The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.7 2017 its been generations since the last good sonic game

This man is doing God’s work.

toejam and earl are two of the most classic sega characters ever. it would be borderline criminal if they didnt make it in.

some others off the top of my head…

axel from SOR
sketch turner (comix zone)
edge (panzer dragoon saga)
burning rangers

a level based off of TJ+E 2 would look awesome as well.

sonic the fighters, fighting vipahs, and virtual fightah 2 dropped today

I hear the flow of sonic the fighters is pretty good and with old school vets playing it so I expect some great matches, im going to pick it up myself in the near future when I get the chance. I wonder if honey is fully playable; it has a lobby so you can watch fights and a tournament mode. plus metal sonic and eggman

its 400 points so yeah its good deal

Sonic the fighters is a fun game but nothing deep about it. Just a good distraction, I know a lot of people hate the game but 4 bucks isn’t too bad.

Hey guys, if the Unleashed/Colours/Generations style of gameplay is dropped, how do you think 3D sonic should be in the future? I personally think:
[]The spin dash MUST return. Not only is it iconic, but it’s also one of the most fun things about the originals and the Adventure games.
[
]Boosting (as well as air boosting) should be removed. As much as I love just boosting through a stage in Unleashed and Generations, it takes some interactivity out of the game (boost to win).
[]Sliding must stay. It’s really exhilarating to slide under things when you’re running really fast.
[
]Wall jumping should stay but it should be tweaked a bit to make it a bit more fun. Think Super Mario 64.
[]It should be ALL 3D. No 2D sections.
[
]You should only be able to homing attack if there’s actually a target to hit. I don’t really like the whole idea of Sonic just leaping forward when you press the button again.
[]Levels should be a bit slower paced than Unleashed and Generations, more akin to how the Adventure games were. One of the problems with Unleashed and Generations is that Sonic moves so fast that you can’t react to a lot of things, leading to some trial and error gameplay.
[
]To balance out the decrease in speed in regular levels, Something similar to the mach speed sections from 06 should return, except not completely ass. I think two differences that would make them a lot more playable are 1) tilting the stick left and right will make you strafe instead of turn and 2) you should be able to control yourself in midair.
[]There should be some sort of hub world. It’s a lot more interesting than a simple level select menu, imo. The hub world should be very large and open, allowing for a lot of running around and exploration. The only characters in the hub world should be other Sonic characters. No townspeople. I think it would be interesting if there were some side missions to do with the hub world (e.g. Knuckles broke the Master Emerald again somehow and there are pieces of it hidden in each stage. After you find them all, you bring them to him and he gives you some sort of reward.) However, these should be entirely optional.
[
]Sonic should be the only playable character. It’s just better that way. It just is.

Thoughts?

If they drop generations style of 3d sonic then sonic is dead to me.

Hub worlds should be like this:

Man you know, that actually would be really cool.

I had this post in response to your bulletin stuff and then firefox ate it…Anyway. This is actually pretty damn close to how I envision an open world/ hub world for sonic should be. It even has momentum to make use of the spin dash. It has some issues here and there but Sega needs to take a look at this and build on it.

Personally, I can live without it. The way the Adventure series controls allows the spin dash to be viable (but not very practical), but it’s pretty much useless in the Unleashed/Generations style gameplay.

Boosting does nothing but replace holding up/down/left/right and getting the opportunity to have a hitbox that most people think is godlike when it’s not. There are spikes, there are enemy hitboxes (not enough of these, actually - enemies COULD be more threatening against boosting in the current gameplay), there are pits, other objects like pilars of lava, and there is a boost meter that requires meter management that doesn’t make boosting a free ticket to the finish line. Managing your boost meter means you have to interact with enemies, rings and rainbow trick rings and sometimes find places where sliding is more efficient if you want the reward boosting offers. In Generations, boosting while hopping allows Sonic to hop further. Running at boost speed on the ground and then jumping without boost allows Sonic to jump further which is a legitimate platforming strategy in stages such as Sky Sanctuary 2. I’m always under the impression that most of the people who dislike the boost feature don’t really make the most of it, but when you try to, the difficulty of the game gradually rises.

So long as it doesn’t get nerfed again.

You mean work in 3D?

Have you played Sonic Unleashed’s 2D sections? Generation’s 2D sections were much too simplified from the exception of a few mission stages, but in Unleashed, you could take better advantage of all Sonic’s skills in most levels. It’s really fun and involved.

That’s not a homing attack, that’s an air dash. It can be considered a platforming tool, and even though it’s shorter yet more accessible in Generations than Unleashed, it’s not exactly useless.

What’s wrong with trial and error? There was less trial and error overall in Generations than there was in Unleashed. You don’t have to boost.

You know this is why we have boosting in the 3D games and if Sonic is going to strafe/side-step then Sonic Team is likely going to make him dodge obstacles (thus trial and error). It just makes sense to me that Sonic moving really fast in 3D (or even in 2D) is going to require some form of trial and error, and it would be more rewarding the faster he goes because it will seem more challenging (and if you like this sense of speed, more thrilling). Dunno how to strike a medium here.

I don’t think I have anything against hub worlds in Sonic games, but the Adventure series as well as 360 Unleashed proved that I could live without them. Outside of the story, I just want the option or a mode to dive into a stage with minimal screens/loading like how Generations has it set up.

I don’t mind other playable characters if they have a solid gameplay, and so far Sonic Team hasn’t proven to the masses that they can successfully pull this off without giving a skillset to a group of characters (I.e. SA2 & Sonic Heroes) opposed to individualizing characters with their own skills. It’s not something I’m overly concerned about because in the end, I’m in it to play as Sonic The Hedgehog. If other characters are going to have a gameplay, it should be their own and it should be solid. Otherwise, I gotta go fast!

I can see myself buying a Sonic game like this, all it needs is some more funds. Looks very good for a fan game (engine)

I think that if boosting is kept, then it should be what its name implies: a boost. You should only be able to use it if you’re actually already running.

For those interested…one of the games the Game Grumps are playing is Sonic 06

Over the holidays I’m going to replay all of the main series Sonic games that I own (undecided on Sonic 06, I don’t really want to play that) so that I can actually figure out if each game actually as good/bad as I remember it. I already finished Unleashed, and my verdict on it is that it’s a very good game with some minor issues that aren’t bad enough to ruin the whole game. Right now I’m playing through the first Adventure game. I’ve already finished Sonic’s, Tails’, Knuckles’ and Amy’s stories.

[]Sonic plays AMAZINGLY in this game. It’s the perfect blend of speed and platforming, and the platforming actually controls well (unlike 06, or Colours either if memory serves). Spin dash jumping up inclines and gaining ridiculous height is so freaking fun. There are only a couple of problems I have: the levels are a bit too linear, Lost World in particular, and the camera will screw you up from time to time.
[
]I really hated playing as Tails. He was so similar to Sonic, except just not quite there. At least with all of the other characters, they’re their own thing but with Tails, he’s just an inferior version of Sonic and it just makes me wish I was playing Sonic instead.
[]Knuckles is 10^9999999 times better than his SA2 counterpart. Out of all of his levels, the one that took me the longest was only 5 minutes! In SA2, treasure hunting levels could go for up to 20 or even 30 minutes. So dumb.
[
]Amy I would enjoy a lot more if she was as fast as the other characters. I really hope that they just let her be fast in future games. I mean, she was fast in Heroes so what’s the big deal? Other than that, Amy’s gameplay wasn’t actually too bad.
I don’t hate the other characters, but I still think that just turning the game off after finishing Sonic’s story is the best idea.

Being fast isn’t her schtick though. Amy was only ‘fast’ in hereos because the strong fatass dumb cat and and the extremely polite flying bunny weren’t.

he sounds like he is playing the game for this first time, sonic adventure wasnt all that…lol

cream got nerfed to hell and back, she debuted as a character who could run just as fast as sonic to now a mild cameo assist character (think toad from mario)

I don’t know if I can trust your opinion on this since you weren’t in it. =D

what? oh…-_-…

I was just chillin in mah space pod…

I know Amy isn’t supposed to be fast, but the game is more fun when she is. Making the game fun takes priority over being consistent and/or making sense IMO.

They could do that…or do something that more focuses on her bashing shit with her Hammer, hammer combat(I.E. giving her certain moves for certain situations so combat isn’t completely repetitive), and have her be more focused on platforming. Didn’t you must make a complaint earlier about Tails being too close to Sonic but just a bit inferior? Just making her faster would pretty much be putting her in the same area.
