The RAGE Pad by The Ace Theorist - Hand-crafted DIY arcade fight stick case. Updated 4/17

I understand what you guys mean about the layout. I actually started with a vewlix layout and began to adjust it from there to the iteration you see in the pics. I tweaked the angle and the rise to get a more comfortable positioning with the shape of the pad, specifically the palm rest. I also pulled the joystick away from the button array because I prefer more room between them. The result you see, is a perfect balance for the size and shape of The RAGE Pad that fits me personally. I’m open to the idea of offering existing layouts for the button array because I know everyone has preference. I build these by hand so I can create top plates of existing layouts and have options to choose from. I immensely appreciate the feedback that I have received and I want you all to feel just how great these pads are in hand, so I’m all for raising them up to the highest bars necessary. I will layout the noir and a few other arrays today and see how they fit in relation to the body frame. I’m confident that I can make most arrays work and be balanced.

Personally, I think the layout is completely fine. One thing that is not fine though is the USB passthru/extension on the orange and black stick:

The internal length of that passthru cable is WAY too long.

Even with ferrite cores, USB has approximately 15ft before you start running into significant signal interference. Keeping internal USB runs within the stick as short as possible is important to allow customers (with significant distances between them and their components) to avoid having to resort to active usb extension cables.

Other than that, these things rock! I hope they sell well. Best of luck to you!

@jopamo

Ha! That cable is literally just for charging and is my personal PS3 pad. The PCB inside is actually a PS3 SixAxis controller so it’s always wireless. The reason I routed that cable like that instead of neutrik passthrough is because I had already notched the case for a cable passthrough when I had tested Retro-Bit’s Sega Genesis/USB Ryu controller (11 pins) and it was my only miniUSB cable on hand Ha! Thanks for the input!

Oh ok, good. Thinking that as a signal cable made me cringe.

something I’d like to ask:

Is the mounting hardware for this Universal (i.e. can accept Korean sticks like the Myoungshin/Taeyoung Fanta alongside standard JLF mounting holes without modification); or do you have the option to select mounting options when you place the order for it? If you have a universal mounting option for K-sticks; I’d love something like this as a travel stick instead of carrying my Obsidian around in my backpack. If not, can I suggest a universal mounting option in the next revision?

The maximum depth for any joystick to fit in this case is 1.5" including the mounting plate. If you have the dimensions of the mounting plate for your joystick, I can easily see if it fits the existing mounts or even just drill custom ones for your joystick. The existing mounts fit sanwa’s JLF, Seimitsu, and a variety of other joysticks that utilize the same corner plate mounts.

let me get the dimensions for both a Myoungshin and a Taeyoung for you and I’ll add them to another post here in a few.

@DAyala

Here’s the goods… The “Standard Japanese Arcade Design” layout will work. I also searched for the exacting Namco Noir layout and could not find it, however, I can make that layout work too! The main reason that both of those layouts fit The RAGE Pad is because of the distance between the joystick and button array (95mm). I can recreate a 6-button “Standard Japanese Arcade Design” layout spot on per the dimensions that SlagCoin hooks us up with and I can also recreate a close “Namco Noir” layout by eye. If you have a stick with the Namco Noir layout on it, I could get a few measurements from you and whip it up :wink: Then, those will be options moving forward.

@mikeohara

I can make either of the Korean joysticks you listed work in The RAGE Pad with exacting mount holes (different from JLF/Seimitsu). I found exact plate dimensions. Also, the joystick shaft opening will obviously be larger than JLF opening. Thanks for asking about them! I will update the Intro post.

Very sharp design, I really like the integrated handle. I’ll probably be sending you some questions about a case or two this Friday when I am off work.

@J-ride

Thank you.

This is such a nice original design with a lot of thought clearly gone in, you should be proud and I hope it does well.

Waiting for someone to customise one with art similar to this:

Also I think a 2 player twin stick setup of one of these would be amazing!

That is great! Yeah I could have sworn Namco Noir was a little more apart but after looking at my dimensions on my case it looks exactly like the Standard Japanese Arcade Layout on Slagcoin. This is the stick that has the one I was looking at, dont think its any different. Im in the process of moving but soon as I settle ill get a hold of you since I want it to be my kids bday present, thanks!

@bashirkashmiri

Haha! YES!!

Alright, SRK…

You voiced your opinions and thoughts and here’s what’s new…

With a minor revision of the body dimensions, I am now able to offer 4 different layouts for you to choose from.

The original design “Rising Fury” allows greater spacing between the joystick and buttons as well as a golden curved rising button array. This layout offers a nice width and the largest palm resting area of the different options. In my opinion, this button array suits a more “emotionally outburstful” type of gameplay where the arm, hand, and fingers can swing more freely.

The next layout is the “Japanese Arcade” 6-button standard configuration. The buttons are closely fit and form equilateral triangles and a square. This layout is excellently balanced with The RAGE Pad and features a nice palm resting area. In my opinion, this array suits a crafted, controlled player with tight spacing for quick response.

Up next is the “Namco Noir” layout which seems to be derived from the Sega arcade cabinet layouts with some nuances. The joystick placement is widened to 95mm and the buttons feature slightly more space between them. I think that the 6 button array fits nicely with The RAGE Pad although there is less palm space than with the other layouts featured. In my opinion, this array offers a comfortable spacing with refined curvature that fits players with a uniquely tuned style.

And finally, for all you 8-button fanatics out there, I was able to fit the “Namco Noir” 8-button layout onto The RAGE Pad. In my opinion, I feel that this layout creates a slight imbalance with The RAGE Pad’s sizing, but now there’s an option if 8 buttons are a must.

In addition to the enhanced panel layout options, I now can also offer the choice between JLF/Seimitsu standard joystick mounting and Myoungshin/Taeyoung Korean joystick mounting.

I will update the main post with all of this information. Thanks to all of you for the input that has risen the game of The RAGE Pad!!

Nice job man. Yeah I agree that the 8 button layout is too much for that board, but still good to have the option available.

Want to see what other models are you planing to do.

Nice. Way to listen to the community! Is the “Japanese Arcade” layout a Taito Vewlix layout? Or a Sega Astro City 2-player layout? It looks like Sega 2P to me.

It does look like Astro P2 to me as well.

But awesome job in taking in the feedback, it’s great to see you give upcoming customers options to get exactly what they want! :slight_smile:

Great that you’re offering different button layouts especially Namco noir

This!! would be dope…or even a larger case like a HSS-0130 or vlx size stick would be great for a 1p configuration if you ever want to do a more premium model.

I just placed an order for 2 cases from you through your store, I was just wondering where you got the silver buttons in this image:
Also where do you purchase the USB connector and bracket.
