Range/hitbox discrepancies as well as general distaste for them. It wouldn’t be much of a problem of Scherazade and Shura would be the same as their clone but they remove the one weakness of their respective characters so it’d make playing that character absolutely pointless.
Is there a reason Yunsung never gets any respect in any SC games that people actually play?
I thought he had promise in SC3…but, that game has been shunned.
I played him briefly in SC4 on my friends PS3…and I had a hard time finding useful low attacks. I need those to live.
Plus, he lost DF+K which was cruel.
Is this going to be another upstream SC2 battle? Don’t get me wrong, I’m playing Yunsung regardless…just want to know how much patience I’m going to need…
Ahhhhh, fresh thread.
Any other Maxi players in here? He’s still the most interesting character to me, even if this is a pretty weak showing for him.
I don’t think so. He has the 2nd best CF game behind Mina, CR is really good (he has something for every situation- it reminds me of Sarah’s FL stance in VF). He just is a high-risk/high-reward char. CF makes the game a lot more aggressive then earlier SC’s I think, either that or since I play Yun/Mina it means people don’t sit and block on you.
Yun’s 3K is good, it can transition into crane, and on hit it sets up a easy nitaku, plus it’s quick.

SOOOOOOOO HHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRD
Nah, I have to say Voldo’s definitely got the best soul gauge game. Lizardman’s up there too. Yun is one of the characters I know practically nothing about, so unfortunately I can’t add anything here.
To make up for that a bit, here’s some more Rock stuff worth mentioning…
First off, I realized I didn’t go into detail on the JF command grab in my last post. For those who don’t know, you perform the grab then hold B to charge up your swing; pay close attention to the opponent’s falling arc, and release B as they’re just about to hit the ground. Like I said before, this is rather easy with practice IMO. This grab does 50 points of damage and causes a ground stun animation which gives you some nice options:
- Combo 6B+K for 22 more points of damage, or 26 if they try to tech. No wakeup game from this, but it’s still a 72-point throw.
OR
- Dash up to the opponent then either ground grab or crouch throw. Yep, same mixup I kept harping on before, can get 80-120 damage total if you guess right.
So, to move on to a different topic, his pokes are good and should be a bigger part of your gameplan than my first post suggested, and he actually has somewhat of a soul gauge game. A couple of the moves I mentioned before, 22B and 66B, are also among his most damaging moves to the gauge, and he has other ranged pokes that can contribute to a soul crush: A+B, 1A, and B are among the good safe ones. 66AB would also be really good (especially since it combos on normal hit and stuns on CH), but it’s -15 so I’m not sure how punishable it would be at max range. PT and bullrush eat 1/14 of the gauge as well, and those add up over time.
One particular situation where it’s best to go for a little bit of gauge damage is after landing A+G. The opponent can tech immediately after this throw, and they’re out of range for your wakeup games & tech traps, so just force them to block a 1A or 22B.
I wouldn’t expect to land a ton of critical finishes with Rock, but I do think it is realistic to at least reduce your opponent’s gauge enough that he starts getting jittery. That’s a major victory in and of itself.
Finally, if anyone is interested in actual good Rock matches, top Hong Kong player LAU has some fights with him on Youtube. Here’s the list:
http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=lks9413+rock&search_sort=video_date_uploaded
Also, if you’re interested in SC4 at all, you should subscribe to this guy, as the Hong Kong scene is one of the strongest I’ve seen and they upload tons of new matches. Almost every character gets some play, as well.
Enjoy,
Josh.
Yeah that’s true. But a character like Ashlotte, hasn’t she got less range than Asta?
I’m pretty sure the real reason is that the SC considers these characters useless and DO NOT WANT, so ban. In the case of Stupid Elf and Shura, the fact that the chars are superior in every way gives them a convenient excuse.
In Algol’s case, it’s due to a combination of that and belief he’s overpowered.
It’s a different banning philosophy then what SRK does, but it’s still consistent, and I respect it. It’s not like they restrict how you play the game, just char selection (outside of pre-patch where they banned Ivy’s infinite- which was reasonable)
Yun’s and Mina’s soul gauge games are better then Voldo/Lizardman’s, I’m sure of it. With Mina, that’s how you’re supposed to use her- go for the CF to set up the rest of your game. If you don’t play her that way, she’s bottom tier. She’s pretty much a gimmick character in SC4.
I’ve been playing Algol religiously lately, and I hardly think he’s overpowered. He doesn’t have anything extremely outstanding. It’s hard to think what the SCIV Community sees as too good for the game.
I do think it’s mostly due to him being a boss and “different”. Since there is no arcade to base things off of, more widespread bans aren’t the end of the world. As I posted above, there’s a logic to SCIV’s ban list, so I can respect it, even if it isn’t something another community would do.
After SCIII, I don’t blame the SC community for having an itchy finger on the banhammer.
wow, inflicting instant death is a pretty good gimmick to have
I think people are most afraid of his 59,824,621,000 bubble combos that take 80% of your health and are completely inescapable if you get hit by one launcher.
He doesn’t really any practical ones anymore. The bubbles hit differently now and they don’t allow for big combos.
IIRC those combos were post patching. Algol is just a beast.
Easier said then done. This isn’t Hokuto.
Ok, this is not a complaint about scrubs online, nor about the lag and shit. I finally came to realize that I should just play Ranked more often. My complaint was always the wait, and Ranked matches are fast, and if I lose, I don’t have to wait for 2 other players to play. Or get kicked by host.
It’s like I just discovered sliced bread… A few months late.
the thing i didnt like about ranked was that i got more 3 bar matches in ranked than in player, and if i hosted then the rate of games/min was about the same
you must have had some wack-ass sandwiches as a kid
So is there gonna be a patch that is tourney standard? Or are people just going to use the latest patch to play SCIV?
Latest patch, for sure. You’re not allowed to play online unless you’re up to date.
And arstal, here is Voldo’s soul gauge data for 1.03. I don’t think anyone else in the game matches this.
In particular, 3BB is just insane. This move is already a great whiff punisher that does a lot of damage and is completely safe. And if the opponent starts to GI the 2nd hit, you can stop at 3B and punish them if they try it. Solo 3B takes away 1/10 of the gauge, as well!
I had already figured this stuff just from watching & playing in tournaments, but it’s nice to have the data to back that up.
I havent played a SC game since calibur 2 nor entered any tournies for any SC game but this looks dope.
