THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

That’s a really tough question to answer because it has a lot to do with who attacks first, what attack they use, where are they located in relation to one another etc. etc. There’s really no one answer. The one thing that does dominate is air throws, which only Chun-Li, Guile, Vega and Cammy have. afaik guile’s backbreaker throw is the best, but they all have really good range and beat out a lot of moves. So if I had to answer, I’d say these 4.

Hey everyone, I’m not exactly new to SFIV (I’ve put a couple hundred hours into it over the last few months) but I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers on my Vega, Gouken, and Seth. My PSN ID is zacfitz. Help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all, I just got an arcade stick and SFIV, so I guess I’m new, been around the forum a bit (promising to join the community) but finally a part.

Anyway, I do have a bit of a commentary, the essentials of combo construction, honestly, why should we care? Ok seeing which moves actually combo into what, that’s important, but what I’m concerned about is what comes after, symmetry, aesthetics, etc.

I didn’t think SF was an interpretative dance competition…

Ok, I understand using it as a top-level specialized guide, but… as basic guide, really?

It just strikes me as extremely weird, combo construction should be inherently based on effectiveness, and having combo vids as the primary purpose seems… wrong. Speaking of which, I prefer gameplay compilation vids/highlight reals anyway.

Hi everyone, I am a 2D noob so my goal is to learn the fundamentals of 2D mindgames. Which SF4 character is the best to start off with if I want to learn the fundamentals? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

EDIT: Also, I just thought of another question…who is the joke character in this game? Not necessarily has to be bad, but someone who has funny moves and just makes playing against them more fun and easy-going. Heck, while we’re at it who’s the worst character in the game?

I’m just looking at several options I can start with to learn more about the game while having fun.

Some characters are harder to learn than others (Viper, Dhalsim) , but you’ll get the most out of the game if you pick a character you enjoy playing as, regardless of who’s easier to learn. You just have to try them all.

I’m not sure what you’re criticizing. There are certainly combo videos that show off impractical combos that “look cool” or whatever. But those are for entertainment and a way to show off skill. Like trick shots in basketball or billiards. There are an abundance of videos that demonstrate practical combos, strategies, set-ups, mix-ups, etc. You just have to differentiate one from the other and know what kind of video you’re looking at. The more you look around, the more you realize the information available online is focused on practical stuff.

He may not be the best, but Akuma’s vortex (his options after he knocks his opponent down, centered around his demon flip) is a good example of mind games. You can find more info in the Akuma sub-forum. Different characters have different options, obviously.

Dan is the joke character. He’s probably the worst character in the game, but not awful as worst characters go. Street Fighter is full of stereotypes though. Every character is a joke in one way or another.

how to invite friend to fight?

now i added a friend, how do i inivite? can’t see to find that function on the menu?

thanks

Sup people.

Got SFIV CE first day but never really did much other than beat up on my friends. Right now, I’m trying to pick up on more of the technical aspects of the game in the hopes that I can compete some time in the future; and be ready for when my by Dudley drops.

Any College Station players here?

Hey, just wondering…does Daigo ever pick anyone but Ryu?

he generally just picks very solid if straightforward characters, and Ryu fits that bill perfectly in alot of games (especially since he cleans up in 4) i’ve seen Balrog in super turbo, akuma in alpha, ken in third strike, and quite a variety in CvS2

I have my own question. I’ve basically only played charge characters since release, and am wondering who is best to learn joystick-motions with? I’m looking for someone who has to do a little more than just FB/DP, I’ve been playing with Cammy the past week and am getting good with her basic moves and quick regular cannon strike, but am not sure if she’s for me and would like some more variety, suggestions?

Hi, I have a quickie for you guys. I was browsing the wiki to find out hit stun and block stun frame data after jump-ins with sakura, and it looks there is no info on her page. I checked Ryu’s, but nothing. So I think they all have the same kind of data, but I can’t find a page with such info. I’d like to understand if landing after a jump attack has some recovery or if it is clean as landing doing no attack, or trying to figure out how large is the frame-window to connect after a successful jump in.

Example: I was messing with sakura jump-in hp/hk connecting her super, and it works. Doesn’t seem to work with Ultra though. I’d like to understand if I’m too slow (might be) or there simply isn’t enough time

Try either Rog/Blanka/Bison/Chun/Guile – really depends on your playstyle; that should govern your pick - not just joystick motions.

i’ve been maining bison since i got my stick a few days ago and if anyone wants to play casuals feel free to add me with a message saying srk.

arcade stick, pad, and DS3

Hi, I play SF4 on a PS3 and am looking to get an arcade stick in a few months. I have never used an arcade stick so I don’t know how much better/worse I will get.

All I know is I’m having a hard time pulling Sagat’s combo with the DS3 when everyone else say it is supposedly easy.

FYI it’s the HP Tiger Uppercut > FADC > f+HK > Ultra.

Is it just me needing at least 10 hrs of more practice on training mode or can people pull this off using just a DS3? If yes, how efficient?

I would also appreciate some insight into my situation with never using an arcade stick before. Btw, I use the d-pad to perform moves.

Hey guys, with all the great news of the new Street fighter IV characters, help me get the PSP petition going.

I don’t have a lot of time on shoryuken.com, if someone would please make a thread on here with this petition would really be appreciated

Forward to your friends!!!

Thanks,

Send me a message if you were able to help out

just take time. i don’t play sagat often, but the way i learn FADC combos is to take it step by step. first TU>FADC. i keep doing that until i’m comfortable then i’ll add the rest. take it slow at first. the TU>FADC>f+hk>ultra is sort of weird cause if you do it too fast then you’ll dash under. you should be able to do it w/ a DS3.

when going to a stick be prepare to relearn everything.

Quick question, but I’ve been working on doing ultra cancels from standard moves- spiral arrow into spin drive smasher, scissor kick into bison’s ultra, etc. I’m starting to get them down pretty reliably, but I still occasionally screw up.

For Cammy’s in particular, I find that I go into her shoryuken kick attack more often than is probably appropriate, and that if I use a medium kick for each part of the link rather than the light kick, the combo isn’t entirely wasted (ie. spin drive hits the last hit as the guy’s coming back down).

Do you account for fat fingering when you’re working out your combos? Or do you just go with the theory that “I’ll learn faster if I don’t compensate”. In golf, for example, I used to have a terrible slice, so I’d aim slightly to the left. The further I aimed to the left, the worse my slice got, to the point that my worst nightmare wasn’t that the ball would slice but that it’d go straight because that was guaranteed to go into the woods/lake/etc.

Same concept here and teach myself not to fuck up by just… punishing myself with a loss if I do?

Does anyone know how to counter this?

So, the guy had in me a block string, like jab jab jab, and then he jumped and cross up me. Is there a way to counter this? It also happened so fast that I couldn’t react. Even if I saw it coming, I couldn’t do anything beside block, or I’ll get hit.

How about some information, jack? What character are you? What character is your opponent?

Every characters?

I just started playing SF4. Somehow got to g2-D on mashing shoryuken and light srk into Ultra on a pad. This is my first time playing a fighting game, coming from FPS its hard to adjust and I feel there is a boatload of information out there for beginners. I just don’t know where to start! I see video threads, and combo threads, and most people reply just “practice” but I’m looking for someone kind enough to give sort of a roadmap on how to play this game for people who have never played fighting games before! Even the beginners thread is too advanced for me! I printed out some bread and butters and have no idea how to do them…i’m feeling overwhelmed please help!

I want to main ryu. I think I need to take a step back and learn the very basics of the game. And have no idea where to start with all this information! Thanks in advance.
