Yeah Jiyuna’s channel will have ENG commentary team
To my knowledge Koihime and UNIEL are the closest you can get to “Street Fighter” in the anime fighters subgenre, as in the combat is more footsie/neutral/ground oriented than other anime fighters
Cooperation cup was fucking amazing last year, I was JUST THINKING ABOUT IT LAST WEEK, had no idea it was so soon, what are the odds.
Maybe Devil Jin the guy who claims 3S was a bad game will be trapped in the world of Street Fighter 3 again this weekend. (2003 Deviljin SRK archive post, never forget)
So nobody’s going to talk about the Good Things Ryu got for S3? Ryu mains trying to keep it on the downlow that they actually addressed some of his issues, while also giving him unga VT?
-Sounds like they’ve fixed combo drops from counterhit s.MP
-Notes say they adjusted his hitbox on c.MK. It can’t be anymore stubbier than it already is. I’m betting it’s to increase it slightly to stop it whiffing in certain cases.
-Ryu can finally end combos on crouchers with his donkey kick.
VT1 is now so good, it’s not even worth talking about his new VT2:
-All fireballs now recover faster and do more damage.
-Increased juggle points on SRKs.
-lvl 1 fireball is -2 ob(!), lvl 2 fireball is 0(!!)
Now imagine this situation: Ryu decides to dash up to you and use sweep into VT cancel (or even Axe kick which is +ob on VT cancel in S3). You’ve blocked it, but now Ryu is immediately throwing plasma in your face. If you pressed a 3f light you are getting hit with plasma. If you block the plasma you are now placed in a -2 situation, but you are pushed out by the fireball too far for you to threaten a throw, but Ryu is still close enough to threaten EX DP (which may or may not juggle…) if you try and press a button. Ryu can basically keep stealing turns until his VT runs out.
This makes his VT not unlike Juri’s VT1, but Ryu gets a few advantages still:
-The usual response to Juri’s VT1 is to “just block”. But Ryu playing chicken with charged fireballs will force you to make a move eventually or you will eat a 0-ob or unblockable.
-Ryu can throw up to 9 fireballs before his VT drains, Juri can only use 7 stores iirc, and she’ll probably have less than that once it becomes a 2 bar VT.
-Even if you V-reversal his fireball. VT1 turns Ryu into Honest Karate Man, with a legit fireball game (and possibly DPs that juggle). He doesn’t have to force his way in if he doesn’t want to. He can just chill back and do some c.MK x fireball like it was the old days.
Btw, I don’t think these changes are suddenly going to make Ryu TT or anything. Just want to point out his buffs are just as big as Juri getting a 2 bar VT1.
Yeah I wanted to talk about this in a TLDR character analysis post I want to do, but got too lazy and only did one for Ryu. But since you brought up Ed:
I agree with you. The buffs he got were nice and they emphasised the things he was already good at (pressing buttons for days), but I don’t think they’re enough to make up for the loss of his throw loop. Having a throw loop was a big part of what opened people up to Ed pressing buttons in their face so all in all he’s coming out weaker next season.
On the plus side, the fix to his combos dropping was needed, and I think his most significant buff was c.MP being +3 ob. There’s much less pushback on it compared to his other good buttons, and he can now frametrap 3f moves by just pressing c.MP up to 3 times before he’s finally pushed back. If the throw nerf is still allowing him to be close enough to meaty with c.MP Ed is still gonna get some good stagger pressure I think.
The cr.mk pushback reduction was one of the things that I was looking forward to the most for Ed but there is also apparently a hitbox reduction at the same time (note were a bit unclear) so it might fuck up his corner max damage combo if you don’t have VT. Cr.mp being +3 on block doesn’t look to be super-amazing at face value and the +5 on hit doesn’t mean anything unless st.mp > cr.mp xx Upper now works with the extra frames on hit.
As good as the new VT1 fireballs sound for Ryu, it’s still a game where plenty of characters have anti projectile EX moves and Ryu has clear patterns for when he wants to do string of fireballs. So not only is he dealing with a game where the fireballs are temporary and don’t do much chip, he can’t really follow them into offense the same way Juri can where one fireball throw plus a buffed dash puts her into frame trap range.
The big issue with Juri’s VT1 was that since it was a 3 bar if she was coming back from a large deficit, blocking her down was enough to take minimal damage and escape ok if you made good reads on all of the frame traps. Now that it’s a 2 bar it’s something that will be part of her game at least twice a match, especially since she has 3 frame buttons and an EX DP to not have to worry about spending V Reversals too often. VT1 makes it so she has enough room to do the damage she needs to do, then get it again when you need it to finish the round. It wasn’t ideal as a comeback trigger, but as something that buffs her offense and makes it so she can close the gap instantly, it’s going to be pretty strong for that now. Especially since it comes with a fireball that can’t be slid under by low profiles, very difficult to EX move punish on reaction and she can easily follow with her buffed dash.
It’s an Option Select.
For those who hated The Last Jedi, it’s about how he doesn’t want SFV to be garbage.
For those who loved it, it’s about how he won’t be able to handle the awesomeness.
Ok… You do realize how short VT1 is and how Parry gives less V-Gauge now, right?
VT1 is basically “play a good old school shoto for 10 seconds”. It doesn’t fix Ryu’s issues.
Donkey Kick hitting crouchers is fine and all, until you realize that it pretty much resets neutral to almost full screen on every non-EX hit.
For some matchups, that’s kinda cool, even though his fireball is ass so good luck with that. For others, like say, Guile, that’s a death sentence.
Ryu might not be the worst anymore, but if he reaches low-mid, he got lucky.
The buffs are pretty good, but they don’t mean much if VT1 last as long as I did the first time I had sex.
How are you suppose to get in position to do these cool things if it’s expires so quickly. It’s not a VT where you can force your way in to and Ryu himself lacks the mobility and move set to give him a good chance at those opportunities in such a short time. In order for this V Trigger to really be good, it needs to either last at least 50% longer or last a very long time and only suffer major drains when Ryu throws a fireball.
As for your comment about him being able to throw 9 fireballs. That’s not a realistic number. Most Ryu players will get 5-6, and that’s them trying to use it as much as possible without leaving themselves wide open to get jumped in on. I don’t see how he could throw 9 unless he did it in the corner where he can throw one after another ASAP.
In the end I actually think Ryu will be OK in AE. He got some good buffs that address some of his biggest weaknesses. But I’m still leaning heavily towards VT2 unless VT1 got a timer buff. Doesn’t matter that those fireballs are safer at point blank or that he gets DP juggles when those things need time to set up and VT1 doesn’t provide it. I hope that’s not the case though.
