The Ryu Matchup Thread - Good Ol' Fundamentals

Amm… 3 frame jab, invincible reversal, good oki off tatsus, 1000 health and stun, good walk speed, and GODLIKE damage. Weak you say?

Great ways to use meter, easily confirmable super, good fireball, guard break setups, jab and invincible dp for AA, rewarding vskill…

Ryu is even with everyone and I think he beats Laura… she cant shoot any fb from upclose or she eats sweep… just dont shoot fireballs from far… dont jump at her and bully her with up close fb

So far with the amount time i’ve been playing, i think i have a grasp to make my own ryu matchup chart.

6-4 ryu’s favor
Zangief
Dictator
Laura
Juri
Fang
Ibuki

5.5-4.5
R.mika
Claw
sim

5-5
Birdie
Alex
Rashid
Ken
Cammy
Karin
Guile

4.5-5.5
Necalli
Boxer
Nash

4-6
Chun

There’s some matchups still not too sure yet but its a general idea what i think it is imo.

Nice list, nothing I really disagree with there apart from a couple half points. I think Boxer is probably straight even and R Mika I think we probably win 6-4.

Probably wouldn’t be far off my list. Although I still have personal trouble against really good Nash players so he always appears on my 4-6 section.

ryu has to block a lot more than most characters in this game because of how his kit is designed, but he also gets big damage when he picks his spots carefully, which is what makes ryu so good.

if youre getting bodied in certain matchups, chances are you arent blocking enough and trying to contest neutral too much.

I was about to put boxer on 5-5, i change my mind cause infiltration, tokido, alucard and rog seems they think rog beats ryu 6-4. I have to see why though. R.mika and laura i feel like they about the same in terms 1 miss DP or mixups can cause you the Round but since laura is bit easier to keep her out and also i feel r.mika anti projectile and neutral its bit better than laura’s. It makes sense to me R.mika matchup bit tougher than laura which why its 5.5-4.5 for me.

I kinda understand nash he’s like built to beat ryu. But i glad you like the list.

Urien has to be one of the least fun characters to fight against currently.
So many noob 50/50, and can’t even frametrap him properly, you spent most of the time baiting his reversal, very odd hitbox as well.

At least i found st.hk to be quite useful as a counterpoke if they are poking with normals

I think Ryu prob beats him. You don’t need to bait the reversal you can pressure it for free. So on a KD meaty cr.lk OS block pressure him for free because Ryu will recover in time to block the EX head butt, which is full CC punish.

The match for me is like Ibuki, he only really gets super dangerous with V trigg.

Just block a lot then take your chances, he’s susceptible to jump ins, and our plasma is much better than his.

Tbh, Ryu causes Nash a fair amount of problems simply because of his damage output and Nash’s inferior health. Learn to parry his Moonsaults (although good players hardly do them) for a big punish; don’t just dp it. Also since he cannot trade footsies with Nash, he has to choose his spots very carefully, and as was mentioned before, he has to spend alot of time blocking. But playing patiently and landing one jump in or punish hurts Nash really badly, and it also leads to a knockdown which is Nash’s worst nightmare. Make sure to establish that you are willing to go for throws, and then mix it up with crush counters and your 3 frame jabs.

Still though, Ryu has to put in work against him to win.

anyone have a good tip on how to walk forward and cancel c.mk into FB without getting the shoryuken? Seems I have to pause for a split second before doing the c.mk and that’s difficult to do during a match consistently

Nevermin, shoulda caught up with the Q&A thread first, my problem is inputting it too fast

Its actually better to walk forward then back a touch anyway, like my usual fireball pattern is done stationary, I don’t really walk forward, I just batter them with plasma from where i’m standing at about the range of their pokes.

The if I do use cr.mk it’s usually more like - walk forward - the hold back for a split second - then half circle forward mk xx fireball.

That way it works as a whiff/punish bait with that little backwards movement. It’s almost invisible, very slight.

parry on the chain + dash and punish, so clever, lol

that was pretty cool.

Can anyone please explain to me what the fuck tokido was doing around the 0:30 mark? Right after sweeping birdies shoulder tackle, Tokido goes in for a cr.lk straight into a parry. Was he doing the jabjab parry thing where he hides the parry input behind the 2nd chained jab? Why would he do this, I thought that was only for V reversals and both players had no meter.

*Edit: Nvm, I just realized Birdies TAP uppercut is 15f startup. I guess the jabjab parry thing works in this situation because the cr.lk recovers before the 15f uppercut. Even though a meaty cr.lk should technically stuff the not-invincible uppercut, it may be difficult to meaty and that was his backup plan incase cr.lk doesnt make contact?

Tokido channeled his inner 3rd Strike.

OS to parry v-reversal, if the other player jumps it triggers the parry animation i guess

it must be tiresome playing like that…

I think it’s probably just a habit he has against characters with a slow reversal, since really there’s no difference ( and probably safer) if he just meaty cr.lk OS blocked the reversal. Unless he’s looking for a more damaging punish from the parry.

I’ve seen him use this against Uriens headbutt, but again there’s not point since headbutt is full CC combo on block and can be meatied with cr.lk.

In this video it’s stated that it’s not os to parry v-reversal, but to cover 2 options: jump-tech os and wakeup buttons. He says that if delayed correctly cr.LK should hit on jump startup frames and if opponent wakes up with buttons - parry comes out. I personally can’t judge applicability of this, since i am a noob and only start to grasp how os works. But it’s interesting to know your opinions.

Lost 2-1 in Ranked to a 19k Laura player.
I was playing really good and lost due to stupid mixups that took 2/3 of my life (it was really close).
Is there a video that would help me learn how to block these?
