The Rap Thread: News, Reviews, Rants & Opinions: Volume 9 - Yes, we know "Hip Hop"

to e fair, if you’re part of the newer generation, unless you ‘dig’ your predominant ‘sample size’ of those respect music IS WACK/WEAK/UNDERWELMING. We can argue up and down about how good certain Wu efforts were - when was the last time a Wu effort worthy of their name dropped (not solo)? Cube not only saounds his age, but his attempt at staying relevent is coated wth ‘hanging on to who’s hot’ - like Jay-Z. Even Redman’s last album was ‘meh’…and his last album before that came out when? Most of those artist haven’t dropped ‘worthy’ efforts since like 2000-2001, let alone their good stuff was predominattly in the mid 90s…so again unless you are coached on the older acts, or dig on your own - what you see is ‘meh’.

After I noticed he wasnt feeling old school,I brought up new dudes like Gibbs,Krit,Dom and Saigon. He said their all wack too…then I told him I bet if they were on the radio u would digg them, then goes “yeah i would cuz then they’d be having money”

now that I can’t say shit about…that boy just a fool at that point.

I can’t front whatsoever - this new Asher roth Mixtape is hittin LOVELY in the headphones…I want to see how this cranks in the car. Its not the long synthy bass, but hte drums themselves are just compressed a bit to really shine thru - sorta like Dre…but not as hi-fi if you smell me. Def a worthy mixtape to listen to. Its sorta like the track on The Div with Asher on it, semi-simplistic production with a focus on the artist, but not in a ‘low-budget’ way. Me very very likey.
I finally finished bumping TM103 and did a second run thru…couldn’t do it…just bores me too much. Maybe when I get the system up and going in the other car I’ll like it more, but right now there is nothing stand out about it.

And if your song has ‘Thug’ in it - its automatically wack in 2012’…imjusayin - move on ninjas.

Sadly I get into these debates all the time at my job(alot of downtime lol) at get togethers,Mostly all the younger heads think this way.But i’ve met a few who aren’t ignorant like that.I don’t think my generation has a genuine love for music, most of them that do their own music are only doing it for popularity and money, and the fans of it are also liking so and so artist just to be in the “in crowd”.

Just goes to show no one knows their place anymore really.

I think Common’s ‘Blue Sky’ is my favorite song of the moment. Its truly musical perfection.

I think Dr. Fatality makes the best point about what’s “wrong” with “this generation” of hip-hop heads: they’re not necessarily drawn to creativity or skill, but rather the status they can see. Look like money and people will follow you.

Eh, LMFAO have the #1 single in America right now. Bullshit sells, nowadays.

Also Drake may have the numbers but he’s two albums in and no classics yet, maybe you could make an argument for So far gone.

Playing devil’s advocate here, but LMFAO have unpretentious party rock down. They’re the right combination of funny and accessible, in a genre nobody listens to for lyrics anyway.

From a production standpoint, LMFAO tracks are impressive for their minimalism. They only use what, two instruments on a track? Lead and Bass? Plus an occasional second lead and drums of course, but they keep it very simple, which isn’t as easy as it sounds.

Naw, I’m not really trying to make an argument from a quality stand point, more of a ‘relevance’ stand point. Ludacris’s last album went gold…everything he’s dropped has a plaque with it - so from a relevancy stand point - he’s got enough public backing - new and old to make Drake STFU.

Common doesn’t have the new folks at ALL. Period. He hasn’t had a relevent album since the Chapelle Show. So its doubtful anyone under than the age of 16 associates him with anything but movies…well really one movie. They don’t know his other bit-roles.

And damn I read the ‘plot’ to the new Tyler Perry movie…didn’t he do that already with Antoine & Rudy?

Heard Pusha T got on the remix of stay scheming and dissed drake also.

Young Money Vs. G.O.O.D Music mid 2012?, there’s gonna be leggins, skinny jeans and boot fur flying everywhere if it happens.

Are you seriously asking if a TP movie is recycled??

I love the Av…but in your description of what would fly, you forgot yellow bird feathers and Dragonballs…

  • :bluu:

I guess, but I’m saying that shit was only like one and a half movies ago, he just changed actors.

And ninjas try and diss EA for releasing Madden every year or Capcom for releasing UMvC3 9 months later…Tyler Perry is on par with…
Big Tymers “How You Luv That Vol 1.”…and “Vol 2”*…
Pastor Troy and his first like 4-5 albums…and dammit if he doesn’t put ‘Vice Versa’ on every album like that shit was a trademark symbol…
Land Before Time 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, thru 27, Season 1, Season 2, Christmas special (lest we forget, dinosaurs ruled the earth only 2000 years ago right before Jesus got there), etc…

  • :bluu:

You forgot “Land Before Time: Sing Along Songs”.

Fuck yes.

@the producers in the thread what is the process of making a beat for porno…what zone do I have to get in to make those beats???

Tyler Perry is No Limit in 97-98 status,i only liked 2 of that dudes movies:the family that preys and Madea’s christmas wasn’t too bad…but damn where does dude find these chicks at?Yall seen the chick with the bubble on House of Payne?Or that tall chick in Madea’s Christmas with the Nikki Minaj bob???

House Of Payne=baddest chicks on TV(except ella and that old chick)

How the heck do people know about this? Not saying it’s a lie but that’s a really weird thing to gossip on.

Its not a zone, its an understanding. The music is a backdrop, its ‘filler’ - it bridges the gaps of DVD menus or silence. Drums actually aren’t a big deal, and should be compressed to high hell to not hit hard (distraction)…mostly keyboard work…think elevator music…but uptempo…or Kenny G …and yes I just equated Kenny G to porno music. Samples are a no-no as they raise cost. Its less art more functional.

Oh like when in college you and your boys didn’t pass ‘AOL Disc’ to each other? Backstory - one of my boys (James RIP) use to Beta Test for AOL (How I never knew), and the disc he got were not the mass produced - put a copy in every video game magazine type - they were like CD-Rs, so after a while the ‘back-ups’ and trades of ‘disc’ becmae known as AOL Betas…cause thats what we did on the side hahaha

Preemo said that in a interview, they would meet up on the block and trade porn tapes.

@Unreal,good looks.I almost died laughing when I heard Nas’ One Love sampled in a porno flick. It was a diff beat but they had Nas saying “Shorty don’t care, she a snake too”.I think it was on one of them Black Ice jawns.

I guess. That LMFAO ish is straight up garbaggio to me, but I’ve never taken time out to dissect its musical merit. LMFAO will have zero relevance this time next year, mark my words. I respect Lady Gaga more than them.

On a tangent, people constantly citing album sales is a large part of why the [mainstream]game is so mediocre right now. When you start doing that people are going to naturally start catering their music to as large a demographic as possible diluting it in the process. I know I’m sounding real backpacker-ish right now, but you can’t have it both ways.
