So are you here today?
If I’m reading his post right, it sounds like ya’ll should be in town tomorrow, but looking for stuff to do on Wednesday. I would say just head to the Galleria honestly. You can chill, shop, eat, whatever pretty much there. Shouldn’t be too far from the medical center. Was there anything specific ya’ll were looking to check out?
Not that much to see in Hou, TBH. (You know it’s bad when you have to Google your own city for shit to do.) Just two thoughts:
- Maybe monkeys throwing poo will cheer you up. Zoo is 2 or 3 blocks away from MDA. Tickets should be less than 10$, don’t quote me.
- Don’t do NASA, 1 hr away from med center and not worth the trip.
Depending on how exhaustive those tests are, you may just want dinner. Some of the Greek places are good (they’ve been mentioned in this thread a few pages back), but really anything in the Galleria area should be decent food. (from med. center, go south to 610, take 610W to Westheimer exit.) I’m sure people here would be more than willing to give suggestions.
Although I believe that most of the people in Hou SRK would make good company, I also think that the sobering moments after a cancer diagnostic should be spent with non-randoms. It’ll make you look better in the eyes of your gf, and you can avoid the risk of a Dennys/IHOP city tour. Win win.
Best of luck with GFs tests.
Hey everyone,
I’ll be in Katy, TX and Houston for a week starting this Thursday. Are there arcades/meetups that have SF4 or SFxT anywhere?
Ranma you are correct. We are in Austin right now and I gotta say, it is a lot nicer than I imagined. We spent the night at my cousin’s place since driving from El Paso to Houston straight did not seem like a great idea. Thanks for all the replies; will definitely keep you guys updated on the craziness. Right now we are gearing up for Houston. Arcade UFO hours are messing me up though, was not expecting that 3 pm to 1 am.
Thanks for all the replies. I guess we’ll stay away from from that Denny’s/IHOP but the girlfriend loves both places.
Sup, i’m also from Katy.
TUESDAY nights the usual meetup place is at Monsters Arcade. We’re all there from about 7pm-6am. There was several mvc3, sf4, and sfxt setups, along with occasional games such as kof13 and 3s. I’m bringing my setup tonight (kof13 included). The fee is $6 for the night or $20 for the month (you can split with someone else to only pay $10 if you plan on staying in Houston and going back.
Starts around 7pm, most people get there around 10pm, and lasts usually until 6am. Mostly console Xbox, sometimes console ps3 setups, usually enough sticks but bring your own just in case. Here is a picture from last weeks monsters arcade scrub Tuesdays session.

Here is the info for Monsters Arcade. It may be a bit of a drive since you’re in Katy but it is worth it. There is always hype and many great players to play.
MONSTERS ARCADE
** 13626 Veterans Memorial Drive**
** Houston, TX 77014-1053**
** (281) 397-8511**
WEDNESDAY
Planet Zero has MLG wednesday’s, where they run weekly ranbats of the MLG games (Soul Caliber 5, Kof13, MK9)
I think it is $10 entry, 2/3, double elim. No cash payout, only weekly points for participating.
PZ also has SF4, SFXT, and MVC3 Tournaments on Thursday, same details, $10 2/3 double elim, no cash payout.
On Friday, they play anime games at PZ (arcana, melty, stuff like that.)
Of all the venues PZ is the only place that actually uses arcade cabinets (from japan) They have arcade SSF4AE2012, Kof13, Blaz (the new one) Tekken 6, and a bunch of other cabinets.
Planet Zero
11920A Westheimer, Houston, TX.
THURSDAY night (starting around 7pm lasting until midnight) there are weekly tournaments held at Dave & Busters. Usually it is just tournaments for MVC3/SFXT, and if there are enough entrants, SF4 and skullgirls. Venue fee is $5 (3 if you bring a complete setup), and $5 entry per game (100% cash payout 70/20/10). Again it is all console, mostly xbox, sometimes ps3, bring your own stick if you can.
Thursday Night Expose Series at Dave & Buster’s
** Dave and Busters 6010 Richmond Avenue Houston. Tx 77057 **
(the tournament will be in the back in the arcade area)
Any more questions, feel free to post, I’ll respond when I can.
The availability of SFxT at D&B is suspect… Last week I was the only one playing and spent most of my time messing around in training mode to no avail… Seems like less and less people want to play SFxT, but it shouldn’t be hard to get SF4 matches in. Tuesdays at Monster’s they always have SSF4 on a set up or two, there was SFxT on 1 last tuesday when I went.
I’d be going tonight but it looks like I’ve got plans.
SFXT has kind of fallen off after the initial hype, Houston is mostly an MVC3 scene, everything else is secondary.
Pretty much. Sucks for me being a SC5/SFxT player – hard to get practice in non-tournament settings.
SC5 scene is kinda their own beast, you’d have to be in the know when those guys are doing meetups, and generally they’ll be in Pasedena or something. Sometimes they show up at Planet Zero for their weeklies on Wednesday also.
From MDA if you go west on Holcombe and go north on Kirby, you should be in the Rice Village area. All sorts of great places to eat and some decent shops. Strip of bars down Morningside if you’re interested in drinks but my favorite place there is Benjy’s a little bit north from there. Great happy hour and atmosphere.
Going north on Fannin and heading towards Montrose will lead you to some good places to eat as well. Nippon or Uchi if you want Japanese/sushi, Katz’s Deli is also pretty good.
If you keep going east on Holcombe, stay away from 288 like the plague. Traffic is bad and it starts turning ghetto.
I’d rather bash my head against the wall than go to Planet Zero… I’ve NEVER liked that place…
Hey, I’m going to try to be at Monster’s today in an hour. Anything I should know before going? Never done any locals outside of casual play at Lone Star Kingwood so I’ll take as much detail as you’re willing to give.
This city is hella crazy. M.D. Anderson is a beautiful hospital; Chacho’s is pretty crazy. Huge amount of people hitting up those machine margaritas and nachos.
Definitely here right now. Ended up in a place called St.Francis Motel which charged by the hour. Girlfriend got super scared.
Tomorrow we more or less find out if we are in for the long haul. So far though, thanks for all the input. Will try to hit up the zoo tomorrow since it is the girlfriend’s birthday. Reliant Field is huge. First time I’ve seen a football field up close.
From you guys who are used to pot bonuses, can you guys tell me if most tournies split the pot bonuses like they split the main pot? At ARK we’ve always just added them to the main pot and split everything 70/20/10. Is that what most tournaments do?
Yeah, usually split like that or the more recent trend, if there’s plenty to go around split it into top 8, but that’s usually reserved for majors and stuff.
I gotcha. We’ll probably do things a little different at ARK V. Thanks for the info!
deteknician: Whats up? You should come out to D&B on thursdays cause thats were the best comp is at. There tournaments for all games and I heard this week skullgirls will be added to the lineup. Last week had about 35 or more players playing. Here is a video of what Thursday at D&B looks like. .
Also, if you or anyone else are on facebook join the houston video game network at http://www.facebook.com/groups/HoustonVGN I look forward to playing you all this thursday.
madoc: thanks for all that info, definitely appreciated. Will check it out, mostly interested in SF4 competition.
Repolusous: I will try to get there. Looking for strong competition.
