THE SF4 BEGINNERS Thread! NEW? POST HERE FIRST!

Same way I do decently in G1 despite not knowing some of Rufus’ main combos… Theory. Go to a matchup thread and find the counters and punishes for certain attacks. For instance, you just blocked a regular Blankaball. How can you punish it? What about rainbow ball? Slide? I know spamming attacks up close isn’t going to work if you’re using Dhalsim. His general plan, as far as I know, is to GTFO.

Some characters have frametraps and blockstrings that leave certain characters almost without anything to do. I have no idea if Blanka has any of those, but few of his attacks are safe on block. Once you KNOW what to do against certain attacks, it becomes easier to counter them. Plus, try to read up on which moves leave enough room that you can teleport out.

I got my first Ranked Match win today after 57 played matches. I insist playing Dhalsim even though I find it easier to play with Ken/Ryu in SFIV. I am happy to say that my first win came against the kind of player you all seem to hate: The kind that is waiting forever to choose his character and then pick Ryu in the last second (why do they do that?). I think it was much easier to dominate with Dhalsim in SFII. Mostly because my old strategy was a yoga mummy -> headbutt combo that doesn’t work very well in SFIV. Also I find the timing harder in sliding under those fireballs now. I have still to learn how to counter and use EX and Focus attacks.

Anyway, I saw some statistics earlier where people posted which characters they had played online. I cannot find these statistics in Xbox360. Is it only a PC thing or is it possible to see these kind of stats on Xbox as well?

I’m a long-time Street Fighter player, but been out of the tourney scene for 10+ years now.
My newb question is along the lines of the tournament events rather than the game.

Could someone please link me to or post the rule sets used in tournaments (big events like EVO)? I’m hosting a small event in my town and I’d like to know what the most acceptable standards are to Street Fighter 4 rules.
Thanks.

its too much to copy and paste. Its basically, show up on time, play the best out of 3 rounds and a 99 timer with a double sided bracket ( Winners/ Losers)

I’m tired of trying to find out how to hide my character on select screen. I would greatly appreciate any help.

Player vs Player = You can’t
Rank= You can’t
Championship mode= Its hidden
you could wait it out or hover over a near by person or just pick it. Like it matters anyways.

Just got my TE stick in today. Doing Balrog normal trials. Can’t seem to pull off the dash low straight (charge back, down+forward punch). Is there a short cut input for this? Or am I doomed to keep practicing on this one move for the next 10 hours?

Have you been using pad previously? If so, then all you can do is practice. I know it’s not fun. I used pad till Christmas when I finally got my stick, but if you keep practicing then you will get ahold of it, and it will pay off.

Yeah, pad user for a while. Last time I owned an arcade stick was on the Dreamcast. I did finally get that move down, Guess I got some heavy fingers cause I was holding the button down making it do a different move I think. Now still trying to finish the balrog normal trials. The timing is just so odd though.

Why people call the game vanilla sf4? what does that mean?

Just wait till after you’ve played on stick so long that it becomes awkward to play on pad.

@Alteisen

When people say vanilla they’re referring to the regular SF4.

thanks SodaPOP

Not a problem.

Hey I know this is a Super Street Fighter question, but there is no thread like this in the Super Street Fighter forum to just post a quick question.
But basically is there a list of all the changes for the characters from Street Fighter IV to Super Street Fighter IV?

Thanks

So . . . does this silence mean there isn’t one or does it just mean STFU and GTFO? :stuck_out_tongue:

first of all thanks for the post it well to be honest when i play i used the three buttons very quickley. For cheap Zhu Zhu pets please see the zhu zhu pets hamster* site where you can buy Zhu Zhu hamsters at low prices.

it’s driving me crazy, I have been playing the SF-series from SF2 in the arcades, back in 1994, and was pretty good in combo’s (at that time), but I just can’t connect the easiest combo’s in (S)SFIV. I CAN do f.e. with blanka a cr.MK into vertical roll. But I can’t manage to do a simple cr.LP > cr.MP with Guy. It’s always been blocked or the cr.MP doesn’t come out…

But I don’t encounter any problems with a target combo like st.LP > st.MP > st.HP > st.HK with Guy…

It’s really annoying, when I practice in training mode, sometimes it connects, sometimes it doesn’t. I can’t get a real good timing in connecting both punches. I feel so dumb.

I’ve been looking for change logs as well. I think many people are. Unfortunately there isn’t yet a comprehensive list of changes for all the old characters yet. Check each character specific subforums to get a general feel for what are some significant changes.

Only character with a full change log that I know of is Yeb’s comprehensive change log for Gen.

Target combos are performed by pressing the next buttons in rapid succession without regards to timing (i.e. canceling each normal into each other).

I’m no Guy player, but I assume that cr. LP, cr. MP is a “link.” This means that cr. MP does not cancel a cr. LP’s ending animation (or recovery frame), therefore you cannot input cr. MP immediately after cr. LP, like you would with target combos.

You must input it with appropriate pause in between, so that cr. LP finishes the animation and then cr. MP starts.

Easier answer is to use “plinking.” Plinking makes timing your links easier by pressing a button you want to have come out first, and then immediately following with a button that is one “strength level” below it. So if you are plinking HP, you would press HP, then immediately MP. If you are plinking MK, you would press MK, then immediately LK.

So Guy’s link becomes: hold :d: + :lp: slight pause :mp::lp: The :mp::lp: is pressed almost simultaneously, with :mp: being pressed first. Imagine a person sitting by a desk paino’ing or rolling his fingers on a table with his other hand on his chin, in such way that commonly expresses boredom. That would be about the speed of button press.

You would have to practice and figure out the timing of the link yourself. If the cr. MP doesn’t come out, then allow more pause in between LP and MP. If the cr. MP is blocked, then allow less pause in between.

There is a sticky for “plinking” so check it out for more detailed information.

I’ve been voraciously reading up on many great articles by Maj., after finding out that I’m a scrub (a newbie who thinks he’s not a newbie). I realized that while having intermediate technical knowledge of the game, I grossly lack fundamentals (like zoning, spacing, footsies, momentum, pacing).

After reading about Maj’s article on “Proper Turtling Philosophy,” I wanted to learn more about how to effectively play defensively.

I like offensive playstyles of many pros. Really, who doesn’t. It’s very exciting to watch, and often jaw-dropping.

But I think defensive playstyle may suit be better as I attempt to build fundamentals.

Where can I read more on turtling or defensive play? Specifically on HOW does one properly play defensively?

Where can I find a list of all of the new characters EX move properties? I’m specifically looking for Cody. Thanks
