THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

I’ve been playing Street Fighter since it first showed up as SF2 in arcades, but I’m a complete n00b to these forums. Thanks for sticking threads like this. The amount of time it saves and info presented is excellent.

Hi to all here at SRK.
I am a fairly new Streetfighter 4 player but have played SF2 also.
I have chosen my character as RYU as I am most familiar with him from the SF2 days.
I thought I was ok at SF until I got into playing it online and started getting my ass handed to me on a regular basis so I found your site and it has been extremely helpful
I have watched a ton of videos, read a stack of your Ryu threads here and simply can’t believe the depth that SF4 fighting has.
After a load of practice I have managed to get through ALL of Ryu’s trials, including hard which I was quietly pleased with. However one way that I did this was to constantly configure the buttons on my stick to tailor to each combo which I know is not the right thing to do but in all honestly they were driving me nuts.

Anyways I’ll get to the point of my first post. I am looking for a couple of pointers if anyone can help.
First is button configuration the stick.
Currently I have my buttons set up like this (top line left to right first)

lp,mp,hp,focus
lk,mk,hk,throw

I can do ok with this setup but I’d like to know what you guys use as a guidline, or have I got it right and just need to practice more?
Also, do you use the turbo function? I know it’s a noobish thing to do but some combos I just can’t seem to pull off without them. I don’t mean the sort of combos that need multiple button presses like Chun Li’s lightning kick, it’s more of a timing issue with linking moves I think.

Lastly, is there a trick to doing a dash cancel to ultra? I can pull it off about 1/10 times which is nowhere near good enough.
Is the only way FA >> then the 2 QC?
Or is there a more efficient way to pull it off more consistantly?

Sorry for the wall of text… I’m a little eager and learning something new is so much fun!
I also apologise if I don’t use the right terminoligy or the button images that you ppl seem to be using.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

T360UK CHIEF >> you button layout is fine and follows the traditional layout that is used in the arcades for SF4, apart from your focus and throw buttons as the official SF4 cabinets only have the 6 buttons:

LP,MP,HP
LK,MK,HK

you can use the other 2 as shortcuts, although i personally dont as if you ever play in a tournament or in a real arcade they may not be there and youll have to adjust pretty quickly, the same goes for the turbos which i would definately recomend you turn off and just practice, moves that require multiple presses, i.e. chun-lis lightning kicks will come straight out if your tapping the button during a previous animation, do someone like chun li’s trails and that should help.

as far as RYU’s SRK > FADC > ultra goes all i can say is practice makes perfect. i sat in training for almost two hours practicing this, and also other things you can link to it ( you can link an EX huricane kick, EX shoryuken and EX fireball off this, and there may be more, i dont hoestly know, i dont get to play to often)

are you playing with a fight stick or a controller?

Thanks for your response
I am using the Madcatz Standard Fightstick that I have modded with Sanwa parts… that’s how much I want to get better at this.
I opted for an octagonal gate aswell and I am more consistant with QC’s now which is a big help. With the square gate I kept accidently jumping sometimes as I travelled the stick too far up.
If you want to see the stick you can see it here
I don’t have a problem with doing multiple button presses though as you do with Chun Li. It’s more of a timing thing with Ryu’s combos. He is definitely going to be my main.
I watched Mickey’s videos and am trying to get the hang of the BnB combos, but my timing is just off and I can’t do them consistantly but Rome wasn’t built in a day, so my skills are probably going to take aslong to improve.
What I will try to do is just disable the 2 extra buttons in the button config and try to play with the 6 buttons like I should.
Back to the drawing board and time to start climbing that Everest of a learning curve.
It’s just such a pain getting whooped all the time!!! I’m 28 ffs and I feel like a toddler learning to walk.

Hello,

I was looking at the frame data over at eventhubs and I had a few questions about combos:

On what frames can you cancel a normal into a special move? During the active frames? Or during the recovery frames? Or does the answer vary from one move to another?

On what frames is it possible to focus cancel a special?

Incorrect. There is CR.RH (Crouching Roundhouse), CS.RH or CLST.RH (Close Standing Roundhouse), and S.RH (Standing Roundhouse). RH / HK same thing

ClxJames is right.

Dunno where else to ask this, and their website really doesn’t tell you a whole lot from what I can tell.

What exactly IS Empire Arcadia? Is it just one big gaming clan? Is it a home arcade the guys on the east coast go to? Why is it a big deal when someone is part of Empire Arcadia?

Everyone talks about it, but I was getting lunch when the memo went around.

but, but redbull makes my heart skip a beat.

Any videos that are a must watch for a noob?

Wanted to make a new thread

But I needed 50 posts, and this is my first. I have had a PS3 since launch, and pretty much consider myself a hardcore gamer. Im a hardcore KILLZONE 2 fan, and my clan is #11 in the world, feel free to add me. Well i joined here because i play street fighter for fun, and mostly because i need advice.
I originally was going to get this: http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/efp21/home.aspx but then i saw amazon had the TE fighting stick available for full price. Also, the Tekken 6 game, COMES with a fight stick, for 150, so thats a really good deal. I need opinions; I play street fighter for fun, should i shell out 150 for this stick, how good of a stick is it? Or should i just pre order the tekken 6 pack ( game and stick) for 150? Seems like a great deal compared to the rip off thats the TE one. Tekken 6 link: http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/Prod...oduct_id=75142 . It is a hori stick, i hear good things. Im not an expect when it comes to sticks so help me out someone.

If you just play for fun, go for the Tekken bundle.

If you plan to go to tournaments you’ll need to get another stick as all tournaments I know of (most majors + EVO) ban the use of wireless stick and the stick that comes with T6 is wireless.

Was gonna drop this game after not feeling the intricacies and preferring SC4…but after evo, I kinda want to try to learn to play this game.

Now I have tried and tried to learn Sf and I just fail. I mean I suck ass. I’m gonna dive into character threads and look around. But I have no clue wtf has priority over what and mainly I have absolutely no clue how to get combos to work.

Is their a tutorial for combos for bare beginners? I really cant find the frames to link and do cancels. I find myself mashing the crap out of the button or input and hoping they flow to the next. I’d like to be doing this in proper timing, but yeah…i need major help.

does anyone have tips for teching throws. i’ve been playing this game for a while and am no beginner, but sometimes opponents are still able to walk up to me and toss me. i may just have really poor reaction time, but this is definitely something i need to work on. any advice, suggestions, or methods for improving this would be appreciated.

i noticed in the finals that daigo really loves to use c.mk as a poke and combo into hadoken if it hits… i’ve been trying to do this but it seems like a link. or is it possible to hit confirm before trying to hadoken?

He does not Link the Hadoken from [Crouching]Medium Kick.
He is Canceling it.

c.MK xx Hadoken is it.
But I do not understand what you ask?

Just practice to do Hadoken right when you see Medium Kick hits.

Hi

I’m absolutely flabbergasted at my problem. Now, I use a x-arcade modded with IL/Happ (because I’m starting to think the pcb is the culprit, I don’t want to realize how bad I actually am).

Now, for the life of me, I can’t ultra consistently. Pressing three buttons isn’t hard (I can lariat all day if I have to) but when I try to go for ultras, I get supers for a majority of the time. So I went into practice and turned the input option on. When I try to go PPP or KKK, my inputs come out immediately as PP/KK and THEN PPP/KKK. So is there something with the inputs in SF4 that make moves like lariats easy even though I’m pressing the buttons NOT at the same time?
