The Sandman thread

Yes this about the Sandman not the Spidey villain but of Dream of the Endless. I just read through the first five trades and man what an experience so far. Yeah I’m late but wow I’m just enjoy this got the other trades to read now. So I was wondering what was others favorite stories or arcs? Favorite Endless?

Discuss.

Oh and Death, I’d hit it.

My favorite story arc is Brief Lives. The whole series was epic to me but that arc in particular really hit my metaphorical and masculine g-spot. Sandman had a ton of top tier artists but Jill Thompson’s probably one of my personal favorites. And Thompson’s two Death manga kick all sorts of ridiculous ass, as did her The Little Endless Storybook one-shot. Those three Thompson stories are probably the best of the Sandman-related spinoffs (not written by Gaiman) out there.

Another one of the best spinoffs is The Dead Boy Detectives by the Bru and Bryan Talbot. I think I saw in a recent solicitations that Vertigo is finally going to make a TPB of it.

Oh yeah, and Gaiman’s two Death miniseries were excellent as well.

Man, if I had extra cash I would totally spring for those Absolute Sandmans.

My favorite Endless is either Delirium or Death. Probably not surprising because they have big roles in the Thompson stories. I always felt kind of sorry for Despair, though. Everytime I see a picture of that frumpy, grumpy looking porkchop, I just wanna give her a fat hug.

The Bru and Sandman world sounds like instant win to me.

Yeah the 2 Death minis were great. I loved the art in The Dream Hunters(the monk and fox story)

Yet right now my fav is the stories in Dream Country especially the Element Girl story.

Death is my fav with Destruction second.

You’re never too late to start reading Sandman.
“The Wake”, and “A Game of You” are highly recommended.

If you can pick up the Sandman Companion, that’s also a great read. It tells of the creation of the characters and what drove every story.

Death: The High Cost of Living mini was the better of the two minis, imo.
Time of Your Life was very good too, but in a different way.
Read the first mini before the second, though.

The Dreaming series was also fairly good. It tended to drag early on, but around issue 32 or so it really picks up. (The Language of Flowers, I think it’s called. Gaiman has a foreword that tells you it’s a jumping on point anyways.)
It gets a steady writer, and artist team going.
It deals with the supporting characters more than anything else(Lucian, Mathew, Merv etc), but Dream is still involved here and there.

Also, the first Books of Magic trade by Gaiman is also very good. Death appears later in the series for 1 or 2 issues (in the teens), so you may want to look into that as well.

sandman was my first foray into non-mainstream comics, and i haven’t been able to rightly stomach mainstream shit since. it’s been a while since i’ve completely reread the series, but i remember taking a particular liking to Seasons of Mist and Kindly Ones. one of the best things about sandman for me was how gaiman incorporated all kinds of different deities and characters from different mythologies under one umbrella. the Lucifer series that spun off the character from sandman was also very, very enjoyable and engaging.

That is a good point. I forget that Lucifer is a spinoff of Sandman. What I’ve read of Lucifer so far has been great - gotta make a mental note to read more.

Anyone checked out Absolute Sandman volumes? A lot of it looks gorgeous however there were some recolouring things that I didn’t like because I was so gosh darned used to the colours in the originals. Like the one for John Dee from the first volume, it looked far more creepier however in the absolute one, his colour is all flat now. I mean there are some things that are done well but other things that are not. Also I picked up the Neil Gaiman reader which is pretty good for insight on Gaiman’s works by other people. A bit pretentious but what critique of any work isn’t?

Just started reading this last week! I’m at the section where Delirium and Dream and searching for Delight in the real world… this shit is just way too good.
