I felt she was dead middle tier for most of the last few months. Only recently as people improve with other characters have I started to feel some of her mechanical short comings which make me think she is indeed low tier. But I also do think Low tier just isn’t all that bad in this game. FANG is probably the only character that was nerfed so hard that even top players really couldn’t do much with him. It says a lot that Xian actually dropped him when he was not so great in season 1 even.
I think she will likely be dead middle tier, or just remain as a playable low tier character in season 2.5. Obviously, the lack of buffs to her legitimate problem areas pretty much keep her out of top tier consideration when the next patch hits.
She has plenty of small things I could harp on and wish for changes to, but I think all she really needs is her Vtrigger to not be so paired back. There’s plenty of ways to potentially change it, but as it stands, it is 3 bars, and it doesn’t really give her that sort of yolo comeback factor that other 3 bar Vtriggers give (or some two bar Vtriggers for that matter). And this feeds into her main problem where her ratios on almost all her numbers are really what is wrong with her, and not her overall design in terms of game play. Charges don’t give enough benefit for needing to charge. Vtrigger doesn’t give enough benefit for the meter, etc. I have a feeling that if she under-performs again this year, she will get a decent boost in this area in season 3. So, for people that don’t like where she is at now, that means get yourself a new main and wait and see.
You can be really good even with low tier characters even Fang as long as the character is capable of dealing any damage but the time and effort will be way higher, in my case maining Juri I’ve been able to get to super gold and probably I will get higher in time but Ive got similar results with Karin and Urien with 1/5 of the effort I’ve put on Juri which makes me think that If I had putted that effort in a good character I could I’ve been Ultra Gold or even higher by now.
And that’s probably true. You seem to fully acknowledge that you should be changing mains for now though. So I’m not really directing any of my other statements at you in particular.
I like Juri a lot even with her faults, and have been experimenting with other characters. Even ones that feel obviously stronger to me, I wind up finding that I miss playing Juri because her overall feel works better for me. I was never of fan of her in character design in terms of art back in 4, and she played in a way that I didn’t like at all in 4, even though I think it was a stronger overall design in terms of gameplay.
I felt like in season 1, she was a worse Nash, and yet her movement felt more natural to me. So even when I was trying Nash, I would get better results with Juri despite her more substantial weaknesses.
I think people really underestimate how clicking with the feel of a character helps net better results. I saw Itazan’s interview with BornFree the other day, and I felt like Itazan shared a similar view. He tried a few other characters, but he likes the gamble feel of Gief. Even in Season 1 where he was an obviously weaker character.
Excactly you can have good or even better results with stronger characters but it doesnt feel good. Despite that Im playing a lot of Urien and Karin I still play Juri I just cant let her behind
I think personally, I can’t get better results with someone else because my enjoyment of her play style makes me play better than with stronger characters that don’t feel right. But yeah in general, there are stronger characters than her and most people will be better off switching.
Still. I’ve been climbing in ranked again just by trying harder to play the match ups more than get frustrated by her limitations and its paying off.
I have a pretty good feeling someone is going to win a major with her eventually, some other people end up placing really high with her and then people will start questioning things. It’s easy to call a character bad when you haven’t seen results yet, but it’s not like Alex where the character is kinda cut and dry and had a few placings and it just didn’t work out. Juri is still in the building phase as a character and she hasn’t really been out in the wild like that yet.
If Capcom hasn’t changed anything now (after another semi patch) it’s obvious Capcom is pretty content with the character and is going to fold their arms and force Juri players to work. Infiltration like yourself said he’s also using Juri since he likes the character and she fits his play style. Her style isn’t to press forward as much as some of the other characters and although that is a big part of the meta, she could end up as an anti meta if enough things are put together with her. When she’s all stored and charged up it takes a lot of things away neutrally from a lot of characters and with her very strong AA jump doesn’t even really become an option other than trajectory altering stuff.
The stores could probably use another slight buffing, but I think if Capcom hasn’t budged after so long they feel they are in a good spot. I think the bigger issue is that a lot of Juri players are just really bad at storing and don’t find good spots to do it. Optimization of stores is key.
Her V Trigger could stand to be a bit cheaper, but I think the point is it’s meant more to buff her neutral game than to be a really nasty comeback thing. Although as people create more traps and situations with it, it could become different as well. Her dash becomes stupid fast once she activates V Trigger so it’s extremely easy for you to close the gap if you need to once you pop.
For once i agree with you. The main purpose of her VT is definitely not meant combos, offense, resets etc. it’s basically there to improve her neutral.
Which is a shame really but whatever.
This is the same conclusion that I came to as well once i started trying to really figure out the numbers on her combos. realizing how fast the bar drained for doing even simple vtrigger combos made it felt that it was overall not really meant as a properly combo oriented Vtrigger, and that clearly it was for boosting her neutral, and her setups/resets.
The only problem is, I don’t think its actually all that good for that yet either. There are a few tricky resets and setups that activating vtrigger gets you, but they aren’t that devastating compared to other 3 bar or 2 bar ones like Ibuki or Mika. And while she moves much faster and does get some improved combo potential like bison, it isn’t as strong as his in terms of how much activating it ramps you up. So right now, it feels like its in a watered down middle area between those two aspects of gameplay. You get a mediocre boost in neutral, and a mediocre boost in setups/resets for 3 bars. I feel like it almost should be a two bar vtrigger in its current form, and would need a boost somewhere to justify 3 bars.
But that being said, the next area I plan on trying to tackle in training mode is learning as many tricky setups and resets as I can. Because even though I find them lackluster, better to have them on hand than not.
Juri doesn’t have any resets and all of her pressure can be negated by holding down back and being ready for the grab even in VT. Imo Juri’s VT its just like Cammy’s but 3 bars, If it were 2 bars it would be ok for what it does extending combos and fake pressure, but I rather have a 3 bars vtrigger that can let you have resets and set ups for a potential come back.
She does have a few resets, they just aren’t super ambiguous. You can force air techs off her HP while in vtrigger, and she gets some good resets off anti air CC cr. HP. Her Vtrigger can also set up a few decent 50/50s on knockdown, but the scenarios where you can do them are pretty limited.
But yes. I think my main problem with her right now is just how weak her vtrigger is. Even with all her other things that could be nit picked, the functionality of said moves is in tact, even if some might be weaker than we would like.
Her Vtrigger is just hugely lacking for the cost, and usually by the time you can use it and you can probably kill your opponent with normal combos anyway.
To be fair on the bright side I use to depend too much on FSE in USF4 and having a shitty vtrigger now forced me to improve my game. And you are right normal combos are just as good as vtrigger combos as long as you know how to get your stores.
I feel like that is all she really needs. If they let her Vtrigger combo off her overhead, I feel like it wouldn’t be broken, it would give her a legit high/low, and make her 3 bar vtrigger worth the cost. It isn’t like you could spam it like crazy, as the cancels to just make the overhead safe on bock would eat up a lot of the meter.
I dont like some his answers there are much better options or sometimes it doesnt worth the risk.
Vs Mika’s drop kick is better b.hk (2hits) its faster and more reliable than lk dp ,and you can fallow it with almost anything for a big punish like b.hk (2 hits) xx lp dp xx CA
Vs Guile’s sonic booms is ok as long as you have perfectly spaced and stored hk fuha, but its easier with charged vskill.
Vs Urien’s tackle just forget it no human can react to that.
Vs Cammy m.dp beats her clean, or you can even try air grab.
Vs Laura just block her and you get free full punish
Vs Balrog I dont think she even have an aswer for anything
