THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Great thread. Returning casual SFII player here and ive learnt a lot from the FAQ, links and answers.

Finding it very hard to transition from a pad to a stick like some of the others here so practice time.

Noob question:

Where can I read up on the New York Competition scene? I want to start going to Tournaments and such.

Is the Prima guide any good? I’m thinking about getting it.

-10 is a frame DISadvantage, not advantage(that would be read as +10). If you hit someone with a close hp and don’t cancel it into a super/special, they will recover before you do and will have 10 frames available to punish you if they’re close enough.

it depends on the link, some are easier than others.

go to the discussion and matchmaking subforums at the bottom of the main forum page and click on “atlantic north.” NYC’s Chinatown Fair arcade is the number one spot as far as i know.

i dont think there is anything thats in the prima guide that cant be found on srk

Thanks for putting this together. It’s been a great help. I’ve found myself referencing the stickies a couple of times as I attempt to transition from casual to serious player.

Anyone know how to get gold usertitles and character specific icons?

Okay, I’ve read through this entire thread and I’ve got some more questions:

  1. when doing a cross-up, when do you push the punch/kick button? Do you have to wait until you’re behind the opponent, or can you push it earlier, and if the arc is correct, it won’t hit until you’re behind the opponent?

  2. I’ve found the only way I can consistently perform special moves is if I hit the punch/kick button slightly after the last direction motion. So for example a fireball I do (D, DF, F, P) instead of (D, DF, F+P). Are you supposed to be able to hit the punch/kick button at the same time as the last direction button press?

  3. Someone was talking about charge storing/partitioning and how it’s not in SF4? What is that exactly, and why does it matter that you can’t do it in SF4?

I cannot get super or ultra combos on a stick. What am I doing wrong?

Played a bit more (second time ever!) and have one more noob question:

How do I combo a charge attack after a crossup?

For instance, I was going after Bison’s crossup jumping Forward, low Forward and then wanted a scissors kick to come out but got confused over the motion.

I was wondering what the SF4 1.01 download did and I read, this from another poster, “When it was done installing the Update, I started SFIV and when I got into the Main Menu; it said that I unlocked an Akuma and Dan T-Shirt for Home.”, however I didn’t receive any such message and saw no perceptible changes, so how do I find those unlockables?

not sure but i think its in the challenge trial modes (combos).

  1. it depends on the crossup, usually its right as youre passing over their head.
  2. whatever works for you. definitely error towards the later button press
  3. charge partitioning is a 3s thing where you could like charge for a bit, do some other stuff like dash fwd, and then do a charge move without having to charge up the move again. theres a video a few pages back on it that i posted. as far as how much it matter that its not there, thats really speculative aka i dont know. you can still do lots of stuff with charge characters without partitioning

this is hard without a video or a commands list. i cant really help you unless i see something.

its basically impossible to do crossup, normal xx charge move in any street fighter because you dont have enough charge built up. try doing a different combo that has a few more normals to give you more time to charge up:

j.mk, c.lp, s.lp, c.mk xx scissors
j.mk, c.lp, c.lp, s.lk xx scissors

What exactly is defined as a “Technical” move?

Technical in game, or in our normal terminology here on SRK?

In-game, when you get the “Technical” message pop-up underneath your characters HP gauge.

Erm, lukemanity I believe what you are refering to is the bonus message you get when you perform a quick recovery with your character after a knockdown?

^i think it also shows up when you tech a throw

When you win a round, sometimes a “C” shows up instead of a “V”. What does the C mean?

It means you won via chip damage.

Hi guys, been lurking for a month, but haven’t really posted much.

Anyways, this and HDR are my first SF games. I really plan on getting good and will study a lot after midterms (this Friday!).

I’ve unlocked most characters in SFIV (except Gouken and Seth). I plan to play a lot as Dan, Abel, and Akuma. I’m thinking about the style of play I want to use, and it seems like rushing and heavy offense suit me the most. Which characters have a good rushing game?

Thanks!
