Adventures of Sonic was awesome. It was a good slapstick comedy show. I liked how incorporated the game’s levels into the show even if they weren’t always accurate.
AoTSH the only one I watched as a kid, and I remember staying up until midnight and then sneaking down to the TV because that’s the only time it would ever be on. I did like it back then, but looking back at it now…it’s pretty messed up, and I can see why a lot of people don’t like it. Still, out of context clips can be fun in short bursts.
While Sonic SatAM was gdlk I have to agree with this. The characters from the show blow ass. None of the freedom fighters were likable and I particularly found Sally to be an annoying twat. I personally never liked the idea having to know Sonic’s relatives.
Don’t get me started on the Archie comics. They needed an Crisis on Infinite Earths event to clean up all the garbage they had build up and start fresh.
The thing that instantly lets you know that they’re going to be terrible is none of them look like they would ever exist in a Sonic game.
Yeah, I don’t follow Archie at all, so a few weeks ago when I found out about the whole lawsuit fiasco, I cracked up. That whole scenario was one of the funniest development stories I’ve ever read. They probably wiped away over 50 dumbass characters from existence in the middle of their own plotline. That’s just hilarious.
The best thing about it is that it forced them to focus on the game universe more. The SatAM characters don’t look nearly as out of place. Sally and Antoine still look like they’ve transferred in from some fanfic with their stupid hair, but it’s still an improvement. I’ve enjoyed the material I’ve read from various snippets I’ve seen posted here or there. And it seems they finally made a 3-man squad out of the Fighters characters. If they’d done this sort of thing from the start I might have given a shit about the comic.
That’s plays a big part as why I dislike those characters. I can’t see characters like Sir Charlies, Scourge, Sally and all the other original characters existing in the games. I hope they never do
Archie did me in a long time ago. Back with Sonic Adventure decided to use the Eggman name for Robotnik and redesign him. What does Archie do to in light of this? Kill off the main Robotnik and replace him with his pre-existing alternate dimension robot counterpart and give him a new body with the SA design and change his name to Eggman because reasons. Went with a convoluted method to explain a simple change. Why couldn’t Eggman be a derogatory nickname like it was initially used in the game? Why couldn’t Robotnik go on a diet and the physical change result in him getting a new outfit? It didn’t need all that.
I haven’t tracked Archie post Crisis but I still don’t like the Freedom fighters and their new designs. It still have terrible artists on the book. Even in newer issues I see the occasional odd facial expression or body language.
One of the original artists for Sonic who helped make things ‘convoluted’ by Hawkingbird’s standards left Archie and tried to do a spin off of of characters from the franchise that he made like Julie Su. It’s a big ass mess and it’s dumb but Ian Flynn started taking over writing duties and tried to roll with the story that was left for him and the writer who left was still raising a big fuss over the use of his characters. It was increasingly becoming a problem so Ian started cleaning the story out and begin hitting the soft reboot button on the story a couple of times until pretty much anything that occurred before the Sonic and Megaman crossover didn’t matter.
If people want to start reading the comic you can start either with the 1st soft reboot which is Genesis that didn’t completely wipe out everything or you can start completely fresh with the 2nd soft reboot which was the Sonic and Megaman crossover comic. It’s a pretty big change but it’s for the better…Ian’s doing a pretty solid job imo. They’re actually about to lead into a Sonic Unleashed adaptation.
Thanks for the heads up @Sonichuman I been reading the Megaman Archie comics and was actually gonna ask here what are the best sonic comics to read and which are standalone in a sense. I guess I will start from the reboot, unless theres anything before then thats worth reading.
But me being a completionist I will probably start from the beginning
It’s weird. A sonic game where I’m more concerned with the characters than the gameplay. I care about the gameplay, but so far we haven’t seen a lot of cutscenes and they said plenty of times that they wanted to focus on the four and how they interact with each other. I can only hope they’ll make Amy a lot more like her comic self, and thus be a lot more likeable.
You don’t need cutscenes to develop characters. From the video footage there was plenty of banter between the characters during the gameplay sequences. The characters won’t shut up during the boss fight.
Yeah there’s banter, so much so that it worries me. But so far it’s all just sort of non specific quips. I don’t NEED cutscenes persay, maybe if there was more of a back and forth during the gameplay. But I’m willing to bet a lot of the actual characterization is in the cutscenes.
