Yeah I heard about Guru’s passing this morning on the radio. I heard it right after hearing about Dorothy Height’s passing also. R.I.P. Guru and Dorothy Height.
Sorta had to co-sign that. The cases I’ve heard with regards to heart attacks, if the person is in the hospital THIS long, then there are other complications and the % of survival is real low.
Guru - Respect.

Truth for real. I didn’t even know Guru had cancer?!?! It seems like Premier tried to keep the doors of communication open to Guru, trying to get Gangstarr back together/work with him but Guru (or someone else) would shut the door and act like a bitch. I never heard of this dude Solar until the recently with Guru’s health.
Does it seem like the old head producers/rapper combos seem to self-destruct and have bad blood? Not only Gangstarr, but Pete Rock/CL Smooth; Eric B and Rakim and now hearing Ginuwine and Timbo. Only people keep it somewhat cool is Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff. :wasted:
That’s why I’m glad Reflection Eternal, Cool Kids, Madvillainy, Blue Scholars, Danger Doom, and Common Market are still putting shit out. I don’t think Jaylib broke up when Dilla was here either.
Did that Dre even drop on Friday?
Thats groups in general. Picturing working with one person for twenty plus years. Its bound to wear on you after a while. Sometimes it bubbles perfectly, but other times it gets lumpy (no pun intended). Look at Wu-Tang.
I think the other aspect is the power of the business relationship. When alot of the groups that you mentioned started up - the power of the DJ and the emcee was finally begining to balance out, but for the most part - the power was the DJ…Eric B chose Rakim as his emcee over Freddie Foxx. But during the 90s and 00s there was a monutmental shift that nearly eliminated the DJ…I’ll call it “damn good emcees”. By the mid to end of the 00s, the “damn good emcees” decided to do other stuff, and the DJs were once again gaining in power and popularity to the point that they ran the music industry. But all that pull back and fourth will deterioriate a relationship. If the DJ wants more shine, he starts rapping - the emcee may not like that or might not like the direction - or want to give up the time (see reflection Eternal). The emcee however realizes that he spends WAY too much fucking money trying to BUY a DJ and/or beat maker, and is better off with the more cohesive sound he had with his DJ (see Reflection Eternal).
Will Smith and Jazzy are IMO both irrelevant in the scheme of things, and they know and fully understand their position in music…tus creating a comfort level that other acts don’t have. Will Smith isn’t about making money off music, he does that shit for fun. He knows he isn’t throwing down with…Ras Kass, so he stays in his lane. Jazzy is a DJ in the purist form, and thats his craft, so he stays in his lane…neither side is reaching in the other’s
But think about Wu Tang & 3-6 Mafia…you could argue that its the Producers/DJs who tore the groups apart. Rza wanted the music to go a certain way and some of the artist didn’t agree. 3-6 MAfia it was more financially driven, but there were musical facets as well. Even - say Destiny’s Child, they can play nice as much as they want, ultimatly it came down to a power struggle.
Hell I can look at my group - SOH. Alex was to take care of production, I was to take care of the business, but compromising was difficult and neither side really could feel the other side…there was respect, but I got frustrated with him keeping the best beats for himself and takin so long, that I started making beats myself, and I got frustrated with him not buying into the efforts outside of music. Now I think we both perfectly understand each other, but distance and time are the limiting factors for an SOH album.

its always cause one exceeds the other… an in some cases one gets mad at the other… sad but very true from almost every duo. or u get the ‘creative’ difference excuse which boggles my mind cause how the fucc yall make the previous classic (s)??
Wow I just read about GURU and came in here…fuck man rip guru.
Seems like the problems are always the Dj / producer though…How could I forget Little Brother…Seems like you would want to do it for the fans rather than what ever is going through their minds…(bitches, hoes, and clothes???)
dude the statement from Solar and Guru last letter to fans… homo
I really think that ish is fake. He would diss Premo like that on his deathbed and not talk about all positives. Solar is a fraud I haven’t heard of until 2 months ago
Nothing about that letter sounds legitimate.
no one believes it and dont be surprised if solar gets jumped.
