I don’t find Hugo too diffcult as Raven, only played agianst him a couple of times offine though.
I mostly zone him out with shuriken and once I’m full screen, do shuriken > teleport mixups if I want to get in. The most important thing is not to jump in on him. I don’t really see how Hugo can get in on a Raven unless you corner yourself.

I was playing against this Rufus/Hugo pair…
Rufus kept cross jumping in and as raven has no air anti air… I feel like I’m sitting there block as much as I can until he gets his cross in combo for hugo, to do the standard punch clap and air throw…
I try to get to rufus in every way… But I just can’t combo or get close… he anti air, prioritizes me and just keeps me under pressured, I tried to dash, shiru… But If I waste too much time and do no damage then he will combo me, do a big chunk of my health and then the time would prob run out then…
I may not be a huge experienced Raven player… But not everyone knows what they’re doing… I 60% know what I’m doing… that 40% my head goes blank and I get zoned out…
See you’re not listening to me. Raven has anti-air, you’re just bad at it. I’m not going to explain it again Jump back shuriken also works to stop Rufus from jumping. Rufus’s divekick is amazing in this game, but you can just keep out of the range that he wants to crossup divekick at. Run away and throw shurikens, then anti-air him when he jumps at half screen.
Don’t feel like you have to take risks against Rufus. You should lame out Rufus when possible. He’s a terrifying character in terms of damage and easy mixups, but your best bet is to play a safer game.
Rufus’s pokes are pretty mediocre. He can’t out prioritize you on the ground. He needs to jump. Be ready for it.
I think Raven-Hugo matchup is like 7-3, hugo can´t do shit against raven shurikens/teleport zoning. Lariats are no problem for him either and beaten by chain combos at mid range or just wind cross/EX shuriken if they are abusing it THAT much. Hugo´s only hope is to guess a jump-in or he will get destroyed.
Rufus on the other hand is more difficult to keep away and while raven has AA it´s difficult to properly time them against rufus and any opening can be deadly, rufus pressure on this game is THAT great and raven has no reliable way to get away of it but the same happens with 80% of the cast. At least raven can keep away rufus to an extent something other characters don´t have the luxury to do.
Your best bet is to play a good keepway game and react with air to air normals when he jumps, also have a good partnet to deal with rufus , I think dealing with rufus/ryu/rolento/hugo and mishimas is key in this game at least right now.
He means AIR TO AIR normals. I find neutral jump medium kick works pretty well, and I feel like a lot of characters’ air normals have large amounts of active frames so it can seem like they beat everything, where they’re really just hitting them as early as possible to catch your jump. To counter this, you just either have to not jump, or do the same thing they’re doing and hit your air to air normal as early as possible.
On the subject of straight anti airs, cr.MP on counter hit can juggle with any Alter Ego, except for the LK+MK EX version, also I find back+mk to be a better anti air than just st.mk, on hit it automatically causes juggle state and depending on height you can do the back+MK ~ MK target combo to finish it (ground bounce!), the back+MK ~ HK target combo, or just sweep or whatever juggle you like. On counter hit if the range is good you can get a cr.HP, but I think the target combo ending in HK or just sweep are probably the best options if not in the corner.
Also let me just say how awesome it is having a horizontal projectile in the air for the Vega matchup lol.
st.LP is pretty good for anti airing Rufus’s dive kick. Since the jab has no hurt box, it beats it out pretty well for those lower height dive kicks. Anything higher and you can just use your standard anti airs.
I played a guy who kept using st.LP,st.LP,b.MK+LK xx crosswind. On block he could easily back dash. Why is this not the best hit confirm? because of damage scaling? I tried it and found it very reliable. Also if a move is -3 on block does that mean a move with 3 frame start up has only one frame to punish?
One more question, when throwing the star at full screen is it possible to teleport behind the opponent? I always end up right in front.
Yeah, if you cancel into the teleport. Just do the LP ninja star, then immediately input the teleport. The teleport will automatically come out on the first possible frame.
I’ve had the same problem with teleports. Even though I use the cross-up one, I randomly end up in front of them. May be because if they are walking backwards, you cant teleport behind them?
I think its because if the y wall backwards you sort of end up teleporting inside them, and as they continue to move back the game pops you back in front of them. similar to the funky hitbox stuff in sfiv.
That is the hit confirm that I use. I just tested it and found out it does 2 damage less than a MK or MP when done with 2 jabs but does more damage if done with only one jab or no jabs. This is my first time coming on the the Raven thread but i thought that this would have been established already as the best hit confirm because along with being able to throw a shuriken on block you also have the abilty to use his overhead or low. If there is a reason to use cr.MK other than its range I’d be interested in learning it. BTW the combo i used to test damage was b.MK+LK / cr.MP xx wind cross LP, cr.HP CADC st.HP xx alter ego
Its not a true blockstring, as there is a 2f gap between a jab on block and b.mk is the main reason people don’t use it IMO, also the range is a little spotty if your not pretty close. So you really have to confirm on the jabs. But if you can do it, I don’t see why not.
I’m not exactly sure how to read frame data but it says that cr.MP and b.MK both start up in 6 frames and cr.MK starts up in 7 frames. Wouldn’t that mean that all the options are pretty much the same on block? Or is the frame data i’m looking at wrong or do i just not know what i’m talking about? lol.
