The reason why my FADC'ing is inconsistent

So I was in training mode and noticed that if I hold down MP + MK to do a focus attack and let go after (an attempt) starting Metsu, a DP comes out.

https://vid.me/6w02 = What I mean

How come a focus attack AND a shoryuken comes out even though I only press MP + MK in between and even dash in between? This is my number one thing holding me back from FADC’ing on command, so basically I’m asking how to prevent this.

Probably negative edge. Specials in SF4 and some other FGs can trigger on button release and normal button press. When they’re triggered by button release it’s referred to as “Negative Edge”. If you hold down a punch button, then do a fireball motion and release the button, he’ll throw a fireball. After your dash my best guess is the system reads those directional inputs as a DP and since you released MP it sees DP motion + special input trigger and gives you a DP. You’re performing a MP shoryu also, so I’m pretty sure that’s what’s happening.

The best way to prevent it would be to not hold down the buttons for as long or to clean up your dash inputs. If you’re trying to FADC then there’s a neat trick that helps with the number of actions you have to do. You can input forward, Focus, forward, and your character will FADC. That should give you a bit more time to let go of the buttons during the dash.

If you’re getting a negative edged DP, then that means your inputs aren’t clean and you’re releasing MP+MK later than you should.

As I always say to players learning this, don’t focus and then dash, but rather focus and dash at the same time. This usually helps with cleaning up the inputs. Just make sure to let go of MP+MK, before you start the motion for Metsu.

I’m more confused as to why you’re inputting (or trying to) U1 after a Focus Dash…

Breaking down the combo into parts most likely.

^This^

Also, I’ll try dashing + focusing at the same time and will see if it helps. Thanks guys.

I was used to Garou:MOTW AB cancel which was easier and more polished overall, even on DP moves (eg Terry).
There you can combine AB cancel with the Power move without issues. You know exactly when the move cancels, from characters blue animation

But in SF4 they made the cancel move too risky and difficult, especially if you want to end it with an Ultra. On a button sensitive arcade stick you’ll need to be very exact, mainly because there are so many interfering inputs and frames. FADC-> Ultra is not so necessary to enjoy the game, but I feel they went too over-the-edge with it. Unnecessarily difficult.

I’m new and terrible. It’s not that difficult.

it seems SF4 is not my thing. Can do AB cancels in Garou and LB2, yet struggle at SF4 FADC…

There’s shortcut FADC motions 4 times easier than the default one (if the special end with a forward, mainly). And in general multiple ways to trigger the move you want in SF4. That’s a great “feature” in my book. Pick the style you like.

I’m pretty terrible with FADCs myself, mind sharing some of the pertinent shortcuts? (primarily those ending in double QCF)

for FADC :
Just hold forward for half a sec after you input the special (in fact it’s more “till your special is active/hit”).
From here all you need to FADC is go back to neutral and forward + MP + MK as fast as you can.

for SRK type moves :
f,d,df = df,f,df = df,d,df = f,d,f = f,df,uf = db,uf,db,uf = …
there’s situation and chars and people that will constantly succeed with some shortcuts that look harder than the default ones. You’ll have to test them.
My best example is doing Zangief st.lk xx green hand after a far MP. I personally use f.LK, df, uf.LP

for QCF x2 ultras :
db,d,df,d,df,f,u is what people use the most that covers the main possible mistakes trying to do it clean (aka : missing the first “d”, doing it too fast and getting a super instead)

for QCF x2 Supers :
Only if you cancel it from a QCF special, just forget the first Super QCF, the one from the special will count for the Super.

for Charge Ultras :
instead of charge db, df, db, uf you can do charge db, df, db, ub ridding the gate on the way back making it easier for some people.

There’s more with jump cancel & super jump cancel moves. Calling it shortcut is kind of misleading it’s more a motion adaptation to your style on a stick/pad.
