Hmmm I actually think the Fei and Rufus match up is 6/4 in Fei’s favor…well maybe 5.5/4.5. I think Fei can safe poke with rekkas, and CW pressure all day and then wait back for Rufus to come in. Bait and punish EX messiahs and using U2 also makes them think twice about spamming it. Once they get scared about using EX messiah, Fei can start using Tenshin and do good damage. Would like to get some matches with you Maple Maniac if you don’t mind…it seems you know the Fei matchup really well. I have only fought a few good Rufus players so I’d like to get more matchup experience.
Sure! just add me whenever and invite me whenever! I’ll do my best to play against Fei. I practice against my friend CJ Truth for the Fei practice… I’ll agree I believe the Rufus Fei is in Fei’s favor
I need some advice on my knockdown game. I’m having issues keeping up the pressure without eating a dp. I’m not playing dp mashers at all but it seems like almost any time I’m in I eat a counterattack that beats my dive kick. I’m assuming there’s some sort of spacing/timing issue and that it is possible to correctly keep up this pressure, right? The way it’s looking to me now it feels like I need to condition my opponents by baiting a counter then punishing (coming in after I get an untechable then backing outbefore they get up) but I feel like there’s gotta be a better way than doing that constantly. Any suggestions? Other than still ironing out execution shit this is easily the weakest part of my game.
What do you generally go for, or what setups do you use after what knockdowns? Have you tried doing safejumps instead of divekicks so you have more frame advantage to start pressure on their wakeup? If you download the hitbox videos, look at the first vulnerable frame of the DP you’re losing to, and identify what angle divekick you need to do meaty on their wakeup to prevent your divekick from being beaten. Generally though this won’t give you much frame advantage though. Don’t forget, also, that your only method for wakeup pressure doesn’t involve making them block a divekick, mix up things like empty divekicking in front of them outside throw range, waiting for them to take a risk to get out of that spot and punishing, or anticipating their block and doing a walk forward throw which gives you the best mixup options available for Rufus.
If DPs are a problem, it sounds like the opponent doesn’t have enough a reason to stop doing them. Make sure mp/hp DPs are punished either by st.hp, Tornado or cr.hp (or even target combo/far st.hk). lp DPs can be punished by cr.lp, lp Tornado/EX Tornado.
Thanks for the advice guys. I’ve been trying to mix it up a bit on my knockdown. I haven’t had time yet to learn the timing/spacing for anything meaty at all with Rufus (I’m still mostly a beginner) but it’s high on my to do list. At first I was mostly just mashing dive kick and eating DPs left and right. I started mixing it up (in theory) by dashing in and block dp then punish or throw if they don’t dp. I say in theory because I planned this out but nerves come in during matches especially playing at the arcade and I’d just completely forget to. This Chun player last night just had my number though, every time I’d dive kick he’d hit that EX spin kick thing and when I’d try to bait it he’d throw and I’d miss the tech. I’m going to try out the dive kicking outside of their throw range and punish their attempts to get out as well as increasing my repertoire of things I can do when I’m trying to keep in on them after a knockdown.
My game needs a lot of work for sure. I’m enjoying Rufus but there’s a lot that isn’t really “clicking” with me so I’m hoping that starts to come together. This and just applying pressure in general are my weaker points so I have quite a way to go.
Hey guys, found out today that Abel’s Ultra 2 beats out Messiah’s forward and roundhouse follow up!, it even tags us when we flip kick fadc backdash… it seems like a huge risk with or without meter.
On top of that, it can still punish cr. hp just like his ultra 1…
Abel players typically use ultra 1 against us, but i’m curious if that’s his best option! with the functions that i’ve just described, why do you guys think breathless isn’t a good ultra for abel against us.
It feels like a really big gamble that’s not in my favor.
The abel I play doesn’t mash it out after every Ex messiah he blocks. Like i said before, If try and FADC back dash, it can tag me out. If i do it and don’t do any follow up, he can still punish.
Delayed follow up works, but this abel delays his ultra as well.
If he were to mash right after messiah, the ultra would scream itself out and regardless of what kick follow up i was hitting, the ultra flash would give me enough time to switch it to light kick. Since he delays it as well, this doesn’t happen.
Ultra 1 is probably still better since it makes his mixup so much more dangerous, rather than eliminating Rufus’ big defensive option, it’s kinda like the U1 vs U2 argument for Rufus against, say, Ryu. U2 punish isnt guaranteed on EX Messiah anyway, it just changes the rock/paper/scissors breakdown after it’s blocked, reaction LK beats immediate U2, doing nothing beats/doesn’t lose to delayed U2.
EX Messiah is already so baitable anyway, and there are pretty much universal punish/not lose options, like delayed focus crumpling MK/HK, but losing to delayed LK and not winning vs. doing nothing. This all without getting into character specific punishes like Rufus doing a reversal close fierce into LK messiah (one of the only times you’ll see LK messiah combo’d into is when the close fierce counterhits the MK followup, or it whiffs and gives you free meter as they recover out of the air after being hit out of HK followup) in the Rufus mirror, some characters having guaranteed EX SRK punishes on a blocked messiah, etc. In other words, if they block your messiah, you already dun goofed. Abel doesn’t need U2 to gain a punish on EX Messiah FADC backward since he already wins by you burning 3 bars. Guile can flashkick for free against EX Messiah FADC backward, and some characters can super it, too, fyi.
I feel like the Twins will be in Rufus’s favor… Just because of insta Dk’s and his AA’s can own their divekicks. Just my opinion though.
Either way I’ve given Rufus Up as of AE… Going to the twins since I always loved them :/. I will still try Rufus in there, but all he gets is nerfs… nerfs… nerfs… oh and what eelse!? NERFS
Closer to the ground yes. Either that or Just make your divekicks widers. Just gotta make her guess wrong with the timing, thats the best part about Rufus’s divekick!
