The Queen of MAHVELL 3!: The Morrigan GD Thread

New various tech I’ve been working on:

8, 4B+C, C xx 236A xx 214S, 2B+C, C is a really cool footsies tool, I normally super jump instead of regular jump because it seems easier to do it at the correct height, but with normal jump you have access to assists. If you do this pre-emptively you can punish a lot of dash crouch lights and the lot, it puts durability in front of you so for the most part the worst thing that will happen is trade, you can combo on hit, and on block you have your assist available to push them back out or lock them down for mix ups.

2B xx 623B xx 214S is really good, it low profiles a ton of stuff, and that Shadowblade is terrifying especially if you get real confirms off of it.

2B, delay xx 214S, 214S, 63214A is pretty terrifying to deal with. Since it’s a low and if they advance guard they get command thrown. Can be done off an air dash down A if you time it well, it’s a good way to deal with people who are scared of your high low up close and mash advancing guard.

When people run at the top corner against Morrigan Dante you can use Jam session to pin them and make them eat 6 chipping soul fists and position yourself in a way to react to and body everything they may do.

Additionally, getting at the right spot then flying and summoning Jam Session you can plink dash back and forth under someone to make it super ambiguous, unfly immediately on hit, then super jump back up and confirm with C xx 236B whatever lowering combo you want.

Oh. I thought you meant mashing Dante’s missiles + Soul Fist assist. Should have realized you meant Doom’s.

The more I go back to my old team of Morri/Doom/Jean the more I like it. I honestly think it’ll be pretty damn beastly if I ever get down Doom TACs and Chrisis’ infinite. Dark Phoenix with Harmonizer and Missiles is just too fun. Harmonizer is just so good at getting you past that rough spot right after Dark Phoenix Rises without popping X-factor. I just wish I could realistically abuse TK Overdrive assist a bit more too.

I think thats a good team too. Morrigan really comes into her own as a battery when you know how to use soul drains in the neutral games and in combos along with her rushdown tools.

I still think it’s silly how fast blocked plasma beam with harmonizer builds meter though.

One of the reasons I really want to get better at solo AV activation combos is so I can end them with a Missile OTG into a double soul drain. It’d be a huge damage improvement, for combos that would still end up a bit meter positive. I’ve never managed to get a double drain off HM yet even though I see lot’s of people state it;s possible, but in this case you’d be able to end with a quad drain.

I just finally hit Doom’s MM adf MM etc until flight ends TAC for the first time. There needs to be a less tedious way to practice TACs.

Just wanted to agree with this considering I use it in my Vergil Chip based team just in assist form. Even in assist form the chip damage, and meter build is great from a blocked plasma beam(plus adding RT to the mix for even better gains). So I can totally believe, and agree with how much chip and meter Doom can build with Harmonizer behind him.

Hell, if I had the balls to run a point doom with Morri second I probably would. Only problem I have with doom point is that…it’s doom, lol. Granted, seeing as Dante seems to fix some of he’s quirks, I might give Doom/Morri/Dante a shot. Considering it’s pretty much the same composition as Morri/Doom/Dante it should be worth the time to learn.

But doesn’t that sacrifice the ability to use the trap just to power Jean?

Only for a time. It’s not an XF3 Dark Phoenix goal team, but a get 5 bars, tag Jean in, and play her till you win or she dies team, with the standard Morri/Doom as fall back. I also just spend meter if it’s prudent, but Jean, dark or not, is by far my vest character. If things go badly, or you actually spend meter, if you have 2.3-3, there’s damn good odds she’s going to bring herself up to 5 anyway, and Jean with 1 bar for healing field and XF3 really isn’t notably worse than any other XF3 character outside of her Strider, Strange, Hawkeye, and Vergil match ups. those bad matches are why I also want to learn Magneto to run Mag/Morri/Doom, I’m just having a hell of a time getting anything down with him.

Guys, I’ve been working on a secondary team with Vjoe, Hawkeye and Morrigan (I know, this team will probably not work, but those are the characters I’m focusing right now), so I wanted to ask you wich players should I look after to learn something about Morrigan.

I have watched a few matches of Arnold Desu and I really liked his Morrigan, but I don’t know any other player besides him.

I really need to train this secondary team, because I’m going to join a tournament who will take the winner to EVO, so I need to focus on that right now.

My recommendations off the top of my head would be OmniSScythe when he still played, JJJ, Chris G (obviously), and Jeo from Japan. All very good players with differences to their styles.

Yeah, I would kill for a way to do something big between Morrigan and Phoenix that’s meter neutral. Once, out of 50 tries, I got double AVed Soul Drain to land after a Phoenix Rage. Gah! It’s so screen-sensitive. If only one of Phoenix’s moves let Morrigan combo into AV -> Soul Drain outside of corners or something. I feel like there should be something between those two, but I just can’t figure it out.

I’ve been running Dormammu/Morrigan/Phoenix lately, and playing a strong runaway game with Dormammu while building meter. TK Overdrive is a decent assist for Dormammu - roughly on par with Akuma’s tatsu assist, so it has some good setups. Once I get 5 bars, I can safely Purification x Stalking Flare, call Dark Harmonizer, charge 1D2C, call Dark Harmonizer, release 1D2C, call Dark Harmonizer, and I’m meter neutral while doing very respectable chip damage.

The only unfortunate point is that if Dormammu dies, Morrigan has nothing really going for her, and her style of play lends to turtling, which means I’m making myself more vulnerable to getting timed out if I just have Phoenix left with 5 bars. I might just start tagging Phoenix in if I have 5 bars left, since XF2 is usually enough to burn through a team. It’s an awkward team, but I enjoy playing all of the characters.

Seconding this list of players, especially since they all have very different playstyles.

just took a look at the morr/storm/felicia player, does seem pretty cool stuff even without a neutral assist.

Alioune vs Champ. Only watched the first few matches but theres probably some interesting tidbits in there.

One thing I noticed alioune did was do 3 soul drains in the air then 1 H soul fist for a total of four air soul fists. You have to do two Soul drains, flight cancel the 2nd soul drain then do 1 more soul drain in flight and you get just enough time to do a final regular soul fist of any strength. Looked good for stalling time in the air similar to doom air photon shot.

Damn, this is the first time I’ve seen Alioune play in awhile, I enjoy what I see. Will have to learn from a lot of that. ^.^

Hey guys trying to pick up this game and want to play Morrigan. So far i’m having trouble flight canceling soul fist. sometimes i throw one out on the ground and the animation looks like its going to come out but i end up in flight or when i do and try to throw one out after i get in flight the H button ends up coming out. Is there a specific timing to this and what are some other things i should be learning. The team and trying to use is morrigan/doom/vergil.

So I just spent 45 minutes in training mode doing nothing but S, jH xx Soul Fist M xx Fly, and I still only hit the damn flight ~65% of the time. My fine dexterity is fucking pathetic.

If the soul fist animation starts, but no soul fist comes out, you canceled into fly too fast. If you get a j.H instead of a soul fist in flight mode, you’re missing an input. Turn on input display, find the problem and try to correct it.

Seems like you’re doing the inputs too fast. You’re cancelling into flight too fast, and then for the second soul fist you’re hitting H too fast,. or you’re incorrectly inputting the motion. Other stuff to learn is how to rush with her. Flooding the screen will only get you so far; learning to properly defend yourself and knowing when you’re in range to start an offense are more important! Get used to her movement too, she spends 95% of the time in the air. All of her air moves have different uses; L has good range for an L and is very quick, M has good range, H covers her whole body and can cross-up, and S hits multiple times. Try playing Vergil/Doom/Morrigan or Vergil/Morrigan/Doom as well. I think Vergil on point would be the most effective order, but I’d ask the Vergil forums for advice on that.

I need to learn how to do something other than a.MMH Shadow Blade in the air. My basic combo is LMH f.H a.LMH s.S MMH Shadow Blade or SF. I’d like to learn how to best take advantage of her flying air dashes and how to extend combos with fly.

Well, the way to extend combos with fly is to cancel a SF with fly. Try this: LMH f.H j.MMH Soul Fist L xx Fly xx ADF HS (land) S MMH Shadowblade M xx Fly xx S. There are more combos you can look at in the combo thread.

Can’t I get a fly SF unfly a.S before the forward H under that logic too?
Actually, about how much hitstun does a SF have? Having a good feel for the amount of hitstun should help my combo making greatly.
