Infiltration and he does a lot of throwing out LK fuha to give him space to charge V Skill then store LK again. Randoms online love to jump after you throw a LK fuha and it’s a free anti air most of the time because you recover well before they can actually hit you. I’m trying to remember to end combos sometimes after MK fuha with V Skill charge to get another level 2 also.
I generally love how people clam up once you get level 2 charge. A lot of the mid screen shenanigans they like to do suddenly stop because they know they can be hit and it resets you back to where you wanna be again. It’s definitely key because I notice I get V Trigger so much faster when I put it into play.
Side-note: close to the corner allows the fireball to cover both options. If you’re directly in the corner, the fireball will go by your opponent before their recovery animation finishes unless you delay the fireball.
I don’t like that she’s low tier, but I do like that hardly anyone plays her. I feel like if she got heavily buffed and everyone picked her up, I’d be more pissed than if she just stayed how she is. Anyone else relate or have I lost my mind?
Edit:. That said, her fireball being -2 on block is a joke. And it does suck we never see her in tournaments. And MK store should be an overhead. She should also start fully stored like Ibuki. And… whatever.
Even if she gets buffed to top 3, people still won’t pick her up. She was pretty good in USFIV and didn’t struggle too hard against Elena like other characters did, but people still didn’t play her. Juri, by design, requires work that a lot of players just don’t want to put in.
This is why a lot of characters that are actually solid don’t get played much. You should just like who you like and play who you play instead of worrying about bandwagoning a character because they’re good and other people know.
You won’t play a good character because too many people will play them and you’ll complain about a bad character that nobody plays. Hard to enjoy the game that way.
Just like Ibuki whenever “Juri becomes good” people still won’t play her any ways because she requires too much technicality and optimization. Ibuki is now a high tier character that you can steamroll people with if they don’t have much knowledge against her, but the resource management and setups needed to learn to play her will scare most off. Which is why she may have gotten a small buff in players at best after a major win. I guess she’s the ideal character if you want a strong character that not many people play. Maybe Rashid being the other character like that.
Season 1 Chun was the same. A lot of top/pro players were using her but you barely saw her online because she didn’t have setplay and easy mode combos like the other cast. If you didn’t learn IALL and late cancel SBK you were already going to be freed up by the Ken, Nash and Mika players going HAM. The majority of online Chuns consisted of players that could do the execution and had shitty neutral, or had decent neutral but couldn’t execute for shit.
Just played around 3 hours of SF 4 today with Juri and it felt incredibly satisfying. Was surprised so many people still play it. I just created a ranked lounge and a lot of people joined.
Won some, lost some, overall good fun, it felt like home <3
For some reason even when i win in SF 5 i have a “meh” feeling.Damn it was so good to play Sf 4 Juri after a while !
