No. Instashield was used in 3k and the advance games iirc. I want it back too but i think the drop dash is more interesting at the moment especially for speed runs once the layouts of stages are known. Maybe they could put it on another button perhapsā¦I was thinking at first they could make it so if you tap the button you get shield and if you hold you get drop dash but thats a margin of error im not sure i would want to play withā¦almost the equivalent of putting the homing attack and boost on the same button.
Double tap for shield i can sorta get though i feel its not going to be as responsive. I dont quite follow your drop dash though. Are we pressing jump just as sonic lands to initiate the dash?
Think of it like knuckles digging move in one of the sonic adventures I think it was. If you want the insta shield, you gotta commit to it from what I remember. Ie. you have to press the jump x2 quickly, you cant jump and then press jump 1~2 seconds later.

So suppose you know you want instashielf, they you will of course do jump x2. Suppose you didnt and youve already jumped now decide to do drop dash, you cant instashield now anyway, so you hold the down button and press jump. Down right or down left for direction.
Thats personally how I would implement both.[/s]
edit: Scratch that, I just checked with an emulator. You CAN do it a few seconds later. In which case, either use a different button, or press and hold down button.
It doesā¦and thereās no speed cap just like the previous games. Thereās periods in some of the game footage where Sonic goes fast enough that the camera canāt keep up just like previous games. The Polygon vid @ 6:51 shows that off.
I get that they want to keep things as authentic to the Genesis titles as possible, but why would they keep something that legitimately interferes with playing the game?
That generally only happens in long straightaway sections of the game and usually the previous games donāt have random death traps in the way just out of sight or anythingā¦like sections of Chemical Plant Zone or the higher areas of Ice Cap Zone.
Interesting. The speed cap isnāt that restrictive in the 2 and 3 so you donāt notice it but in 4 itās really noticeable and annoying. I knew Sonic 1 had a speed cap on running since no matter what slope or loop he ran on he wouldnāt gain the appropriate momentum unless he rolled.
Thereās literally plenty of shit from S3&K thatās been revealed so far in the trailer as well as game play vids. Honestly it appears to be taking the best things from all the 16 bit games.
Sonic 3 and Knuckles probably had the best physics and level design to be honest. The fewest āgotchasā of unfair traps in the series outside of Sonic Advance 1.
I completely agree that that section of Carnival Night was bullshit, especially as a kid. Thereās that one Marble Garden path that leads to a dead end that you canāt return from if you jump off one those columns you run in a spiral around too soon also.
It sucks but thereās really only one instance of those things and ASIDE from those instances I love 3ās levels
