The Sonic the hedgehog thread V.3-2012 Sonic 4: Episode 2

Yea I dunno i’ve had fun with pretty awful ass games.

Or you don’t have 10 minutes to spare.

Still in shock someone defended heroes:(

I don’t get the hate on heroes I thought it was pretty damn good not perfect by any means but it definitely delivered on the sonic feel. On metacritic it has a 72 on xbox but 66 on pc/ps2 are the ports really that different?

i think the part that stuck out the most in heroes as far as fun is concerned was the Super Sonic battle. I just looked up a youtube video of it. I was also reminded how ridiculously easy the special stages were.

As long as I can play with the level select/sound test/debug mode codes that you can’t in the XBL Arcade version, this will be worthwhile. I don’t like the limited features in the arcade ports of the classic games, especially with Sonic 3. After completing the game, sometimes I just wanna run back certain stages.

Sonic adventure 3 would be gdlike

I liked Sonic Heroes.
There I said it.

For me what really bothered me about hereos was the poor level designs and the wonky controller. The presentation felt dated and I dunno…didnt heros basically trash sonics reputation?

Wasnt unleashed suppose to make up for what heros did to the franchise…thats what I always thought.

I think it’s funny people still want “Sonic Adventure 3” after how “Sonic 4” turned out. Seriously, names really don’t mean anything when it comes to games these days. Never have, never will. A game can have a title to make you think it’s promising and be just as shit as any other random game.

And Sonic 06 is basically Sonic Adventure 3 in everything but name and it ended up being a pre-alpha build of Sonic Adventure 3 on a disk that was released to the public. If you pay attention to the basic structure of the game and how it progresses it’s basically a carbon copy of the original Sonic Adventure.

Sonic Adventure 3 =/= Good game

It’s been forever since I’ve played Heroes and I don’t remember everything about it that I disliked, but your post does help me remember some of them. Heroes didn’t have a great OST even though Senoue was in charge of it (he was in charge of Sonic 4 and that was by far from what I’ve played, his worst to date. However, he was on point in Adventure 1 and 2.) Sonic Team had no answer for the existing camera issues since Sonic Adventure 1. Personally, I found it lacked replay value due to the story structure of having to play 4 teams who all have the exact same abilities. I can’t see how it feels like a Sonic game when it takes you away from playing Sonic and instead give you 3 carbon copies of Sonic, Tails and Knuckles. The stages that at best were somewhat pretty with no shortage of enemies, but were less inspiring than the stages in SA1. The CGI cutscenes were pretty. The dialogue was corny. Parts of the game felt poorly recycled from Adventure 2. This game was the genesis of Sonic’s downfall.

From what I remember, Unleashed was supposed to bring Sonic back up to speed, but Unleashed (in regards to the HD version) started out using a genius concept with the daytime/speed stages while the rest of the game to the very end felt like a really big fuck you. Unleashed HD is a good example of a game being capable of providing fun, but in it’s entirety, it just swipes your pants down and laughs at the player.

I never played unleashed but it didn’t look so bad I’m the speedruns I’ve seen, yet in the comments and from sell friends they all say the exact something. Why is unleashed the asshole of the franchise?

Also if it’s because of the difficulty that’s a good thing IMO, challenges are good.

lol My BODY IS READY…

I so want this game… I wonder what the bosses are gonna look/play like…

I can summarize my hatred for sonic heroes (and how it’s one of two sonic games I’ve never fully completed) as such:

  • BUGGY AS FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK! (though this may be more of a mechanics issue)
I haven’t played 06 so can’t say it’s the buggiest game ever, but it sure as hell is the buggiest I’ve ever played. It’s fucking ridiculous how many “pits of despair” there are in the game and the fact that it seems sonic is magnetically attracted to them just adds to the misery. I can think of way too many times where I fucking launch high, fall onto a platform (while not pressing anything), then sonic just runs right of the fucking edge. Furthermore, there’s also rail canyon where tutorial says “hit a direction and the A button (gc ver.) to hop from rail to rail”. I do so, and hop straight into my demise. FUCK THAT SHIT!

  • "Level up!"
First of all, there’s no place in sonic games for this crap. It takes long enough to reach max lv when you’re FINALLY able to take things out in 1 shot (you know, the way it’s ALWAYS been)… then you fall off a cliff and guess what?! YOU HAVE TO START ALL OVER AGAIN! Seriously, whose dumb idea was this?!

There’s more, but it’s been too long since I last touched that game and I have no intention of doing so.

That game was horrible…from the opening theme to the story to the gameplay. I remember sonic and chars running off shit by themselves too. I remember sections of levels not working like they were meant to…things like three branching pathways obviously to signal you to go into power formation…and doing it, only to have some of the characters disappear and only get partial reward. Things like doing espio’s tornado move and getting hit becuase the enemy land near you. I honestly felt like power formation was mostly useless…once you leveled up speed ,you were good to go. Changing formation slowed you down a hella lot too.

Oh dear… where do I start… somewhere on page 10 and on…

The game wouldn’t be so difficult if it wasn’t so retarded. IMO, it’s more retarded than Sonic Heroes, but it’s only saving grace is how well it does 3 things (sense of Sonic’s speed, graphics and 70% of the time, the music.) But the thing that really makes the game as you say, “the asshole of the franchise” to me was the combination of poor level design, poor controls (daytime Sonic, final boss while controlling the temple creature), poor camera controls, and some necessary 3D elements that Sonic Team somehow forgot to put in the game. When you come to a challenging area in a level, right after a lamp post, there is a 1Up. Why? Because you are going to fall a thousand times to your death before you reach the next lamp post with the 1Up after it.

If you want to know how fun Unleashed HD can be, by all means download the trial version of the game. It’s similar to the modern Sonic demo in Generations but the gameplay of the Unleashed demo is a really good overall presentation of the hedgehog engine. IMO, that’s all you’ll need because the rest of the game… Unless you can get it for free (however you define free), I wouldn’t buy it.

I wanted to respond to some stuff on this thread but I got distracted by IGN’s streaming of Sonic Generations. They shot it off screen so it’s not direct feed unfortunately but you can hear the music pretty clear.

I reccomend starting at around 2:50. ‘EVERYBODY’S SUPER SONIC RACING…’

Edit:…man the way how the music just seems to flow into each other at the hub world…

Edit2: I need to go change my pants…Dat Classic Speed Highway.

Edit 3: Modern Crisis City = I dare you to boost to win.

I’m actually only going to listen to it and not watch it. I really think I’ve seen more than enough of this game in spite of not having an idea how much content is actually going to be in it. Just thinking that by the time I get the game I’m gonna be like, “Er, I saw that and it could’ve been a surprise.” lol a part of me really wished that i didn’t watch the playthrough of City Escape. It looks pretty short. It’s almost here, though. If there are reviews of the game before it’s release, I’ll be avoiding the video reviews.

On another note, i love how the classic sonic theme speeds up with the speed shoes power up.

I’m also just listening to it. Totally wasn’t expecting Super Sonic Racing! This game is definitely going to be a bigger nostalgia bomb than I was originally anticipating.

Someone made a LTTP thread on Gaf for Sonic 2006. Apparently this guy hated Sonic Colors and thought it was garbage and said ‘There is no way Sonic 06 is worse than this’. He’s chronicling his first time playing the game and my fucking sides are hurting.
