The Role of Girls and Women in the FGC

…there are women who play SF4 out there…they just do not belong to any online forum and choose not to…they wont really dedicate themselves to it unless we as guys introduce them to new levels of competetion…I know a really good Sakura player but I doubt she would join anything…

I think the fairest way to approach that suggestion is to just give discounts to anyone who enters more than 1 tournament, so it applies to girls who enter the girls tournament, and the main SF4, but it doesn’t discriminate.

Yeah, pretty much. I see what you’re trying to do there, but I’m not going to argue semantics of invite vs open. To me, they’re both fun side tourneys…err exhibitions.

PS: I will, without shame, join the Senior Citizen SF7 side tournament when that day comes.

(evil laughs)

The MAIN point in this thread has already been decided and WILL happen at EVO this year. (evil laughs)

I think this SSF4 Women’s tourney is an awesome idea. It’s bold, gutsy, progressive, and beneficial to everyone.

Anything that encourages more people to get into fighting games is fantastic. And, if it will help earn female gamers (or women in general) some respect to boot, then that’s another bonus. But, baby steps…baby steps…

Kudos to the EVO crew.

I’m definitely against these all ladies tourneys when they interfere with other tourneys at the same venue. Just throw them in with the men to add to the pot. Equality is reached and everyone is happy.

My bad if they’re all too busy playing Blazblue/MBAA. Except for Lobelia- who’s too busy with Tekken 6 and baby punching.

But seriously? With the sheer amount of SF4 players I’m sure someone around here has a pair of boobs.

So in a nutshell, most male members of SRK are against the idea of an all female tournament, most female members of SRK are also against the idea, but the organizers of EVO are too stubborn to admit that they came up with a poor idea and now are refusing to cancel the event. Did I miss anything?

But will this earn us some new female players? Will they get any respect by competing in their own little tourney?
It might even have the reverse effect in both cases, in a worst case scenario.

I’d very much respect a girl that can make it in the real tournament though, that’s for sure. Hell, any girl that even enters the main tourney I will already respect more as a fighting game player than myself

I don’t even play Tekken anymore, hon. I’m busy with Mass Effect 2 and being an indecisive whore.

That’s a negative.

If the eye-candy argument is invalid, why isn’t there a seniors only tournament? Or maybe a kids tourney? It’s not like there are a ton of kids or older people entering evo.

As others have mentioned, should a transsexual person have to label themself as a women or a man to be able to enter evo?

Also, my girlfriend had a good showing in a couple games at Midwest Championships (EVO North) 2009. She ended up getting 4th place in Puzzle Fighter (losing only to Keits and myself in the tournament). It’s not like she was unable to compete against the men that were playing just because she’s a different gender.

sounds like it.

the fact it’s gone this far is still amazing to me.

Well, let it happen I guess, who knows it might be a great success and all our preconceived notions of women not wanting to be singled out in the crowd could be quite the opposite…

Like I said, baby steps.

This tourney isn’t really the “ends”…it’s the “means”. It’s the attention getter, to at least communicate the idea that the FG community is now trying to embrace female gamers. Because, if you hang around these threads you definitely don’t get that feeling.

The real progress will come after the tourney, when some of the people who enter the tourney actually stick around. THAT’S the “ends”.

With the exception of women posting here who are in the competitive scene all say it’s a bad idea.

If someone pays me money, I’ll enter as Flowchart Ken. Probably the only time I’ll play SF4 ever other than the first time I picked up the game and was like- What is this crap? throws CD

There’s someone up here who plays M. Bison, but she’s kinda an attention whore. Kept giving me the stink-eye at the last tourney.

On a more serious note- I really do hope that whoever wins it is amazing and crushes the main tourney or was just someone who entered to troll. Otherwise it’ll be a major blemish and I’ll feel bad for them.

On an even more serious note- Someone play the sexist card and get a Host Cafe at Evo with hot Japanese guys.

but that’s if any of them stick around to be serious with it.

If you make a separate tourney for women in a sport, you concede that:

  1. Women are inherently less skilled than men in that sport.
  2. Women can never hope to compete with men in that sport.

That’s a strange way to describe segregation.

Seems like it.

:coffee:

But, it’s not about skill or competing with the men (which they can still do, anyways). That’s not the purpose of the women’s tourney. Why do you assume that the women’s tourney will display a lower level of skill than the overall tourney? Why do you assume the EVO crew believes the women’s tourney will display a lower level of skill?

The real issue is the community, and how female gamers are viewed and respected (or not). It’s a proactive attempt to invite female gamers into a community that really hasn’t been very welcoming to female gamers in the past. What better way is there to make that statement than at the biggest FG tourney?

Except no one is being segregated, because female players are free to enter the overall tourneys like they’ve always been.

Not to say that I don’t see why people (including female gamers) might be opposed…but, what other ways are there to make this statement, and evolve the community?

Well, if you never try you’ll never know ?..

Instead of an all female tournament, why not just hold a 2v2 with a man and woman on each team?
