JJJ’s Morrigan
Starts at 23:40
I like Finishing Shower solely because it can be very useful for bullying Phoenix. Nearly every Phoenix player unfamiliar with the match-up will try to teleport behind the move but end up teleporting straight into the missiles in the process. Free combo afterward too.
Somebody give me a reason not to replace Morrigan with Trish on my team.
I’m actually quite earnest about this, since Morrigan is the only character on my current team (Hulk/Dorm/Morrigan) that I’ve been using the beginning, and she’s incredibly fun, and X-Factor Astral Vision shenanigans are so satisfying to pull on people, and I love her for it, but she just has way too many limitations and her damage/comeback potential without X-Factor or Level 3 is frankly quite SHIT and barely adequate even with them.
It’s actually insulting to have to do shit like Jump Canceling, Fly/Unfly, and multiple links ALL in one simple combo and STILL barely crack 400-500k with 1 meter, in a game where Wolverine can kill you off of one random divekick.
how bout instead of dropping her, just change the team order. put her on point or second. dorm is a far better anchor in my opinion.
The only things Morrigan has over Trish is a better level 3, Shadow Servant bullshit, and the fastest overhead in the game that you can combo off oh without an assist. Trish would be better for that team imo. Damage out xaps close to Morri still solo, but she benefits from assists, and is generally easier to use.
So my main problem is that she has no damage potential without X-Factor and meter, and your solution is to put her in a position where she has LESS access to meter, X-factor, and her meter-building assist???
Yeah, pretty much what I expected. But I really don’t want to learn a new character, and Morrigan is so much more fun…
well, in a nutshell yea. if u think about it morrigan can be played both ways zone and rush. by the looks of your team, so can u. bnb to finishing shower dhc’d into gamma crush will do tons of damage.
IMO hulk and dorm are far more scary with xfactor. the meter problem though…hmmm. If hulk is on point and u land a air combo u can air tag down for 1 bar. granted it’s not teched.
Morrigan was my anchor for a point, then I realized she has very limited options against dark phoenix. so I replaced her with doom.
Morrigan has more options against Dark Phoenix than most characters in Shadow Servant by itself.
Morrigan is actually one of the better characters against Dark Phoenix, IMO, which is one of the reasons why I had been keeping her, and one of the few major advantages I think she has over Trish.
I started researching this character recently, and she’s pretty interesting. I’m liking her versatility, especially with zoning and mix-up capabilities. Here are some attack strings I came up with so far.
Ground strings:
[]s.L-c.M-s.H, f+M xx Flight
[]s.L-c.M-s.H xx Shadow Blade M xx Flight
[]s.L-c.M-s.H-c.H-f+H > jump, Air Soul Fist L xx Flight
Flight mix-ups:
[]airdash down, j.L-M-H-S, c.M
[]airdash down, unfly, s.L
[]airdash down, unfly, Vector Drain [xx Flight, airthrow]
Does she have any other good ways to initiate mix-ups? Should I modify or scrap any of these?
Morrigan has a “hunter” series, so there’s little to no point in not doing M, cM together in combos unless you start them on cM. sH is only useful for damage in x-factor, although it’s always good for meter. My preferred ground string when I’m not being particularly meter conscious is cM, f+M, S. If I am being meter conscious, it’s M, cM, cH, f+H, jc jM, jH, jS, L, M cH, S. For an air string to finish combos, jM, jH, M Shadow Blade, flight, jM, jH, M Shadow Blade xx Finishing Shower. Ground Strings are all started with L, cM, tri-dash H, or flight+S.
Highest single meter damage outside of soul fist flight loops in the corner is that I’ve seen or found is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q0ukautrWA.
Focusing on mixups, jH is good for cross ups, which gives her some left/right ability, and Flight xx S is one of, if not the fastest ground based overhead in the game. Between sL, cM, jH, and jS it’s usually pretty easy to get a hit if you’re rushing. Vector Drain H is obviously a nice go to on defense since it’s 1 frame, although as you know follow ups are dependent on meter and Morrigan’s spacing to the corner.
You will almost always have to play a mix of both keep away and rush with Morrigan. Whittle them down with Astral Vision assisted Soul Fists, then move in to finish them when you’re certain you can do it in no more than 2 touches. Combo damage is just going to be meh outside of Darkness Illusion and x-factor no matter what you do really.
Oh, and if you’re absolutely desperate for meter, I find Morrigan is usually capable of landing LLMMH as an air combo after pretty much any launch. Damage is ass, but meter gain is solid.
More damage is always a plus, but still doesnt seem explicitly necessary to me if you have your team set up right.
I like the angled ground dash. Im mean, having a run and an angled dash just opens up more options, and more options is never a bad thing, but if i had to only pick one id pick the angled dash. it sets up for some tricky situations off stuff like throws. and if you hold it long enough, you reach the height where you can air dash off it if you fly cancel it.
I agree fully on the AV, Lilith, and soul eraser points. Its so aggrivating having the one powerup super that can get punished by random beams.
Being able to combo off of throws anytime would be great too.
I still feel like morrigan is a really good character that can still do enough as she is with the tons of options that she has, just her supers need to get toned up a bit.
really the only things that I think she needs is:
A faster, longer lasting AV
Soul Eraser
A bit more damage on Darkness Illusion and Finishing Shower.
Consistent combos off throws.
The non standard ground dash is one of the reasons why Morrigan can’t do much off an air throw. Finishing Shower doing more damage would just exacerbate the current problem, that being the fewer hits before using it the better. It only does like 4k less raw than Million Dollars, and does more damage as a combo finisher since Morrigan has higher minimum hyper damage than Dante. The best thing they could do for finishing shower would be to tighten up the missile spread, so landing every missiles on someone smaller than Hulk in mid air would be consistent.
I strongly agree with the “Morrigan wishlists” but I would like to add these less important suggestions:
[]Remove that glowing aura while Morrigan is landing a Darkness Illusion. I can hardly see what she is doing. LOL.
[]Her Shadow Blade assist should have some invincibility and perhaps should not be the H version. I think the L or M versions would be better. Her Dark Harmonizer assist is fine and not sure if you can improve her Soul Fist assist aside from letting Astral Vision persist when she tags out.
[]Her aerial S should not be Shell Kick. I prefer Shell Kick to be a command move (like in MVC2, QCB + K and multi-hits) that chips when blocked, this should make her slightly more scary when rushing down. Making her aerial S a single hit move helps with damage scaling into OTG Shadow Servant.
[]Decrease pushback on f+M so I can launch more consistently after hitting with it.

Increase pushback on a blocked Shadow Servant.
That’s all I can come up with at the moment.
I was going to also wish for a Dark Harmonizer on point for Morrigan (because she is such a meter maid), not sure if that would be beneficial since your opponent would most likely be in your face.
In MVC1 and MVC2, Morrigan had Lilith with her as well as Soul Eraser, a grounded ground dash and a 1 meter Darkness Illusion. In MVC3, Morrigan is without Lilith and hence does not have either of these. She is closer to her Vampire incarnation than the known MVC incarnation. The absence of Soul Eraser makes her less of a “shoto-clone”, I do like the Vampire incarnation of Morrigan in MVC3 though.
Invincible L Shadow Blade assist would be amazing. Dark Harmonizer on point would be an amazing replacement for her taunt. MvC3 Morrigan is almost a direct port of TvC Morrigan an amazing flight mode from what I’ve seen, and TVC still included the Lilith models for Darkness Illusion and Shadow Servant.
Thanks for the answers. I don’t really plan to make Morrigan build her own meter if I can help it. She has a good meter-building assist, so it makes sense to me to put her in second position and build meter with someone else on point (probably Storm). Is there another way to end her air combos (with or without an assist) to get better okizeme afterwards? That’s the one thing besides damage that she really seems to be lacking.
Best bet I think is trying to see if She has some dash set ups off Double Typhoon. It’s delayed, and should pop them right into her dash arc.
Speaking of damage, I’m going to see if a potential loop I thought up after checking which of her moves cause knockdowns works out. I’ve seen some very similar loops, but this one(if it works) should be quite a bit like Zero’s raikousen loops, since all of the attacks involved would cause soft knockdowns, and ignore hit stun decay. Basically, I’m going to see if I can get some variation of (combo starter) [cH-f+H, M Shadow Blade xx fly, air dash down jS]xN to work. I’m hoping the canceling the down air dash into jS will whiff and get me to the ground fast enough to juggle off cH again, or f+H at worst. Since cH, f+H, and Shadow Blade are all knockdowns, this should allow for corner carry and solid damage, without worrying all that much about hit stun decay. Just no idea if it’s going to actually work or not yet.
Edit: Experiment failure.
What do you guys usually follow up with after DHC trick into AV?
How do you get in with morrigan besides using assist?
Throw a fireball, fly cancel it and dash after it. 2 if you really feel the need to be safe. She has an effective tri-dash if you cancel her down air dash into an attack early enough. Also, given that Morri is one of the characters that can actually effectively zone, you can usually just wait for them to come to you.
