The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

Most of those are from back in the day. Those games wouldn’t get scored anywhere near that high now a days.

You could say that about any old game.

Depends upon the game. I enjoyed the hell out of SA and I can still play it and enjoy it but it hasn’t aged well.

Yup. This ain’t the 90s where the Japanese had the video game market. American’s got it by the throat now.

SA really hasn’t aged well. I can’t enjoy that game outside it’s OST now. Can probably say the same about SA2 in spite of it’s refinements.

Wonder when SA2 will be on PSN and XBL? I wouldn’t mind getting that when it’s on a discount.

Oh yeah Sonic 230 was released recently and…man…calm Eggman is creepy-

Sonic 230

[details=Spoiler]So yeah ROBOTICIZED SALLY! She was roboticized for our sins ;.;
The off-panel short at the end was hilarious too

The comic book version of Eggman destroyed his Universe . . . which automatically makes him better than the one from the games.

Yeah i saw that page where Eggman loses his shit for a second and thought that was great. I almost thought his mind was gonna get shattered again within the first 2 panels and then he’s like ‘NOPE…FUCK THIS’

where r u getting these comics from?

when did his mind get shattered the first time?

yeah I figured I was wrong on some of it. I actually got 2 different incidents mixed up. Long story short though Eggman got really fed up with losing and went for a final showdown hedgehog to mech locked in a room. He got beat pretty badly and was so outraged by the fact that he lost that he ended up having his mind break from the frustration. He was pulling out his mustache and everything. ‘The chaos is the constant’ is a reference to no matter how much planning he does Sonic always seems to find away out of situations either by sheer luck or something that just seems to favor him…that pretty much slowly brought him out of his broken state and began the whole ‘time to hit the reset button’ plan.

I’m so behind on the comics, holy garbage.

What order am I supposed to read these books in anyway? >_<

So what’s your general opinion of the Archie Sonic comic these days? I used to collect them as a kid but they kind of lost their appeal after a while. I always found the romantic bits between Sonic and Sally to be awkward. Even as a kid I wondered why a hedgehog would be interested in a squirrel or whatever she is. Having a love interest never seemed to be Sonic’s style to me, which is even apparent in the games. The art also got pretty bad around the time I stopped collecting.

So how does it stack up now? I’m gonna do some research on the story happening now, I just wondered about your opinion from one Sonic fan to another.

I also find the idea of sonic having a romantic interest to be OOC.

The art in recent issues has more consistent quality, though they do tend to go back to the old art every once in a while.

… we need this Robotnick in the games.

About the Archie Sonic comic:
Anyone who wants to read it could start by reading the TPBs that collect the very first issues of the series, but IMHO, start from #160:
Yes you’ll be skipping on a LOT of stuff, but that issue is the begining of Ian Flynn’s run, who has been writing the Sonic comics since. His work is pretty good and fun IMO.
Take note that the comic took lots of liberties from the games, so don’t go in expecting to see stuff from the games taking too big a precedence (sp).

As I wrote above, start from #160: You can order back issues or DL them off the iStore I think.

…and to answer your other question: Most of the issues from 160 til now (and Sonic Universe) were drawn by Ben Bates or Tracy Yardley! Both their art is pretty good IMO.

I always wanted to collect the comics and keep up with it but I didn’t have a comic book store in close vicinity of me in the boonies and the place where I got the first 2 I ever owned. A story involving Sonic losing his speed through a freak accident and getting hounded by Combots (…think that’s what they were called…searches through comics yeah…they were pretty much humanoid robots in camo that had tentacle like appendages similiar to Omega Red with invisibility cloaks, missles…come to think of it…the designs of these guys were far more serious than most of Robotnik’s inventions) while trying to find a way to get his speed back and the first issue in the Knuckles mini story back in the day.

They’ve been trying varying art styles with varying degrees of success but overall I’m fine with how it looks currently. Spaz’s artwork for the series was and still is great imo (examples: 1,2, 3)though he mostly does covers now and I think he’s helping with the Megaman comic as well now.Tracey(http://yardley.deviantart.com/gallery/)has been doing a pretty solid job though. Looking through some of the art of some of comics I missed out on I don’t blame you for stopping on some of it.

As for how it stacks up now? I’ve been enjoying it so far ever since I was able to start collecting at issue 139. If you’re expecting Marvel/DC tier stuff you’ll probably be disappointed by I’m pretty satisifed with the way how things work out in the comics. Sometimes it’s more lighthearted and other times there may be an actual character that may die off/turn evil (I.E. Knuckles turning into Enerjack was a big WTF.) And a lot of side characters actually get more time in the spotlight than they could ever get to do in the games. Some characters pretty much are like there game counterparts still with some changes here and there. I think the comic has been pretty solid so far. Read the synopsis on Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_the_Hedgehog_(comics)#Storyline_Summary_.28issues_1-225.29 for some reason I’m having trouble hyperlinking stuff right now) to see if it’s something you might dig.

Comic Eggman has been a nice antagonist. He can be slightly comical when need be but it seems a lot of things he does in this game are all to lead up to some end game he has planned in the future. Often times characters don’t even realize what he’s been up too until it’s too late like Lien-Da (leader of a rival echidna gang that prefers technology) who he actually revived after an incident and made her look good as new with some upgrades…and of course a bomb. He basically told her everything he did to her including the bomb and why. He’s way smarter than his game counterpart. It’s only been recent that with his desperation and his snap into madness that we’ve been seeing a bit more of a sinister side in his demeanor. I’m interested in how the current events will turn out.

Edit:

lol @ Tizoc’s avatar. Man…He was so happy with himself until he hit that button and nothing happened lmao.

^I know, his reaction in the next panel is hilarious XD.

Oh and for those that want to see just how vile and dangerous comic Eggman can be:
[spoiler=]Eggman builds a device that can robotocize an entire planet-

Guy is like a villian straight from HnK.
We definintlly (sp?) need to see more of this in the games

Something I remember about the archie sonic comic too. And wondering if anyone remembers this. There was actually a preview mini comic that came with a issue of EGM I believe around 1992-1993? Was printed on newspaper like paper I believe as well.

I still have my subscription copies of issue #0-#3 of the mini series somewhere as well. I think Scott Shaw? did the covers/art for it then? And are these worth anything anymore? Just wondering. I’m remembering something like the walrus has had two different names too. Rotor and I think it’s Boomer now?
