I have that stick to and don’t worry, you’re fine. It feels like the ball will roll off but it won’t. It’s impossible to unscrew it from the top. You have to get a screwdriver and take it off from the bottom. Look at this picture. On the bottom you can see the place where the screwdriver goes. What you’re turning is a combination of the ball and stick shaft. Don’t confuse the stick shaft with the shaft cover, though. The shaft cover shouldn’t be an issue since you probably won’t hold it. The actual stick shaft (silver part underneath) also won’t screw off or mess up motions even if it spins. This is how most sticks work but you can just feel it more with Japanese sticks. You just have to get used to it.

If your stick doesn’t fit the description that I just outlined then it’s possible you actually might have a problem. If the stick spins when you don’t want it to or aren’t even trying then it sounds suspicious. The shaft cover spinning is certainly not an issue. But holding the stick firmly and moving it shouldn’t give you any spinning.

May someone please explain the differences between the various Seimitsu joysticks? Specifically the LS-40, LS-56, and LS-32 models.

I don`t think Seimitsujoysticks are so good for fighting. The LS-32 is the standard joystick in shootercabinets like Sega Astro City, Egret 1 and Taito but it has a rather short lever. LS-40 is about the same as LS-32, only difference is that it has a lever protection (it is used alot in SNK cabinets).
The LS-55 plays like the LS-32 and has the same length on the lever as a sanwa jlf-tp-8y (45mm, the LS-32 is 42mm). If you are gonna make a customstick or mod a HRAP then this is good I think.
Also, if you decide o buy a seimitsujoystick then try to look after the ending -01 in the modelnumber. -01 is telling you that a JLF-H (same as the 5-pin cable on the sanwa jlf-tp-8y) is used. And it does not show on the websight but they have a LS-32-01 also (if you want the LS-32).

Is there any difference between the Sanwa JLW-TM and -UM sticks other than that one comes with a bat and the other with a ball?

JLW-UM-8 has a thicker shaft and it can only hold 45mm balltops and battops, it can not hold 30mm and 35mm balltops.
JLW-TM-8 can use any (with adapter).

for seimitsu buttons can you substitute an american bit for drilling the holes rather than having to buy a 30 mm forstner bit online.

The main difference is that the LS-32-01 has the microswitches attached to a PCB with a 5-pin output similar to the JLF series. The 5-pin cable (H5 pin) is included with the LS-32-01. The LS-32 does not have a PCB and you wire the live and the ground directly to the tabbed microswitches.

The secondary difference is that the LS-32-01 has an s-shaped mounting plate. LS-32 has a flat mounting plate.

On a side note, LS-32-01 PCBs are printed with LS-32-02 even though LS-32-02 does not exist in the catalog. TheRealNeoGeo explained to me that he believes this was due to a mistake by Seimitsu. Probably when they had to make a new PCB after problems with the original PCB. Thanks Per!

Circlip pliers, pretty common tool for mechanical applications:

Discovered through the new HRAP2SA: as per this observation (bad pun intended), it appears that Sanwa OBSF-24 K/DH now exists! (24mm snap-in buttons in the composite color black/grey)

My search function is busted. Can anyone tell me if a 1-3/16th inch hole saw is good for Japanese 30cm buttons?
