THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

I’m not sure if this question is really appropriate for a ‘beginners’ thread, but I’ll take a shot:

What is ‘late-teching’ all about? I imagine it’s just what it sounds like – teching late in the throw window – but I don’t know why you do it! I was watching a Sanford vs Mariodood youtube clip, and Chris Hu was talking about late-teching after Dan’s kicks – I assume thats because late-teching allows you to either block the ensuing poke/uppercut, or tech the ensuing throw. So, should you ALWAYS late-tech? Are there situations where you DON’T want to?

Any help on this one?

**I’ m just new here so I have been playing SF IV since a couple of months but not much online matches, hope to change that soon.

I main Rose, then Abel Ryu & Zangief.**

Where can i find the move list from the SE stick?
I have the SF4_hissyo.pdf but it’s in japanese!

So i’m searching for the scan from the movelist from the SE stick.
Thanks

I play boxer or ken. I enjoy the rushdown pace. Boxer isn’t really a problem, because he have lots of moves that can adsorb or dodge the fireball. I usually have problems with Ken, especially against Sagats.

Another question is, is pulling off a meaty on a knockdown character safe?

I’m finally changing to a stick(maybe a little to late).

My main doubts are how to do a ultra? Press the 3 buttons or use a defined button(PPP/KKK)? I’m using the japanese layout.

To do a SRK motion is advised to do it normally or to use shortcuts?
All help is welcome

The answer to both of your question is, “its up to you.”

With Ultra, you can use the single buttons if you want. The reason alot of people don’t do this is because there are only 6 buttons on an arcade cabinet. Likewise, sometimes at tournaments the only stick you’ll be able to borrow is someones six button stick. If you learn to play by pressing three buttons to do ultra, you’ll be able to ultra comfortably on any setup.

As for shortcuts, they’re in the game, so use them if they help you. Keep in mind that this shortcut system isn’t in any other fighting game (that I know of), so if you’re planning on learning how to play Blazblue or ST or WHATEVER, it’d help to know how to do the standard DP motion. Personally I use it situationally – if I’m doing an anti-air DP, I usually do the standard motion. But if i’m doing Giefs “c.Short (x4) xx EX Glove”, I’ll use a shortcut.

Whatever works.

Since this is the beginner thread, i’d figure I’d post this video here, unless otherwise noted to put it somewhere else.

You got somebody spamming Projectiles at you all the time, here is a video that goes through what everybody can do to those spammers:
Awesomeness Surrounds You

Check out my other videos if you are a true beginner. It will help.

Since many will never even see an arcade cabinet in their lifetime, it’s pretty fair to say you can use whatever buttons you want to.

sry, i am from germany, so mabey i didnt get it.

but what are shortcuts?

can i make, that i just hav to push 1 button to do a dragonpunch?

The game has shortcuts for certain motions already built-in. You cannot create your own shortcuts. See the wiki.

Hi guys, my FightPad has finally arrived (the Ken’s one)! :wgrin:
I have used it for about 2-3 days but it seems that I have a small problem with it, since I can’t properly push the BF (back forward) and the UP (up forward) directions consistently.
I often “miss” them and I simply push back or up.
They seem to be much “harder” to push than the old 360 controller.
This is quite a bit problem using characters such as Vega or DeeJay (on HDR).
Is it quite normal and I just need to practice more?
Apart from this it is very comfortable and responsive!

Thanks :lovin:

Trust everyone, it’s a long road to becoming awesome with a stick when you’re not used to the movements. But don’t throw it away after the first day. Most people will tell you they spent weeks or even months to get fully comfortable with the execution on a stick.

And there are probably dozens of threads here about how to use a joystick…go look in character threads

hi guys, I’m having a really hard time with some combos that involve cr LK(LP) -> qcf P (for example Fei Long or Rose). I use a square joystick. Any shorcut here? If not what advice would you give me?

Hi and thanks for your answer.
Actually I am using a FightPad, which is a bit different from a real arcade stick, I think that I just have to practice more :wgrin:

What exactly is your issue? Try going to training mode and turning on the input display. Are you hitting all 3 directions of the qcf? If you consistently are, then it must be a timing issue. Are you pressing cr. lk/lp once, or multiple times? If you’re chaining several cr. lk/lp’s, you won’t be able to cancel into a special move. You have to do a link instead. There’s more to it than that, but I’m not sure if it applies to you. Are you trying to do Rose’s trial mode where she has to do a couple cr. lp’s and then cancel into EX drill or whatever it is?

You’re right about why you would late-tech. It reduces the chance of sticking out a normal if your opponent doesn’t attempt a throw.

Reasons why you wouldn’t want to:

  1. It’s harder to time.
  2. More of your opponents moves can be used to counterhit you.
  3. If your opponent catches on, they can just pause to bait you and then reversal or counterhit you, which is similar to walk back, poke.

Those are the ones off the top of my head.

Thank you.

I am incredibly awful at this game. I do nothing but lose to Ryu and Balrog and Sagat and Ken. Over and over and over. And fuck. Ryu and Balrog and Sagat punch the screen when they win and it makes me dizzy. I switch inputs on my monitor so my head doesn’t hurt after another ass kicking. Ugh.

I hate this game but I can’t stop playing.

Please don’t give up you spent money buying SF4 . Don’t stop playing because training makes perfect . When i first play SF4 what i do with balrog is just punch. Try playing on arcade mode or verus before going online . As for confidence you might want to go to arcades and play . But of course you have to take the embarrassment ! But no matter what do not give up !

Probably an odd question, but does anyone know how much punishment the madcatz TE stick can take in terms of normal use? I find I get way better timing when I really hammer the buttons and JAM the stick into the sides, than when I try to be gentle with it, but I can’t afford to replace the damn thing if I break it. Not talking about deliberately abusing it ofc, but do I need to be deliberately gentle?
