The backlash was for several reasons.
For starters the movement was mainly organized by tumblr/twitter feminist which used a very terrible tragedy as leverage to advertise their ideas/values.
The second problem is that it gave these women a cheap justification to attack and generalize all men as potential rapist and abusers. In addition to this, no man was allowed to object or criticize the movement because if they did they were derailing or missing the point of the conversation. Basically the hashtag was clumsy propaganda to evangelize radical tumblr feminist sentiment.
There was also a clusterfuck of messed up ideas such as that men should all act as unofficial bodyguards for women.
