All of this is very true, when you have backwards movement and a fireball to force some respect for movement.
When you don’t have a fireball, the only way to do this is to use your normals… at which point you open yourself up to slides and things like Ed’s st.hk, etc etc.
I’ve never CC’d a neutral jump with Gief. Back dash, sure, but not neutral jumps. Doesn’t happen on oki, the st. roundhouse whiffs after the dash. Zoning may be bad in this game, but Gief is no longer impervious to rushdown like he was in previous games because of five-frame SPDs and no invulnerability on Lariat. As long as you’re plus on block you can lock him down pretty easily. Churning simply doesn’t work in this game due to slower SPDs. 70 frames recovery for Gief’s main attack is simply ridiculous. An entire second plus 10 frames is enough for a back dash plus a full jump in combo, that’s just plain silly.
As I said, if Gief is so good, where are all the tournament winning Giefs? Only Snake Eyez has won CEO with him, and he didn’t even use Gief throughout the entire tournament.
Gief is always going to have a bunch of shitty matchups because of his archetype. He’s also going to have some pretty good matchups in his favour. That’s the life of a Gief player. He actually has it pretty good in V since zoning is almost non-existent. Yeah, some characters can kind of zone him out but it’s way less effective than past games like IV where Gief players just had to put down the controller against Sagat/Seth.
Decided to test my mettle in Survival Mode again. This time with Abigail. Made quick work of most of the CPU with his run and flip over move.
Then once I got to the 40’s, it all went downhill. Got my ass saved by Fight Request a few times, but it wasn’t happening at 47. Had a double KO with Vega and it was fucking over. I don’t think I’m going to torture myself any longer for some Fight Money. Fuck that. Fuck that.
GG’s Lord. Lemme know how the connection was on your side. I’ll have to learn how to challenge some of Ed’s stuff better. I always end up getting hit inbetween his c.MK and the psycho upper because I think it’s my turn in then it just comes out on block any way. I guess you were just screwing up the hit confirm or something? That was funny lol.
True again, but I can’t remember the last time I whiffed chuns slide against a non fireball thrower. People throw shit out against fireballs to hit their startup, is what I’m saying, you aren’t going to get this at that kind of rate against non fireball throwers. It will be harder to make those moves wiff. People will wiff things like mediums and stuff at a much more consistent rate when playing versus normals over fireballs.
Like I don’t have to worry about or get hit by random hk hurricanes when I’m not using a fireballer… and consequently I don’t get to punish things like random hurricanes when I’m not using a fireballer. Your character matters as to what you can and can’t easily deal with. Gief is hard to AA if you don’t have a DP. But if you do… it’s pretty easy as long as he’s in range.
Another example is zeku against those moves… he won’t get much in old form because of his lack of normals range and lack of fast ranged cancels. But in young he can get a lot if he’s fast.
